Weds SC fitment Part 2
After getting an inpsection notice last night at a road block I'm back on trying to make the rear wheels fit better. I have to go to a police station and show I have put different wheels on. I can then put the Weds back on but its an inconveince. I could not pull enough so I'm exploring options again.
Front: Flange pokes out 3mm while tire sits in side fender. -3.5 deg camber. Perfect.
Rear: Tire sidewall is poking out 15mm. Flange is poking out 22mm. -3.5 deg camber
First I will switch to Falken 265/30/19 instead of the 275/30/19 Toyo T1S. While the tires are off I will get the backpads machined 2mm. After machining poke will be 20mm. Rear wheel back pad thickness is currently 6mm from lug nut surface to back pad.
From there I need either camber or flares. If I camber it I will need another 6.8 deg camber. total would be - 10.3 (!) pretty extreme :( The other option is Diana flares for the rear and mold them in. I would not just bolt them on.
What do you guys think.

Yeah, I think the flares would be wise. Molded that would be really hot

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
If you do go with the diana flares, let me know how you go with them. I had a chat to my panel beater yesterday about flaring the guards on my car and all the options he gave me sounded very difficult. He said it might be better just to get fibreglass ones like the Dianas and work from there.
I'm a bit concerned about whether they would even give any clearance though, because they are designed to stick to the outside of the guard, not increasing the inner guard...

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
I think you cut the factory panel and then put the flare over top to increase clearance.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
if those flares are moded on there right and you do cut the factory panels, this will be one sick SC.
looking pretty mean by the way.

So whenever you buy new wheels the police have to approve it?
What kind of inspection is this? That sucks man...but your car looks good the way it is.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
Pretty sure the inspection notice came because of the 'poke' of the wheels he has. We have a similar thing here. If you get 'defected' for being too low, having dark windows, loud exhaust, wheels too big etc, you have to fix the defect and bring it to an authorised place for inspection.
Hmm... Interesting about the flares. Still not convinced about mating fibreglass to metal though...

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
Don't ruin what is one of the best cars on this forum.
TBH if you're driving something like that round, you got to expect to get "producers" as we call them here.
Go change the wheels back to standard ones, get authorised and whatever, and put the Weds back on.
If they stop you again, say you just been to a show or some sh1t.
Over here the law says the tyre tread must remain within the arch, in Germany it's the same. Little loophole in the law means that you can't be done for it, though sometimes they can get really picky.
One of our cars had a PG9 on it, this like car death sentence, again for poke on the wheels despite stretching the tyres, they said car was "unroadworthy" and then you have to take it to a test station and the crawl through the entire car looking for more faults. We sold the car with the PG9 on it, more hassle than it's worth TBH.
Other alternative is camber the wheels more and live with the tyre wear, I know Sunny (with the 190) does this.
Another thought, how about grind 5mm off the inside of the wheels???

Flares would be great and really finish your car off nicely!!!
Right now, it looks like the wheels are trying to run away afrom the car. :-\

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
you have coilovers right? have you tried lowering the car so that the camber arc will pull the wheels further into the body? you could just cruise to the police station or whatever with a ton of camber so it looks like your wheels fit

I can go a little lower but I won't get the amount of camber that I need to bring them in enough.
Thickness of the pad from the start of the lug nut dish to the bad of the pad is 6mm. 2mm would be about the most I could remove off the back of the wheels. I will definitely be doing that.
Yep Dominik. We have 3 levels of inspections here in BC. Level 3 is what I got. Go to any police station and show anyone that I have made the fix. No charge. Level 2 is inspection at a certafied inspection facility. 75 bucks for that. Level 1 is the worst. They strip your plates and impound your car. The cop also gave me a hard time about the stretching saying that only show vehicles can do that , and that if I take a corner at hwy speeds the tire will rip off haha
What worries me is that even after I change my wheels and go to the police station this will be on my record if my plates are run again. Instant level 2 inspection next time.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
Ah, thats where we differ. 'Level one' inspections are not recorded in our state, so you can keep getting done for the same thing here.
But we only have 2 levels; either it has to be inspected by an authorised mechanic, or it has to be inspected by a government testing station - the latter involving taking a fine tooth comb over the whole car and *any* mechanical or other defects must be fixed. Level one inspections can be sorted out by paying the authorised mechanic an extra fifty (on top of the 70 inspection fee) ;D
Sorry, i know this doesnt help with your inspection notice, but its interesting to see how different states/countries deal with illegal mods...
Anyway, if it is recorded and a secondlevel inspection next time, then i think the only way is to get the flares. You need to make sure its fully legal so you dont end up with a level 3 later on down the track.

And after you thought it was all over. Sorry you couldn't just sit back and enjoy the rims man. The law is a pain.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
I'll have to look into the inspections further to see if this level 3 will go on my record. Hopefully it doesn't haha
David H , yep I'll just say I was at a show recently. Thanks Xotic. Thats what I get for not going widebody in the rear. Maybe I should bite the bullet and get the BN or Runner wide rear fenders and have them molded in.

Ah, but if you do widebody, it would be too subtle and you wouldnt get the 'wow' factor that flares give...

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
Here's something to think about...
Even if you do go through all this hassle, to avoid cops, do you think it'll really even accomplish anything? You're going to put flares or blister fenders on the car, to serve what purpose? Don't you think a cop would be just as willing to write you another inspection ticket even with that stuff done for something else just as silly? It seems you are just upset about getting the ticket, I wouldn't worry to much about, everyone gets tickets... it's part of the game.
I think the car looks great as-is. Personally I would like it a lil lower, but that's just me. lol
O... btw I rejoined the Lexus family over the weekend...hehe

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
If a cop wants to write you a ticket he will do. They will find something wrong with the car. Even if the wheels don't stick proud of the arches then they will have you for the stretched tyres.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
You are bang on JZZ (ps which lexus did you buy)
I'm a little pissed about the ticket. I'll try machining, more stretch and maybe more camber and then flares as a last resort. Yep they didn't like the stretched tires. I wonder if that would pass an inspection ! ha
Man this thing is so low I can only get into a few driveways and every speed bump is scrrraaape aha I would need to air bags to go lower but I'd rather do that on a VIPcar next :)

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
You make them fit... you are already so close that putting flares on will actually be a detriment now because then they will extend past the wheels, and all the work up till now will be for naught. You don't even have that much camber in the back yet! Go that route before going flares (actually, don't go flares AT ALL). And as for the safety issue... ask whoever bugs you about it next time if they can provide proof that the number of stretched tire blowouts have caused more catastrophic damage/danger than non-stretched tire blowouts... because when a stretched tire goes out, the tread actually remains on the rim, allowing you to still drive yourself to safety. When a normal tire setup blows out, that tread ends up on the freeway, putting you on the ground, and potentially fucking up whoever happens to run over that runaway tread. Present that tidbit of info to the antagonist and see what they have to say about that...

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
hell yes. I agree that they would be sunk after adding flares. I'll suck it up and get some spare rear upper control arms for you to cut and reweld and we'll go from there. I'll let you know when I have some in my hands.

Re: Weds SC fitment Part 2
Actually, or just find out if they're interchangable with the UCF10/20 arms. I believe they are, but am still waiting on confirmation from a friend... but the more resources we have working on this, the better! I've got a little something brewing for the UCAs (f and r) for the UCFs, and I'm pretty sure they'll work on first gen SCs and GSes also... so it's a win win if that is the case

I think if anything do blister quarter panels and not flares. Flares will not flow with the body. But try to make your current setup work. Your car is the reason why my buddy wants an SC now.
