Maybe a sticky or part of Contribution 101

Well, being a 'new guy' here, I figured I'd add a little contribution to the VIP 101 thread.

For the most part, we usually hear about the 'genuine' VIP cars- the big-bodied sedans from overseas as well as a few Euros (though Euros are typically a means of debate between Vip enthusiasts), but rarely, do we hear about some other instances of vehicles that can be 'VIP-inspired' unless we search through dozens of threads. This thread is simply to bring all of that information together into a single place, where new enthusiasts to the 'culture' can get a general 'feel' for what may be considered an 'acceptable' platform other than the 'Traditional' ones. The information I have gathered, are listed below.

*Note* This is in no way the 'end all be all' list, but rather a compilation of models that I have searched based on information here. I have excluded those that I think would be able to 'pull off' the look or rather, have the 'potential' to do so from the USDM camp. That way, there will be no arguements as to what can and can't be used. Also, I have included some links for images of the 'Alternates'. All credit goes to the Brand Directory thread found in the VSC Lounge. http://www.vipstylecars.com/forums/showthread.php?t=91

Traditional Platforms that 'Purists' use:
USDM designations:

Lexus GS series
Lexus LS series
Infiniti Q45
Infiniti M45

Alternate platforms that seem to fit the "Inspired/Styled'
USDM designations:

Nissan Maxima/Cefiro (A32)

Nissan Maxima/Cefiro (A33)

Traditional Van platforms

Scion XB
Honda Odyssey
Toyota Previa

Alternate Van platforms

Mazda MPV (LW3W/LWFW)

Lexus RX300 (haven't seen one done as of yet, but it is also known as the Toyota Harrier IIRC)
http://www.fabulous.co.jp/products/luxurysuv/harrier/

Lexus RX350
http://www.wald.co.jp/english/catalog/lexus/rx/350/350.html

Corolla Wagon (E140)

Honda Accord Wagon (CE1)

Subaru Legacy Wagon (BH)

Subaru Legacy Wagon (BP)

I hope this list allows others to take a more general approach towards the VIP 'culture', particularly if they are on a budget. Though not everyone can associate themselves with a high-end luxury vehicle, many of these 'alternates' may provide a means by which one can 'have fun' as well as 'learn' what ideas are necessary before committing oneself to a more expensive vehicle that will, ultimately, 'break the bank'

I think this would be your opinion at best. Most of the cars you posted are reminiscent of other styles which get closely related to vip, but are not vip. Wagonist style is not vip, but often meshed with it depending on the style the owner chooses. Try not to confuse the styles or too closely relate them.

I understand and it wasn't my intention to confuse anyone on what is or isn't VIP. Unless it is a tradtional platform, nothing else can be considered 'VIP' only 'inspired'. Those other vehicles which I had listed are capable of the 'inspired' look, if the owner chooses (as you said).

The basis of the post was to at least show other individuals what could be used in the 'inspired' look, if they did not have, or could not obtain a true VIP platform. The concept is very much similar to the N/A vs FI debates. If you want big power, for the least amount of money, it would be easier to start off with a forced induced engine. However, if you are new to engines or are stuck (for whatever reason) with a natural aspirated engine, it would be more logical to start off with what you have in order to learn how to do things correctly. It is better to gain experience rather than just head-first into a project.

If someone has any of the vehicles above (though some of them are not cheap by any means), to someone new, it would be better if they learned off what they have rather than get something traditional then ruin it. In that regard, they'll have a bit more understanding of the type of committment that is needed. Is it easier to start off with the correct platform in the first place? Absolutely. But it doesn't hurt to have fun with what you have. It definitely won't be 'VIP', but the ease of pulling off the 'inspired' look would be easier than attempting to do so with a platform that has no aftermarket for such. I remember an individual on here with a Kia Optima (I believe that is what is was). Most people wouldn't dream of even attempting to do something with that (or the Hyundai Sonata), at least not stateside. But coming here and viewing some of the work that others have done, it was quite surprising that individuals actually attempted such, and done so with elegance.

For example, would it be easier for someone to pull off the 'inspired' look with a 929/Millenia or with a ford contour/taurus? Sure they could do it with the cntour/taurus (for fun) with the correct stance and wheel fitment, but from an aerodynamic standpoint, the 929/Millenia already have something out there. While not 'traditional' those individuals can have fun.

Perhaps I have worded my statements wrong, and if that is the case, I apologize. I had simply figured that, with a market where a similar style is evident, it might be easier for someone to learn what VIP culture/ Vipstyling is about without having to purchase a new vehicle, only to realize that its not completely for them. While not 'VIP' in themselves, the owners could get a 'job well done' for what they tried to work with.

