JAPAN: Elderly motorists asked to give up driving...

They are the greatest peril on Japanese roads, notoriously careless and accident-prone. Now the authorities and the business community are joining forces in an effort to get overage drivers off the road in a campaign that tries make the roads safer by persuading senior citizens to get rid of their cars. 
In grid-locked Tokyo, where old drivers are in abundance, local businesses will be offering benefits and cash incentives to elderly people who are prepared to hand in their drivers’ licences. The project is backed by police, who have pledged to cut back on the ballooning number of traffic accidents caused by drivers over 65. 
Among more than 30 special offers targeting grey drivers, one small bank will pay higher interest rates on savings, while Mitsukoshi department store chain plans to provide free delivery from its Tokyo stores, Meanwhile a hotel plans to offer a ten per cent discount on meals in a programme starting next month, Tokyo police said on their Web site. 
“Have the courage to give up your licence,” the police say on the site. “If you have lost confidence in your driving . . . if your family says they are worried about you driving . . . please think about handing in your licence.” 
 
Japan has the largest proportion of over65s in the world and faces a growing problem with elderly drivers, who caused 100,000 traffic accidents last year.

yup they are worse then kids fresh with their license..

i think the us needs to adopt this. except i think they should be tested first to see how poor their driving really is.
