Bangkok Thailand..trip and pics...
So I surprised my wife with a trip to Bankok for her birthday this year. She had never been there so she was excited. We had a blast from the start. Our trip entailed a long flight to Tokyo before actually flying to Thailand. It wasn't so bad because we were on JAL. Along with the Sky Royals and our DS Lites, the first few hours of the flight were actually good...until Mr. Stinky-air-guitar-weirdo's personal tv wouldn't work so the lovely and kind JAL flight attendants put him next to us since we had an empty seat in our row. Of course, they kindly asked us if it was okay first. My first thoughts were, "hell no" but then again, it wasn't our seat so we said okay. Boy, did that prove to be a bad idea. The minute he sat down, we smelled of funky, sweaty feet. We were both napping but out of the corner of my eye, I could see him drumming and playing air guitar while listening to his IPod. He was a little strange. Anyway, I got the brunt of the dude's smell. Boy, we were so happy when the plane touched down and we were rid of Mr. Stinky.
Although, the flight to Thailand was about 3 hours shorter than the first leg of the trip, it seemed just as agonizing. We did get to sit on the upper deck of the 747 which had a little bit more leg room. We watched Spiderwick Chronicles to take up some time. We finally made it to Thailand and it was late evening. We got through immigration without any problems and made our way down to the baggage area. There, we met Ton our tour guide for the trip. His English was very good and we were impressed. I knew no Thai except for "sawatdee ka." He guided us to our private van and handed us both a wooden elephant and a little lei of jasmine flowers. Our trip to the hotel was about an hour. We arrived late that night we just went to bed after getting "settled in".
Day 1:
In the morning, we had breakfast in the hotel. The hotel had this amazing "continental" breakfast. However, it was nothing like a continental breakfast in the States. We were both pleasantly surprised. The breakfast consisted of a range of different cuisine including an omelet and waffle bar, certainly exceeding my expectations of a meager continental breakfast. After breakfast, I proceeded to take my wife shopping before our spa day at the Ananda Spa. We walked down this "colorful" road and on the way we were met by two tuktuk drivers and a persistently friendly Thai man who wanted to divert us to some other area. Anyway, we finally made it to the BMT Sky Train. It reminded us of Japan, costing only a mere 30 baht to where we wanted to go. The Sky Train took us right to this shopping mall which was just around the corner from the spa...riiiight. LOL. Boy was that wrong. We started walking down this narrow street for about 10 minutes, mind you, it was dangerous because there were no sidewalks and taxis kept flying by us. My wife was getting annoyed so we finally flagged down a taxi driver and he, too, had no idea where the spa was. Out of the corner of my eye, I see the spa. So, we get out and unbeknownst to us, we were headed toward a labyrinth of elevators, floors and towers. This place was SO hard to find. My wife gave up and sat down in this area next to a pool while I went to go ask for directions and found it. Well, once we got there all our troubles were erased. Our couples spa day consisted of a 30 minute body scrub, 30 minute bath and a 90 minute, can you believe that, 90 minute Thai body massage. So, we got naked and had to put on these disposable undies that looked very attractive *um, not* I think the most enjoyable part aside from the heavenly massage, was sitting in the special bath with my wife. Surprisingly enough, we both fit in it comfortably. It was very relaxing and a great way to start off our vacation. We went back to the hotel and then did some more shopping. Shopping is SUPER cheap...
Day 2:
After our anything but continental breakfast, we were picked up by Ton for a tour of the Buddhist temples. Ton, with his impeccable English, first took us to see the Golden Buddha. He told us that the Golden Buddha weighed about 5.5 tons and was made of solid gold. During the wars between Thailand and its neighboring countries, the Buddha was covered in cement to mask its true nature. We offered a lotus flower to the Buddha and proceeded to the smaller Buddhist images and assisted in covering the images with gold foil. We didn't quite understand the significance of that task though. Afterwards, we offered some incense. We learned that during the farming season, the monks would not walk around and would stay in the temples. If they were to walk around, they would not have a good harvest. People come to the temples to offer food to the monk. Our next stop was the Reclining Buddha Temple. On our way there, we passed through Chinatown and the wholesale flower market. I guess every place has its own Chinatown. Before we stopped at the temple, Ton took us through a wholesale fish market which bordered the Chaopraya River. He took us along this path to the river which we were able to get a picture of the one of the famous stupas that weren't actually on our tour. That was pretty cool. We finally made it to the Reclining Buddha. He was freakin' HUGE. Ton said it was the third largest Reclining Buddha. I can't fathom what the first largest one looked like. Anyway, we offered 40 baht, to the Buddha. They gave us tins full of coins. We dropped one coin into each of the 108 metal pots located along the backside of the Reclining Buddha as some kind of offering. The grounds of the surrounding temple were extraordinary. The temple's roof consisted of these intricately designed ceramic tiles. My wife bought some Buddha drawings from a street vendor before we made our way to the van. Our next stop was the Royal Lapidary which my wife thought was just a history lesson and tour of the gems that Thailand exports. We looked at how the gems are retrieved and then cleaned, cut and set into fine jewelry. I surprised her with a pink sapphire and diamond ring that I had custom made there, she had NO idea. Haha, it was perfect. We went back to the hotel then headed out for shopping once again.

