2nd largest tint competition today

CPfilms is holding their tint competition today. CP films is the worlds largest film manufacturer in the world, they are responsible for Llumar, Formula One, Gila, and Vista. they actually make the majority of other films for other companies as well.

the tint competition consists of 24 of the US's best tinters. this year they offered me either a position in the contest or judge. since there are only 3 judges i chose to judge this year.

the winner of this competition will go with CP to the IWFE competition in vegas. i was in the vegas one 5 years back and it was scary as hell.

i'll post up some pics when i get back.

A tint contest???

Is there really that much skill involved???

I mean what does that involve? What do you judge on?
What seperates a average guy from a 1st place winner?

Good luck!

I'm sure it's based off speed and how clean it ends up being. Bubbles, lifts, etc would all deduct points. They've even had clear bra competitions.

there is 20 key areas we are judging. they wont let us watch, just the final product so im bored, and there isnt anything to really take pics of.

the judging criteria is crazy though. the winner of this is going with us to vegas for the national contest so they are preparing for that. winner gets $7500 and magazine coverage.

im bored as hell

there is 21 contestants chosen from the western US. [update].

i was chosen to judge, im not competing

its exactly the opposite of what youre thinking. this is a crazy competition. super serious with the best of the best tinters.

its down to 4 tinters right now, then 2, then the winner.

one of my guys is still in it. but he gets super nervous. he barely made the cut.

so the worlds tint off is next month in vegas, im not getting my hopes up cuz he was nervous for this western one. i know from personal experience that the worlds is 10 times more nerve racking.

but after judging the company wants me to run their presentation booth again for SEMA, so if youre their ill be the guy with the headset on showing CPFilms new products and how you use them. havent done this in 5 years but im down. so all the VIP guys at SEMA should come check me out.

true...but 8 out of 10 shops do it wrong.

we're looking for cleanliness of the car, a dirt/spec free tint job. no gaps, the tint should drop down below the door panel. the side edges should be tucked in at least 1/4". creases, tight top edges(no top gaps).

we are expecting a perfect job and deducting for everything we can see. the person running the comp. said i was the pickiest judge, but i was judging on my standards which is how i expect them done here.

all the other competitors were asking my guy "why are you pulling the door panel off? why are you wiping that area? why are you cleaning the whole door before you install?" its all obvious now after he won. its how we do it here.

if you guys seriously want to know about how to tell a good tint job, ask me at one of the meets. all of my windows are pretty close to perfect except 1. the front passenger has scratches from my dog, and i didnt position it right. i left it though because the curtains block it from being seen, even from the outside.

you can find a quality shop almost anywhere. the hardest places to find a good shop is vegas, florida, texas, and arizona. these places are super hot and the market is saturated because people see a quick buck. that lowers the price of tint jobs all over the state, then people others have to lower their prices to compete. when you lower your prices to get closer to low ballers your quality of work normally goes down. understandle because, why do top notch work for dirt cheap?

even here in murrieta/temecula there is over 17 shops that do tint. hard to believe from such a small town. but our name is good and it shows by the cars we tint and the quantity.

the guy that trained me now works in texas at a formula one shop. i'll get the shop name for you. but i'll try to get him to do it our style. at his shop now they make him do bad tint jobs with the computer cut system. but if you contact him straight he'll do it good. i'll get his number soon.

anyone can hit me up and i can refer a good shop in your area (if i know people there)

car was an 08 camry. for a tinter this car is one we dont like. and happens that we do about 5 a week. they chose this car for many reasons, it has a large back glass and the brake light cant be taken out, the doors have curve, and the quarter glass(the small triangle) is very hard to get perfect.
