GARMIN gps c550
I just got a Garmin StreetPilot c550 navigation unit. I just got it this morning and now it won't work. I figured it was out of charge, since it was new and i was testing it out with low battery power anyway, so i brought it into the house to charge it using the USB - won't light up. It lit up early but not now. So then i went to the car, turned the ignition, plugged it in and now it won't light up using the cigarette lighter. What is the problem?? Yes, I know I can return it but i bought it online and they said that id' have to send it to GARMIN and have them deal with it.
I googled the problem and it seems like its a common thing. One guy said it could be a bad USB cord. If this is the case, can I go to a local electronic store and pick up a USB cable or does it have to be made by Garmin? HELP!

I have a Garmin Nüvi and if your USB cable is like mine, it's just a regular USB with a Mini USB end. Let me find a pic.

No it's not a normal usb cable. U can use the normal usb cable for data transfer, but not charging.
For charging, Garmin has swap one of the wires in their usb cord.
Atleast that's what on my Nuvi.
BTW, I'm guessing you'll have better luck at www.poi-factory.com
Lot's of infos there.

Avant: you forgot to mention which of those 2 usb is for your Garmin. The usb I have is EXACTLY like the left one, smaller one. So I have to go to Garmin to get their special usb cord??
I'm sure its not the cord b/c i plugged it up into the car and the cord has a light that turned on. The light indicates reception or something like that.. so if that light turns on then the cord is good. Its just the damn device that won't turn on!! =o(

GOOD info! thanks for the site. I just figured it was the same because, well for the most part they just look the same. never really used the USB cable for anything other than data loading...I charge it with the provided base in the car.
I was looking over the site that Kaizer posted and I'm gleaning that it possibly is the cord since they're "special" cords...what a waste of talent to re-engineer a USB cable LOL jk.
