DUBAI (AFP) - One of the world's largest shopping malls is due to open toward the end of the year in the booming Gulf retail paradise of Dubai, developers announced on Tuesday. 
 
Dubai Mall -- [B]covering an area of 12 million square feet[/B] (1.1 million square metres) -- will feature 1,200 stores, an indoor aquarium and an Olympic-sized ice rink, the emirate's real estate developer Emaar said in a statement.
 
The development will dwarf the Mall of the Emirates, currently Dubai's largest retail centre that itself boasts an indoor ski slope and a luxury hotel.
Dubai Mall will become "the region's premier shopping and entertainment destination for residents and a major attraction for Dubai's tourists", predicted Jim Badour, head of Emaar's shopping malls division.
 
The mall will be part of a wider multi-billion-dollar development that includes the world's tallest tower.
 
Burj Dubai is still under construction, but it overtook Taiwan's Taipei 101 tower as the world's tallest building when it reached 512 metres (1,533 feet) in June 2007. Its eventual height remains a closely-guarded secret.
 
Dubai, a member of the oil-rich United Arab Emirates federation, holds a hugely popular annual shopping festival. The city state attracts millions of visitors each year, positioning itself as a global leisure and financial hub.

I wouldn't visit the country b/c of their strict security.

Dubai is a crazy place man. Sheikhs with more money than they can shake their willies at get some 4x4 and boost it to 500hp or more for some dune action! LOL

if only we controlled the worlds oil supply....

I wish!!! if you think about it it wouldn't be in the best interest of anyone involved, except the consumer, for oil prices to drop..... I wish we would tap into the Alaskan reserve then there would be an upset of the oil market price!!! :shrug:

Been there. Seems to be a tourist spot for Europeans. They do some crazy re-claimed land projects. They re-claimed land  in the formation of a palm tree and a model of the world from an outter space view. 

I don't know if it's the same mall that DriftGirl is talking about but they have an indoor snow mountain. I guess that's what you call it. You can snow board or ski in the mall. That's some crazy ish.

not really.... if that was true we would't have soaring gas prices and our dependence on foreign oil would be diminishing since we would have claimed more oil..... it's more about the U.S. doing what it does best... liberating poeple that we eventually have turn against us after we supply them with proper training and weapons hahahahahaha let's check the list:
1. Afghanistan
2. Iran
3. Cuba
4. Pakistan
5. Egypt
6. Libya
