Painters Tape.

I might be drivin down to cali to get something installed. I am really worried about rock chips messing up my paint. I have seen people use painters tape on there cars before and wanted to know if anyone recommends this or not?! What I am worried about with the tape is the sun heating up the adhesive and leaving a gooey residue once taken off.

I have used painter's tape plenty of times and it doesn't get sticky. I have driven from SoCal up to NorCal and actually left the painter's tape on my car for a few days after I got back up to NorCal and my car was fine. Make sure you use the blue tape and it is low tack so it's fine. There is a purple painter's tape which is less sticky but I'm not sure how it works.

the blue painters tape is what most ppl i know use and if the sticky residue is left behind just use goo gone and a clean microfiber towel to wipe it off. get the citrus one, smells really fruity!

I've use blue tape for every SEMA drive from LA to Vegas.
Never any problems, but if you have a cheap paint job it might stick to the tape.

The Purple tape might fall off during that long drive just cause it's less sticky, so just check that before you go with it.

Any residue should just wipe off easily with either one.

So just make sure your paint is quality and you should be fine with either blue or purple.

One other note: start at the top of the hood or bumper and add layers downward.

If you do it bottom to top the tape edges will want to peel up at speed.