Day 3:
My wife really wanted to ride elephants so I arranged a trip to the Samphran Elephant Ground and Park. We didn't have Ton on this trip because I arranged it through the hotel. We did miss him. The tour guide we were stuck with spoke English but she had a thick accent coupled with the fact that she spoke a thousand words a minute; it was quite difficult to understand her. She was friendly in a "I'm-just-your-tour-guide" sort of way. She spoke as if it were rehearsed and only spoke when it was her cue. It cracked us up. The trip to the elephant grounds was about 1 hour. Our private car was a W211 E500, so the ride was quite nice. When we arrived, we were greeted by a surprise picture that was later put on a dish and sold to us for 200 baht. We bought it because the look on our faces was priceless. Anyway, we first went to see the Asian Crocodiles. They looked sleepy or drugged or something. There were hundreds of them just laying about and not moving. EXCITING! Our tour guide then took us to the "Crocodile Wrestling" show but it ended up just being a crocodile tug-o-war. It was funny at first and then my wife started to feel bad for the crocs. When she first saw the boys enter the croc pit, she felt a bit uneasy but later saw how her feelings were totally unnecessary. The crocs were so docile. They looked as if they just wanted to sleep and be left alone because they had to be pulled and prodded in order to get them onto the platform. The show consisted of a series of comedic routines, with some tugging of the crocs, and sticking hands and their heads into the crocs mouth. It was amusing, at best. Afterwards we made it over to the Rose Park where the elephants were waiting. We had to walk up this platform that enabled us to climb on the elephants back. We took a nice 30 minute stroll through the park. My wife loved it. The elephant was extremely gentle and even posed perfectly for a photo op. After the ride, we posed with this smaller elephant. I tipped the elephant, who grabbed the money out of my hand with its trunk. After our ride, we watched a funny magic show which had a Thai magician and his cross-dressing assistant with a bad makeup job (think really bad tranny). Then, out came the elephants that played soccer, danced, and then put on a reenactment of a historical war. I wish I could have understood the narrator but he spoke only in Thai. At the end we fed the elephants pieces of sugarcane. One of the elephants slobbered all over my wife's hand with his trunk. LOL. It tickled her something crazy. We went back to the hotel and then headed out for even more shopping...yes, more shopping.
Day 4:
We took the sky train to Chatachuk Market or JJ. JJ consisted of a maze of vendors and shops. It's like the swap meet on steroids. There were thousands of vendors and even more people. They had things of every sort there which ranged from house wares to fine art. We ended up buying a bunch of different things and they were all so CHEAP. My wife couldn't believe the prices. We spent several hours there and even got lost for a bit. On the outskirts of the market, we saw a street vendor selling fried creepy crawlies, all sorts of insects and ish. Haha, my wife was grossed out. She couldn't believe her eyes. Unfortunately, I didn't think to take a picture of it. After our shopping trip, we went back to the hotel and took a rest. In the evening, I had made arrangements for a dinner cruise on the Chaopraya River. The food was good and for the first hour and a half it was pretty decent. The scenery was pretty majestic and romantic. We saw a few historic places along the river, some we had seen the other day. Our night was accompanied by some decent karaoke singers and a saxophone player who thought said I was a "beautiful man". I seriously think he was hitting on me...haha, freakin' wife was laughing her ass off. The last half hour of the ride, the singers and the crew got into partying and dancing. My wife and I danced one slow song but they kept trying to pull us onto the dance floor. They ended the night with YMCA. LOL. It was hilarious. We left with a souvenir of a corny photoshopped picture of us on the boat...classic.
That was the end of our trip. The next morning we woke up early to get to the airport. Our flight back home was quicker and before we knew it, we were back in Hawaii. It was a very memorable first trip to Thailand for my wife and a cool 4th trip for me (second time to Bangkok).

And yes..that's a Nihonjin kombini (convenience store) in Thaland, they were everywhere...like more than in Japan!:

I'm Sicilian and yes, I shave my head. Keeps me way more cool in the muggy heat. I used to change up my hair like so many times..all different colors, styles, etc. People that watched our dvd's (Grip Video & Drift Society) might remember my hair transformations. After the last mohawk I shaved it off and it pretty much stayed that way...I like it and so did the wife. Good thing I don't have a weird shaped head..haha! I guess I do show a resemblance to Howie..haha.

I gotta say I truly underestimated Thailand. I thought it was gonna be a boring trip, but i had the time of my life, something COMPLETELY different than what I'm used to. I can't wait to go back. Great pics! Did you guys check out the floating market?
