sluggish acceleration

anyone experiencing very slow acceleration on a '99 Q45t? freeways are fine but on surface streets, grandmas in station wagons kick my ass! i was thinkin' bad knock sensors or bad catalytics. oh yeah no check engine lights.:signdammit:

i have the same problem. I had my uncle check the compression and 2 of the cylinders are running very low on the compression. Once in a while the engine would stutter when the car rolls to a complete stop. It's been bugging me for the longest time. My uncle said it might be the coil plugs or something. anyone?? any experience with this problem?

If your compression is low you either have bad rings, bad head gasket, warped head or leaky valves. Coil packs and spark plugs wont change compression.

ok thank you very much. I'm going to take it back pretty soon for a check up. It has been bothering me for the longest time.

I don't know, when I mash the pedal off the line, my car bolts like a tiger. I think for what it is: big, heavy, 4 door luxury sedan, it's got plenty of Ompf. I have the NGK Iridium IX plugs, I noticed a better off the line accel over the stock NGK Plat's right away. But I never felt my Q was slow. If all maint has been done on time, it should be good. 60k plug changes per factory intervals, try the Iridium IX to see if it helps!

hmm i had this same problem w/ my Y34 m45 with sluggish acceleration. I could feel the car misfiring and it seemed to be in limp home. But my CEL would come on only during cold start then go away.

It was intermittent it turned out to be the one of the header/ exhaust manifold mounted o2 sensors.

I'd check the plugs tho as everyone else said, and compression. If anyone u know has a consult reader maybe plug it in see if there are any codes coming up, if so look at the FSM for what the code is.

Hmm, yea a compression check would be the best thing to do. If everything there checks out ok, I say do the routine maintenance stuff, oil and filter change, air and fuel filter change, spark plugs, pcv valve, fuel treatment and so on. My car at 148K drove like the day I got it when it had 105Kjust from keeping up with the stuff mentioned.

I know you have a Y33 but G50's commonly have off-the-line sluggishness due to:

1. (easiest) dirty MAF and throttle body
2. Knock sensors
3. Fuel pump and FPCU

Try cleaning the maf first as its so easy and cheap ($4. bottle of maf sensor cleaner). It helped my super rough idle on my G50. Q45.org has alot of info. G/L

hey randy

you ever figure this out?

i've got the same problem, as well as my car "stutters" at lights. been waiting for CEL but it's not coming on.

i'm getting about 13mpg =*(

what do you all get for mpg? (btw AE Q45)

I have 97Q with 187K and I replaced OEM spark plugs, air & fuel filter, AFM, KS, IAC, TB, Valve cover gaskets.

I did not notice any difference until I replaced both rear O2 and car reacts totally different.

Now I can burn my rear 275/40/18 by punching the gas down to the floor after I turn off my TCS.

It also eliminated the down shift kick that I used to feel when comming to a stop with AC running.

I had this issues since 55K on the Q and Metro infiniti of Monrovia, CA (DT an idot ) told me several trips to the dealer that it's normal for these cars to do kick a little my ass. I would never take my car to Metro infiniti for sure.

Now my Q drives and shift better than ever with more torque. May be you should replace the both O2 regardless of ECL if your car is over 100k.

do either a bad knock sensor or mass air flow sensor trigger the CEL?

thanks for the advice.

i love the car, but the 13mpg is horrid since it isn't supposed to be like that.

and I drive like a grandpa in this thing - i was trained to drive the prius "pulse and glide" by my prius, so i drive like that most of the time now.

i changed the KS but not a big change w/ acceleration. i got a CEL and its the EGR valve this time. but my main guess is the catalytic converters. i bet they're plugged.

Mine does the same thing unless it's below around 50 degrees ambient outside and the car runs totally different. I think my next mod is going to be a new exhaust w/ new cats and new O2s...see if that helps.

when starting the car in the morning and gunning it before normal operating temp the car bones out...quick. as soon as it hits operating temp then the hesitation and slow acceleration happens. a malfunctioning EGR valve has these symptoms and also a plugged up catalytic( when the catalytic elements heat up) WHEN ANYBODY FINDS OUT LET ME KNOW!!

The clogged converter is my best guess. Sometimes when I give it hell, I can smell what I am pretty sure is the converter. I would replace them with some high flow units maybe and see how that works.

just following along to see what you guys find ive been fighting the same issues for a while.

I have note replaced my o2 sensor yet. but i do get a cel for it about once a month; what that has "told me" is that it was time to weld up the bottom of the cats.
After i welded them up the light would not come back on. but i would stilh have the shutter and shitty take offs

I would change your fuel filter. I replaced mine just for maintenance and it made a difference with off the line acceleration. At least i noticed it.

For gas milage I changed the spark plugs and the drivers side Rear O2 Sensor. It made a noticeable difference. On the O2 sensor I got a SES light tho....

I did all this around 85K miles and it made a difference on acceleration and gas milage.

BTW Y33s have 4 oxygen sensors.

The Shudder part is probably your coilpacks going...as for the sluggish acceleration, it could be the things mentioned, but I changed my O2 sensors and still nothing. I have to wonder how much of it is the ECU programmed to be "Luxury"??

i had the same sluggish problem. my sel came on for a bad knock sensor. i replaced both knock sensors/spark plugs(ngk iridium IX),flushed the tranny(new filter and gasket). now it feels great. pulls so much better off the line at the light. just gotta install the fuel filter next. gonna do that this weekend.

+1 now i wanna change out my O2 sensors also!

Cleaned out my maf didn't make it better. So I'm going to try the knock sensor, it should be a 8.6 hour install. The part number for the knock sensor it the same as a ka24de, sr20det, and a vq35de. The knock sensor goes for around $170, so if you have any spare parts from a 240sx or 300zx itll work.

One thought I had was this. Are most of you aware that the Q starts out in 2nd gear? Unless you mash the pedal to the floor, it's a 2nd gear start. If you start out at 1/2 throttle then suddenly mash it, you'll feel it drop a gear to 1st. You have to put the pedal ALL the way down for it to start in 1st gear, this will make a huge difference. Probably you all know this already, but like I said, just a thought I had the other day.

I swear, my car is a rocket for it's size and age. Yesterday I pulled across 2 lanes into the traffic going left and in about 3 seconds I was already going faster than everyone. I raced a 1st gen Q that according to Nico people was a well cared for good one and beat that guy, even though the 1g Q is supposedly "more powerful and quicker". Of course, none of those morons could believe it so they all said something must have been not 100% w/ his G50-Q. I know we'll lose against an E55 or whatever, but I really have no complaints w/ my cars power. 23 years as a licensed driver, driven countless vehicles and think the Y33 holds it's own just fine.

i cleaned out the egr valve, cleaned the maf and added fuel system cleaner w/ techron...same problems. im thinking that the bpt needs replacing. its the valve connected to the egr responsible for applying vacuum to the egr's diaphragm. a malfunctioning one may render the egr faulty. shoot its cheaper than replacing the egr first...i'll give it a shot

randyboy or anyone here, do you have a diy on how to clean the egr valve. my 99 y33 has about 147k on it and i'm getting around 13 mpg- 50/50 street/hwy driving.

i was going to try the bg 44k, change the plugs and hopefully clean the egr if i can get a good diy on that.
