Engine Mount Compressor

Anyone have any details and/or pictures of an Engine Mounted Air compressor for air suspension systems installed on a Japanese or European car?

I've only see these systems installed on S10s or Old Cadillacs and Regals. I just wanted to see how it could be fit in a tighter engine bay.

I think it'll be a tight fit, or too tight of a fit for an engine drivem compressor. They are pretty big in size. Slightly larger than a regular a/c compressor. An edc is actually a modified a/c compressor. Internals are modified to pump air instead of freon.

If you were to try and mount one in your ride, it would have to be next to your alternator. Most edc kits come with a pulley that replaces the one on the alternator, adding another belt groove for the edc. Kits come with universal brackets for universal installs. Im sure its very possible, its just the space is very limited or no space at all...

Back when it first came out I got one for my truck. It was almost $1000. Now its down to about $300-$500 for a kit. It pumps 9.52 cfm. That's plenty/overkill for a import/euro unless you plan on dancing/hopping your car around the parking lot. You'll be find with a regular electric compressor from viair or air zenith. Viair 380, 450 or 480 are great. Air zenith is fairly new to the air suspension market. Most people prefer air zenith over viair, but both are great compressors. They both pump over 2.8 cfm. That's alot for a vip car...

They are both great compressors. Viair has been around way longer than AZ. AZ pumps out just a bit more cfm's, its has a 100% duty cycle meaning it can stay continuously on (as does some higher model viairs), and is rebuildable (viair to my knowledge is not). They got rebuild kits for AZ compressors.

With a normal speed air management system, where it goes up and down slowly, an AZ or viair compressor can probably refill a 5gal tank faster than what it takes to air up your car....

+1 on too tight to fit... trucks/old schools have a lot of engine bay to spare and much simpler configurations. i would like to run an engine mount but i dont see it happening. dual 380 ftw.

Thanks for the replies

Yea, I gleaned that much a while back. Seems like the older AC compressors are the norm since they have lubrication chambers built into them, I was just wondering if there were any instances that you guys know of, where they were installed in European or Japanese cars...

So you've had an engine mount compressor on a previous vehicle? Interesting. Pros/Cons?

Holding them, they're pretty big and weighty, which was kinda interesting to me how it could be fit and if it was done by anyone that you guys may have known.

not a fan of electric compressors. They function just fine, they're just noisy as all get out.

i got one in my chevy truck. pros and cons... well its quiet. an electric compressor can be just as quiet if mounted correctly. you should check the oil level about every 2 weeks. when you rev the engine over 3000rpm it doesnt pump any faster, you can actually burn it up and blow the o-rings out (done it first hand).

here it is compared to my 200amp high output alternator....

We have installed a few EDC's and they are nice because they are very fast a quite, but installation is a PITA and if you do not always check the oil they will burn out and you will have to replace the pump.

AZ's are faster then viair, but they pull more amps and cost more $$. If you want to do a side/side. the Viair will give you a better value at $279.99 for the pair of 380's pulling 32 amps (both pumps together) with a CFM at 2.98 not to mention that you will have a fail-safe backup if a pump goes out you won't be left stranded.

http://www.viaircorp.com/d380c.html

The AZ's are $299. and pull roughly 40 amps (they don't say on site) with a CFM at 2.85 - 2.9 depending on where your looking at.

AZ's advertise replacement pistons, but viair also sells replacement parts but they don't advertise it.