I love VIP but if for my own personal reasons cant get a chassis thats considered actual VIP, Im not gonna build my car around what other's feel is "acceptable" and VIP. Yes VIP has strict bloodlines but it shouldnt be so frowned upon to dip into the deep end and do something that's not exactly following the guidlines for building this type if car. Imho people need to start trying somedifferent tihngs to broaden what can be considered VIP or the diversity is gonna run very thin in the future. Don't get me wrong the OG VIP style will never get old to me I would just like to see it grow and evolve.

yup. its like civics and 240s... if you've seen one, you've seen them all. but there are people on the boards from my observation that are trying to break the mold, not by going all extreme, but by bringing luxury to a higher level without it bending the "guidelines" haha. all i want, is to be able to roll up, and some fools say... "dayaaaaaam that sh*t is gangsta" haha. :giggity:baller on a budget!!! but then again, in a sense, its not fair to roll true platforms and inspired rides in the same category. thats why they're inspired. let them be them, let us be us. haha. my y33 is inspiring to be a gangsta ass vehicle. but who am i... just another 240 guy gone to the VIP world as a noob.

Sorry, but I've never seen an 'inspired' B-chassis (B13/14/15) or P-chassis (P10/11/12). For the most part, the B chassis that I've always seen (US based and a few JDM models) always lend themselves towards the 'tuner'' style. The B12 might be able to pull off the 'inspired' look, but of that I have no knowledge of such. There's probably quite a few more cars that could be on the list but I'm rather ignorant of them.

After reading what you said, you are right in a sense. At the same time, taking a look once more at my two previous posts, I see that I keep trying to explain exactly what you have said but I keep using the word VIP. I think the wagonists on here may know what I'm trying to say. The Odyssey crowd and XB owners probably don't consider themselves VIP in the slightest- at least not on here. But their efforts, by using something that may have sentimental value or practicality for their currently lifestyle has transformed something 'average' into a real headtuner mixed with elegance. By taking a few of the VIP guidelines, they've breached the general stereotype of those vehicles and now people are more than willing to go out and purchase one just to do their own project. Same with a few Sentia owners. That is what I meant by 'acceptable'.

I suppose, its like that one thread which contained images of the 'Inspired' civic and everyone kept saying 'There's alot of effort into it, but its just a civic'. While pleasantly worked over, nobody would really think twice about doing one in the same style. But the XBs, Previas, Odysseys and 929s get a different reaction. There's a line of acceptance that seems to revolve around those, if an owner decides to do one under some of the guidelines.

You've said what I meant more elegantly than I did. While inspired, some of those won't cost an arm and a leg for custom work, which is what I was getting at. There is a better foundation for the 'inspired/styled' look than many other models out there. But I see what you mean. I need to brush up on my lingo so as not to make it appear as though I'm trying to tie them into the same category. That's why I'm a noob and why I'm here:smiley-rofl:

didn't read the whole thread but this is way too controversial a subject, especially for 101.

the point here(101) is to get a feel for the core values of vip. once you have a grasp on that a list is obsolete.

moral of the story: if you need a list you don't get it yet (keep researching), if you get it you don't need a list.

I guess I see it as this, the VIP platform consist of a select group of cars, if you don’t have one of these cars then it’s not a true vip platform, and shouldn’t be presented with being true VIP.

I’m not a expert on the culture, hence I don’t post much. I want to re-search and get an idea of the true culture and build from there. I don’t want to be a part of crossing non VIP platforms into the "TRUE VIP CULTURE", then in a few years it will all be mainstream and no one will have a clue where it all started from. It will be the "IT" thing to do, and vin diesel and johhny tran will be cruising down san Francisco in a smuggling geisha’s in " To Luxury to Bippu"......

well it is going to come to that point of popularity and you can't stop it. thats just how it is with trends.

you can read this and that on the net about "true vip" and platforms and whatnot but cop a couple vipcar mags and you will see all sorts of things that contradict what you read. if the goal is to mirror japanese vip then theres not too much you can't make an argument for based on whats been done over there.

more importantly is to just know what vip is about and apply it how you see fit. making a non-platform vip style list is about the only thing more ridiculous than saying "it has to be one of these 10 platforms".

Yea, that list is wrong...

The 929 is, infact, a VIP chassis. I feel the KA9 should be as well, but that's just me.

There's posts in the stickies already about this information. It's been discussed ad nauseam and i'm sure most people would rather not talk about it anymore.

How about we move on from this whole "what car is, aint and woulda been" and keep the style alive with big bodies done up right.
