My garage set up...

not quite the 'ultimate' set up but it works for now...it feels good to have a garage to store shit...everything in hawaii had to be in the house or in the back yard...finally getting settled in cali and picked up some goodies...still need a few things including compressor and portable lift...

That way the color of the engine bay and or inside of the trunk, isnt too off the exterior color

I thought about that color, that powder bluish color though.

bleh, not a fan of silver...either black, white or red for me...maybe because i paint silver cars ALL the time...dupont just had a survey out and it said silver is the #1 selling color in N. America and Europe...

I also read a survey that said gray/silver is the most boring color and that it really doesn't appeal to the ladies! HAhhahaha!

when i see silver it reminds me of honda civics...... take a look around at the older hondas and you'll see that color prevalent hahahahahaha I know the same argument can be made for other cars and colors for that matter but really silver and that green remind me of hondas! :smiley-rofl:

The nice part about mine though, is it's more of a pewter/perl color and not so much your typical gray/silver that sikNlow is talkin about...

honda has a really ugly silver...they use the biggest metallics out there...bmw and mercedes have pretty nice silvers...they use black and fine silver...and some greens and blue to tint the color a bit...Ford has a really ugly silver too...
 
silver is silver...either way, never been a fan of it...BUT, you can get away with a car wash longer than other colors...

i have a work bench...its about 81" wide...have a vise bolted to that and i'm looking for a baldor bench buffer and grinder...
 
also need a miller welder...i might go for a millermatic 135 or 140...something that uses 110v since i'll have my compressor running on 230v...also need a slide hammer/dent puller...

na i dont do anything with cars for a living lol. im actually a full time student/google security..ive been working on cars since i was ehh..like 13-14 with the pops..bodywork i picked up while building a few s13's with friends. I can work fiber glass and body filler(i never use bondo). I dont use power sanders either lol. i guess i should start. i have always prepped my cars by hand. I felt i can just get a better finishing result.This is why i was always too scared to spray a car i just spent 80 hours on prep on just to mess it up. Thats why i have wanted to find someone who can spray to talk to and maybe work with on my q45 this summer. Im doing all the prep i just need someone to lay the paint for me.

well the best way to learn is to paint your own cars...you'd rather mess up on your own ride than a paying customer or good friend...sure it may not come out the way you want but at least you'll have one complete under your belt...take pride that you can actually paint a complete...most guys won't attempt it...gotta do it sooner or later...better sooner than later...it definitely helps having someone guide you though...
 
i use all air tools...i worked in a production shop so i got the DA down pat...i can lay filler and use only my DA to fix small dents on flat panels...
 
 
i always black on body lines and big areas and when primer is layed over filler (also heavily depends on color of car too)...
 
i'd like to learn more on glassing...i'm not that good...more hack than anything...but i take the extra time to make it nice...
 
 
 
what kind of guns do you use?

no guns yet. i dont have anyone to walk with me through the points of painting a car. if you would take the time to teach, i would love to take the time to learn. Im looking right now for someone who would be willing to sit with me for a day or two on planning out my paint. I have access to a booth here in san jose at a decent price. I will end up probably buying my own paint and spraying the car myself since i cannot find someone to do it for me that i can trust. Where do you plan on spraying your cars? Now from talking to you i just might spray my own car to get a complete under my belt..And i do want to do a color change anyways.

there's a place up here in sac that charges 50 bucks...booth is cross draft and isn't the cleanest but every car needs a good wetsand and buffing anyway...i like to burry all my rubbish on the 2nd and 3rd coats so nibbing is only necessary...and its large enough to paint the bumpers on stands and still have room to spray the car...
 
if you have a semi decent garage and a compressor set up, i would spray the jambs at home...that way you can take your time taping everything nicely and take the time to pull parts off the car and put them back on...the jambs don't need to be dust free anyway...as long as they're smooth and glossy, it's good enough...unless of course you want a full on $10,000 job which includes wetsand and buffing of jambs...way overkill for the anyone who doesn't own a $70,000 + car...
 
i have like 8-9 guns i think...shit, i don't even know anymore...i have/do use them all though...
 
