TSA Forces Woman To Remove Nipple Rings

[B]LOS ANGELES (CBS) ― A woman was forced by the Transportation Security Administration to remove her nipple rings before she was allowed to board a flight, a local attorney said on Thursday.[/B]
 
[B]"The woman was given a pair of pliers in order to remove the rings in her nipples,"[/B] said Los Angeles attorney Gloria Allred. "The rings had been in her nipples for many years."
Allred and the woman planned to hold an early-afternoon news conference in Los Angeles to explain what they plan to do "to ensure that no other person is forced to suffer" the same fate, the attorney said in a statement.
 
The Transportation Security Administration does not have a specific policy addressing nipple rings or any other jewelry, said TSA spokesman Dwayne Baird. Baird said he did not know of the incident Allred mentioned in her statement.
 
"I'd be really curious to know what this woman had in her nipples," Baird said. "Sometimes they have a chain between their nipples, or a chain between their nipples and their belly button. It would have to be made of heavy metal to be detected."
 
Transportation Security employees are required to check anything that raises concerns at checkpoints, Baird said.
 
"No matter what it is, if it's something that unduly alarms people or sets off the sensors they must check it," Baird said.
 
 "But I've never heard of any of our people having anyone remove something that sounds as small as a nipple ring."
 
Allred said that several years ago, celebrity Nicole Richie had her breasts inspected by security at an airport because of her nipple rings. Baird said he was not aware of the Richie incident either.

my friend works as a TSA .... everytime i go threw any metal detecor whether at air port or at court they always make me take peircings out ... i dont feel bad for her at all

Mandi Hamlin, 37, had demanded an apology and her Los Angeles-based attorney sent a letter to the TSA this week requesting a civil rights investigation.

Hamlin said she was trying to board a flight from Lubbock to Dallas on Feb. 24 when she was scanned by a TSA agent after passing through a larger metal detector without problems.

The female TSA agent used a handheld detector that beeped when it passed in front of Hamlin's chest, the Dallas-area resident said.

Hamlin said she told the woman she was wearing nipple piercings. The agent then called over her male colleagues, one of whom said she would have to remove the jewelry, Hamlin said.

Hamlin said she could not remove them and asked whether she could instead display her pierced breasts in private to the female agent. But several other male officers told her she could not board her flight until the jewelry was out, she said.

Hamlin was taken behind a curtain and managed to remove one bar-shaped piercing but had trouble with the second, a ring. She said the officer gave her pliers to remove the ring, a process which caused a lot of physical pain.

The TSA said in a statement on its Web site that the officers properly followed procedures, but that the procedures must change. In the future passengers can either allow a visual inspection of their piercings, or remove them, the agency said.

The statement stopped short of apologizing to Hamlin.

"TSA acknowledges that our procedures caused difficulty for the 
passenger involved and regrets the situation in which she found herself," the agency said in a statement. "We appreciate her raising awareness on this issue and we are changing the procedures to ensure that this does not happen again."

An after-hours call to Hamlin's attorney, Gloria Allred, was not immediately returned.

When ever I go to the airport and walk through the metal detector, I get nervous thinking it'll go off cuz of my nipple rings but it never does.  Never did in honolulu, vegas, san fran. Never went off in japan, china, of philippines. And I've have the hand held ones waved over my chest, nothing. Maybe my rings are made from a different material...

Don't really know what you could do with a nipple ring, let alone an ear ring that you cant do with a pen, or a plastic fork/knife.

What do you do if you have a metal plate in your head, or screws holding you ankle together. Lol

You get a card from the doctor, stating where the screws are, and IIRC there was an Xray picture of my plate and screws in my leg.
