Red GS + Gold or Body colour DTX's -> Y or N?
Hey Guys,
I am constantly looking around for wheel designs i like & thinking/planning. I have a Vermillion Red 2GS.
I had pretty much decided on Trafficstar RTS in Black/Polish. i like the design as it is clean but also quite detailed so it doesnt look too 'cheap'.
However i started to think maybe a fuller wheel would be more 'VIP' looking considering i probably wont go overly aggressive on fitment + stance being a daily. So i have been looking at Trafficstar DTX.
I found that they do a few Disc Colour options, and the one that stood out to me was the Champagne Gold. My car is red with a very noticeable (in daylight) yellowy/gold metallic to it. So i think the Gold would work, but have never seen a car with them.
It seems as though Trafficstar can do custom colours too looking at their site, so i was otherwise considering seeing if they can paint the Discs in my car colour.
Just interested in opinions i guess, are Gold or body-colour faces just going too over the top with a big full wheel like the DTX? I dont mind being a bit 'over the top' VIP because i live in Perth in Australia and there are no other VIP Cars apart from a couple of old jap built & imported Celsiors, and the style hasnt really developed here at all. So i am pretty much blazing the trail in a way.
FYI - future mods are simply coilovers, Kazz grille, s/s pillars, chrome handles & boot bar, VIP exhaust system, maybe window visors, roof wing, and possibly an Aimgain or similar kit.
Also, is there any way of going 19 front and 20s rear and tucking rim whilst using coilies with mildly modded guards? i think im really going hard wanting to do that but what the hey, these rims arent cheap anyway so whats another few hundred $!
thanks for any input/pics if anyone has any!

ennh... just my opinion, but I think red would be way too much with that style of face.
Champagne gold would be the nicer of the two options imo, but still too much.
That's just how I feel about it.

Unless you plan to rep for McD's..I would say that's not the best choice. If you must do it then body color is your best bet. At least that's my opinion.

Agreed, and if you do 19s front and 20s rear you'll have to SLAM
the front to keep the distance of the fender arch to wheel rim
looking similar front to rear.
IMO, staggered wheel diameters only look good on Vipers, Corvettes,
and NSXs - they were designed for this, with smaller front wheel arches.
One other note is that some wheel designs look VERY different between
wheel diameters - a 19" would obviously have shorter spokes and/or "windows"
than the same wheel in 20".

elpresidente - haha good point on that. but it is very much a champagne moreso than a McD's 'gold'. the image is blocked for me here at work but i saved it at home so i will upload it tonight to this topic just to show you guys the colour.. but its got me thinking now haha
SoCal - hm i didnt think of that with the windows. the reason i thought of it is because i saw a car with 20" / 21" staggered DTX on a website (g-answer i think?) and thought it might be cool to tuck the rear 20 and flush the front 19.
appreciate the input guys, im kindof unsure about both now, but that is why i put it out there!
below is the wagon i was talking about with body colour DTX...

What do you think about the SSR Vienna LM-9? They come in champagne too.
I think they look so hot on that Crown.

i would just customize the black linnings of the rim and make it red... and maybe put red lug nuts. i wouldnt do the whole disc red.

chrispy - not really a fan of mesh on bigger cars, just my opinion !
//935GS400 - nice suggestion, red windows might give a litle extra punch but not be too intense.

yeah, i'd vote for red windows. especially w/ a dtx wheel. but u should just stick w/ your original idea and prove us wrong. :P

i like the gold idea better out of the 2. if you were to do color match i would say stick to color matched accents (windows, and if you're really brave lips).
but my best advice is don't go chasing the "vip look". do what you want to do and do it well. its all about execution. something that doesn't sound so cool can look great if done right.

thanks for all the input guys, ive had a few votes both ways plus the new red accent option!
gives me food for thought for sure...
here is the image of the Gold DTX. Looking at it at length together with the image of my car, i dont think it will work:
Here is another of the Estima with green on green DTX:
And my car just for interest...

Me being a big fan or the full faced wheel, i'd say go for it. However, i'm not too sure how the champagne would look with the chrome accents (unless you were pullin gold emblems). I say go for it cuz the colors compliment.

word...i was gonna say the same thing. the emlems would be the only issue with the gold face, but the chrome lip might bring it all together. i'd like to see it happen personally.

I am a HUGE fan of the Vienna LM-9 in Champagne Gold. It would definitely suit your car better than the DTX (in gold).
Regarding the 19-20 stagger, I'd advise against it, especially on the JZS16x body because the rear arch is already noticeably lower than the front, so even with no staggered diameters, the rear tucks quite a bit before the front. This would be even further accentuated with a 19-20 stagger and you'd end up with some crazy muscle car rake trying to even them out.

20s up front and 19s at the rear maybe? ;)

When you think of it that way, I agree. But then again, the guy with a 2GS on 19/20 Volk GT7s (can't remember his sn) does it quite nicely...

that would look weird bro. lol. volkgt7 runs a real stag set up. looked sweet too. theres a few vip cars in japan running the same 19, 20 set up on a GS and it looked sweet.

Well, i reckon the votes are in on the champagne gold so i think im going to do it. even if i dont like it, i could always get them polished later down the track. Now to sell my other car and get the money for them!
i did think about Gold emblems and accents, even getting the s/s pillars and chrome handles gold chromed before putting them on and buying a gold chrome boot handle. but then id need to chrome the grille when i get one, plus probably the window surrounds, and then even the body moulded chrome strips ... so i think it'll be a case of where to stop and itll go too far
i think i will need to look into the 19/20 thing some more, but yeah i dont want muscle car rake, or even muscle car 'tubbed' looking rear end with a huge wheel up back. so i might stick to 19s all round i think.
Cheers again all :)

oh and Firelizard - those wheels are really growing on me, but i have Work VS-XX in Gold on my current S13 with 5" dish front and 6" dish rear. so ive sortof played out the deep gold mesh rims and feel like a change on this car i guess

if i had to choose, i would do both... red on one side, gold on the other. and if anyone hates, its only cuz they didnt think of it first.. make it look like 2 different cars... i did it on my truck, i sprayed the spokes black on one side and left the other 2 chrome. everyone would tell me they was a truck, that looked EXACTLY like my truck but the rims were either chrome, or black w/ a chrome lip... no one really hated on the idea...
i saw it in one of the back issues of one of the VIP mags... it was a LS430. chrome DTX's on one side, and black DTX's on the other, looked sick... thats just my opinion... which ever you choose, DTX's alone would be sick...
