shaving wheel disk!!!?????

wondering if it is possible to shave the disk of the wheel down.... im talking bout shaving down hi disks and making them low or superlow disk....
 
do any shops do this like with a cnc or what????
 
any info would be greatly appreciated.

Difference between hi and lo disk is not at the thickness of the face. If you do that, the whole wheel rigidity will be in question IMHO. Just my two cents

shaving the disk will bring your offset higher. and your lip will not magically get deeper. 

a good machine cnc shop can do it depending on your pad profile and if there is enough thickness to shave.

Thanks.  This might help me sell my Auto Couture wheels since the disk sizes are about 50mm front and back

yup, your high disk all around so you shouldn't have any problems milling it down by 10mm to 20mm. just make sure u find a expierenced machine shop who knows what they are doing.

yeah, im doing the same thing but im also re-barreling the wheels that way i can get more lip (more rim+less disk=more offset/lip)

no need more lip... i just need to get them to fit...

I was thinking the same at first but I dont think I am.  I could just sell my wheels and use the money that I would of used shipping the wheels out, getting refinish and getting custom barels made- to buy new rims :shrug:

assuming we're talking about 3 piece wheels.   If you do shave the disk make sure you will clear the inner barrel with your suspension AND the air bag if you got one or body.    If I were you I wouldn't try and shave down too much.   Aren't most wheels designed where the pad tapers to alittle under or the same size as the brake disc top hat?   If you shave too much I think the mating surface would increase.   I'm not sure if that would do anything.

Wait... Oh shit. Read wrongly. Nevermind.

If the wheels are already PCD'd (the lug bolt holes are drilled) you can only
shave 3mm safely. Shave any more and you cut away the lug seat area so much
that it kills the strength in this region. 

If you think about it, if you shaved about 9mm off you'd have NO lug seats in the
wheels left at all, just holes straight through the wheel. :O

Thats what I was originally thinking

SoCal is correct.  It depends how much material there is before you start shaving off the lug seat.  

I can only speaks for Weds Kranze but the disc is irrelevant.  The distance to the lug holes was the same on MID disc and SLo disc.   I could have shaved 2mm before starting to take material away from the seat.

your fenders will need to come out approx 2"...and that's with camber and stretch tire...
 
i suggest you flare it and not pull...pulling 2" will not look right in the rear imo...will look too artificial...i had 12" -24 on my rear...

Make sure you have enough backspace.

oh ya that's right. I forget about the lug seats. my bad. 

so basically regardless how how thick the pad is due to high disk set ups, you can only take off up to 3-5mm right ? or do some wheels get thicker back pad after the lug seats ? depending how much material is left behind the seat area.

i have a friend that runs a machine shop, he REFUSES to do this no matter how many times i ask. he doesnt want to be responsible for any mishaps that may happen. he says its pretty easy to screw the whole thing up.

hmmm, i thought about everything except that. ill have to check that out when i get to my rims (in another 7 months :pat: )

You can shave more than 3mm, but you'll need to have the lug holes slugged.