i have 2 sata2000's for base...1 sata for metallics and 1 sata for solids...really you only need one good base gun and that's for metallics...pearls don't really need to be broken up unless its microsequence or bigger...factory pearls are too fine and generally don't matter...big metallics like ford and honda's need very good atomization...the metallics need to lay down evenly...i actually don't really care for my other sata for solids...it breaks up the paint too fine and hard to get good coverage...i need to choke my fan way down and blast it faily close...I guess i'm too impatient...oh yeah, both are 1.4 tips...
 
my money maker is my iwats lph-400...its also a 1.4 tip for high solid clears...this things is great...the fan width at full open is like 18"...which is pretty nuts...i cut it down to about 8"...totally depends on the brand of clear, reducers, activators, etc...but the iwata sprays at way lower preassure...low pressure means less rubbish...you can really work WITH the clear instead of fighting it when spraying for example a sata2000RP...the sata RP is a air hog and needs to be sprayed high pressure...i see those guys are work using them and i get pissed when i'm in the prep station next to them...they have overspray like a mofo and it always settles on my car...the RP does lay clear down really nicely but its not too user friendly...
 
let see whatelse...man, i love talking about paint...i actually start my first day of work on monday in cali...we'll see how this waterborne thing goes...its gonna take some getting used to but i'm excited...
 
what's your prep work process?

and don't be scared of runs or sags...runs are totally acceptable on completes(lots of material being applied)...just don't make a run on your first coat because then you're in trouble...a good painter has made EVERY mistake and knows how to fix them all...

damn you really need to come to the norcal meet this month. Well my prep always starts with pretty much removing all the clear so i start with a 180 or 220...then i will clean the car down to see if i can find any chips or dents. after that i will take those down to metal. either pull them out or fill in then block. Take the whole car down with a 320 after that, clean it, high build primer, block with 400-500 then take it down with 800-1000 wet sand..
 
 
i was never taught what to do. My thing was well, if i want it to look nice. the base has to be extra nice. So i would make my primer as glass as possible. But i was told from people if i do that it will not give anything the base to stick to. And this is one of the main reasons i have not sprayed a car myself. I will try to get some body work done on my car before the june meet if you come out so you can check it out also. Maybe give me some pointers and i just might shoot my car myself.

i highly encourage you to shoot your own car...i don't mind being in the booth with you to make sure your gun set up is right and your overlap is good...the most i can do for you is to lay down the 1st coat...the 2nd and 3rd coat you can shoot...after the first coat is on and mistakes on the 2nd and 3rd coat can be easily fixed...
 
true, the base and clear follows the subsequent layer...if the metal is not straight, the primer won't be...base will follow and then magnetized by the clear...
 
the prep can change for different cars...

this my process for light color metallics (silver, pewter, champagne, etc).
 
after the bodywork is finished with 150...feather out the area with DA 320 (if its real chicken scratch, hit it with 240 first)...then red scuff pad the whole area you will primer...tape off then primer...
 
after your primer has set up, guide coat, knock down with 320 DA, guide coat again, then 600 wet...its important to have clean paper...and wrinkles or dirt in your water can cause the sand paper to gauge and cause deeper scratches which will show up in your final finish...
 
solid colors like black and white are easy...
 
after the primer is set up...DA 320 then 400 wet...
 
the people you talked to is right...the base needs something to bite on...if its too smooth, you risk poor adhesion and can cause flaking...if the base doesn't stick to the primer, anything you put on top of that (i.e. clear) is useless...you're also more prone to runs...if you think about rolling a bowling ball on a nice slick surface it will glide much easier than rolling it on a putting green...
 
right before i left i had to paint a F-250 solid black...i knocked the whole car down with 320 DA using a soft pad (which is similar to 400-500 wet) and the car came out cherry...all the orange peel matched and everything...if you prep too good on one spot of the car, that area may appear like glass and the rest can have factory orange peel...

the stock color black emerald pearl(dark green) just so i dont have to spray the door jams and it is a nice color

the only reason im scared of doing the stock color is i have heard that if you dont spray evenly with pearls or anything with flake you will notice it because the flake will be thicker in some areas and will cause the color to be off..

pearls in stock colors are very fine and break up easy...you won't see tiger stripes or blotching like in metallics...trust me, you won't have any problems...
 
it is quite a bit of work to paint the jambs though...that's something you will want to do before you paint the whole car...but like i said earlier, jambs don't need to be perfect so it's easy to prep...red scuff pad and you're done...
 
black is the nicest (and easiest to spray along with white) but hardest to maintain...actually, buffing and polishing will probably the most hardest and time consuming step...
