mileage????

when buying a used luxury motor vehicle for example a y33 or ucf21, at what point of original miles is too many? as in not worth the purchase?

well there are obvious questions you would have to hope people answered honestly when asking them about their car for sale. Like were all scheduled maintenance visits met? are the majority of those miles from highway or city driving? furthermore the math is always roughly 12k per year like as if you were leasing, then adjust for that and see if your driving regiment will make those "extra"miles diminish after a few years and get it back to a reasonable amount. just a few tips! :biggthumpup:

I tend to stay under the 150k mark.....thats jus me tho. Cars these days will run forever if you treat them right. 
 
With that said, U should always budget an inspection when shopping for a 'new' car.  Theres an inspection service that I still use today that normally charges 75 per car. So I negotiate a [I]3 car deal [/I]for [B]$200[/B] up front =) 
 
Now its time to shop around for cars:dance:

 I find the 3 that I like and have them inspected.
 
Its not even worth talking about untill u know the results of their 'health exam' 
 
 
Negotiate*** (atleast) the cost of inspecting 3 cars, Gas and time to recoup your original losses.....

i agree with both the previous posts. unless you find a body and interior in great shape with high miles. in that case if the owner is selling for a really low price (due to mileage or mechanics) its not a bad idea, if you know how to work on cars. due to the lower cost you could rebuild the engine to like new specs or possibly upgrade, giving you a newer motor for the same cost as the car with lower miles.

mileage is not nearly as important as maintenance. all these these cars are good for 200k+ if treated right.
 
like dg said, ask for records and have it professionally inspected.
 
i personally look under the 120k mark, but even then it must be well taken care of.

All good points.  Negotiate hard!  You are not out to make a new friend, you're out to get the best deal you can. It amazes me how little people negotiate.  Always offer like 1k less than asking (even if it's only 5k!!!) and take it from there.

Never, ever try to rebuild an engine from a Q or LS, they're built to insanely high tolerances and you will never come close to the factory build quality. There are obviously people qualified who can do it but best to avoid that scenario.  You can probably find low mileages used engines, but the best thing is if you don't have to deal with that stuff in the first place.  

My Q mechanic who's an Infiniti senior tech told me they service a first gen Q at the dealer with over 500k on the original engine!!!  Had like 3 trannys but still got the original motor.

my 91 LS has over 150,xxx and runs like a champ...of course basic maintenance is needed...i think at 100,xxx miles water pump , timing belt , and colling system and trans fluid needs to be flushed?, correct me if im wrong someone..

so many good points made here. ive found a few vehicles that spark my intrest. a cima, a 98 celsior(which is possibly in negotiation with another seller but im awaiting intel), and a 1996 740i. so inspection records and hard negotiating is pretty much the key here. though i wont be able to touch the cars for a month in a half, i figured id do some early shopping around to weigh my options and see what's available etc.

You found a cima and a celsior in the states? That's a first.

Well what are your plans for the used car? You plan on just using it as a daily or dumping a ton of $ into it? If your answer is the expensive one then imho ide go with  finding a lower mileage car.

i go the opposite way...if its something i needed as a daily then i would look for low miles (reliability) but if it was a project theres things i would overlook.
