welded 3 piece wheels?

I took my tires off and started fixing the curb rash on my lips, I was thinking of taking apart the wheel so I can get the centers painted because there are a few chips. I scraped off some of the silicone to see if I can take the wheel apart, but it seems to be tig welded all the way around. is there anyway to take the wheel apart, or would it just be better to just take off the rivets, then mask off the lip and have the centers painted? Also, after I get my lips polished, is it a good I dea to have them clearcoated while having the centers painted?

The wheels are SSR Vienna's.

you probably have a 2 piece wheel since the barrel and lip are welded. you may be able to take the face off by taking off all the bolts on the back.

Mine are a 2 piece weld and I was told I couldn't take the face off... :shrug:

NO you cant take the face off when the wheel is welded. If you do you will loose the integrity of the wheel..
 
My wheels are an actual 3 piece and I can remove the centers BUT,,,,,,, in order to get them back to manfucatures specs I would have to find out the torque settings...I was going to have them refinished but have not had the time to...:shrug:

damn. that sucks. I hope I can take the face off. if not, I'll just mask off the lips, thanks

Some Vienna are only 2-piece.

It *looks* like the face is actually bolted in though, unlike the Euroline DH.

My Garson barrel/lip are welded together. I had the lips masked and unbolted it to have them refinished but I had a wheel shop do it all so they can torque it back to the same spec. But if your spokes dont sit on top and the are sandwiched between the barrels then you are pretty much screwed.

lol, that is exactly the way it is. I was looking at them today, and the face is between the barrel and the lip, so even if I take the rivets out, the face is still stuck there. o'well. I'll just hve to mask off the lips carefully before painting them.

You should be able to take the wheel apart on SSR Viennas. I have never seen SSR use a welded barrel on the Vienna Line but even if they were the face should be removable. We have done a few of them already, but if you rather mask the face off it is fine. You just won't get the whole lip polished down all the way to the crevasse cause the face will be in the way.

everyone keeps telling me that, but for some reason my set of wheels are welded =(. I dont have the set of vienna's that everyone else has, i have these ones;

Anybody know of anyshops that can do this. I heard its possible to cut at the weld. I read somewhere, I forgot where, that somebody did this to his 3 piece ssr's that had been welded together, then got new lips from some company called image wheels birminhgam. anybody heard of this, or know of any shops that can have this done?

I know of a shop in So Cal that could do it, but if it requires cutting and welding, as someone mentioned it alters the integrity of the wheel. I was thinking about doing that with my 2 piece welded wheels but didn't want to affect the original strength and what not. I was going to repolish the barrels and then have them dipped in copper (or whatever the process is to make them copper).

they can be cut and wleded back together but i think you'll be ok just buying 3 piece lips and barrels. it's not like companies design a different face for welded/non-welded apps. a lot of wheels are available in both configurations.

do you know if SSR will sell new lips and barrel seperatly? The wheels I have been discountinued for a long time.

ssr probably won't but custom lips and barrels are pretty easy to get now days. not like a couple years ago.

Do you know of a company I can get some from?

I know most of the time Platinum VIP/VIP Modular wheels can do it.  There's also a guy in socal who does it.  he's really well known among honda guys and can do some crazy stuff; like making a step plate to use a 15" (OG Mugen) center with 17" barrels.  not cheap though, and his name escapes me at this moment.

tunershop.com also sells custom lips, as well as most of the u.s. forged wheel companies (mc3 wheels advertises this service on cl, but they all have access to lip providers).
