Installing air suspension
who here has installed air suspension themselves and can pass some advice and tips.
- How difficult was it for you in a scale of 1-10 (10 being the hardest)?
- how long did it take you?
- what would you say is the hardest part? what is the easiest?
- how many people would you suggest be needed to work on the install?
- would you recommend anyone to do it themselves?
brief story of your install and how it went:
What do you think of this kit? Anything good that stands out, any flaws, and anything i should add to it?
Air Suspension Kit
Digital Controller
thanks in advance.

- How difficult was it for you in a scale of 1-10 (10 being the hardest)?
I'd say a 7. It's not impossible, but to someone who doesn't know how to install suspension it could be really hard.
- how long did it take you?
Took me a day to build my trunk install, and another day to put everything in.
- what would you say is the hardest part? what is the easiest?
The actual suspension install is the hardest part. Running lines and wiring stuff isn't that bad.
- how many people would you suggest be needed to work on the install?
I did it myself with a friend. At least one more person would help a lot. Maybe two more.
- would you recommend anyone to do it themselves?
Yes, I've been quoted $800-$1000 for an installation. It's a lot cheaper to do it yourself. When you do it yourself, you learn it first hand and should be able to troubleshoot anything that goes wrong.
My tip is to build everything you can off the car first. Like, sound deadener, build up the trunk setup first, assemble bag and strut combo. This way, you minimize downtime. Then when you do the actual install it doesn't take as long. I highly recommend the Easy Street Auto Pilot management. There's only one wire to run to the trunk. It's very easy.

easy street is really easy. if you can swap out the suspension, you can easily wire and mount the hardware.

I have the easystreet kit for my front. They ride really good the only issue is that it does not lift as high as cylinders and it take more PSI to lift.

is it possible to mount the compressor and other trunk pieces somewhere other than the back of the trunk? IE against the left or right side or in the spare wheel cavity?
Im just thinking that I will eventually have baby stroller or something largish ill need to throw in the trunk.

Well, be sure to hard mount it..don't just haphazardly place things wherever. Vibration will cause them to come loose and could create more problems...in fact I'm almost sure it would.

sears has water traps, or lowes, or home depot....
hardest part for me, was trying to run the 1/2" air line... those things dont bend like you would imagine they would. then routing the electrical wiring was sort of a pain for me, finding ways to make it look clean, small passage ways to hide the wires.... other than that, everything else was a breeeeezzzzeeeee...

the air management system on my truck instead of using an electric compressor to pump air, mines uses an engine driven compressor to pump air. to lubricate it, it needs oil... and because of the design of this type of compressor, small amounts of oil gets pump im with air, so oil gets into the air lines, thats where the oil/water trap comes in to filter out the oil/water from the compressed air so it doesnt accumulate in the air lines, in the tank, and as well as the valves. but you dont have to worry about any of that since most go with electric compressors...

you can get 'air tool' water filters from sears or lowes for about $25 each. i suggest the craftsman filters because they have a 175psi rating versus others which are only rated at 150psi.

Well in the front, there not much room for, say a UAS size air bag. The upper arm and strut are really close together... you only options would be either an air cylinder, or a universal air strut kit from airlift company... you gotta build it to how u want it so that cool if u like to do that kind of stuff... for the rear, same issue, you might as well get your front and rear strut kits from airlift company or consider air cylinders...but the thing with air cylinders, the ride is very stiff, there's no shock. So u gotta run accumulators in line, it acts like a shock absorber, kinda... Just look into it, airlift company- easystreet, build your own air strut.....

omfg im so fucking tired write now i dont want to write an essay of how horrible my installation went...not to mention i didnt get it done. ill write again tomorrow, but basically
i installed everything then found i was missing the tank sensor, then i had to replace all strut springs back on, then drove out and forgot to lock in 1 wheel and it was making noise like crazy, but now my whole suspension sounds iffy, im sure i slaacked off so much putting this back on cuz i was so pissed i lost that sensor and had to redo the whole thing back....
and then on top of it, all the worst lil things happen in between.

yea pressure switch/tank sensor. its a digital kit so it has a sensor to read the tank pressure and tells the compressor when theres enough air.

Yea, air suspension install is a BITCH. Took me about 23 hours straight to install my UAS kit. I would have normally spaced out the time, but I needed the car to get to work since its my daily driver
If I had to do it all over again.... i would... but this time I know exactly what to do lol. A lot of time went into trial and error too since the instructions were fairly basic. Overall I'm still happy though =) If I would have had someone install it, i'd be out $1000 for labor, and I'd know nothing about the system...

Sorry to hear about your adventure and bad expriance on your first install and i think many go through what you just went through. you just have to live and learn.
Some advice if its your first time installing air.. learn as much as you can. stuffing everything in to one day and rushing will only take you longer and more likely make mistakes.
I seen many shop install air runer kit in one day 2 day tops.. but these guys prob been doing it for so long so they can do it with there eyes closed.. lol
I myself if a friend asks me to install i tell them if they can deal with me taking weeks than I'll help them out. i'm in no rush to install air in one day. I rather do it right once rather to have a friend come back to me in a day saying somethng went worng in which take more time to fix..
First make sure you have everything in your kit before you start. missing parts can be a bitch..
1. Take your time!! It can get fustrating when your pressed for time. Normally give your self at least 2 days min.
2 I know alot of people might not have a second car but if you have acess to one thats a plus!
3 Plan your install.. IF you dont have a second car, I would suggest you do the thing that will keep your car drivable. Just do one section day by day...
Day 1...Plot where all the tanks valves comp etc.. will go install if you have time and are up to it. "Except suspention parts"
Day 2...do all the wireing/electrical next (test run to see if everything is in working order before you go to the next step test switches to make sure the right vavles are working and make sure compressor turns on and off)
Day 3...Run all the hoses (if you have time you can do this step in day 2)(Also make sure you make hoses longer than normal so you have enough hose its easier to makae the hose short if its to long)
Day 4...Install all suspension parts and connect hoses (make sure hoses are not rubbing anything and if the hoses has move make sure it has enough play in it)
last step test system check for leaks..
Some tips
replace all those press in hose fittings with compression fittings.. working in the heavy truck industry those fitting are easy to use but dont last becuase there is a o ring inside of it that wears out.
Teflon tape works fine but I like to use combined with teflon tape is a paste type teflon made by Jomar Seal Industrial Thread sealant compound
FINE WINE TAKES TIME!
hope this helps

last step test system check for leaks..
Some tips
replace all those press in hose fittings with compression fittings.. working in the heavy truck industry those fitting are easy to use but dont last becuase there is a o ring inside of it that wears out.
Teflon tape works fine but I like to use combined with teflon tape is a paste type teflon made by Jomar Seal Industrial Thread sealant compound
FINE WINE TAKES TIME!
hope this helps

For those who are wondering what the diff is with the 2 fitting types here is a pic..
top fitting is the type that normally come with all air kits..
bottom fitting is a compression type.. Notice the threads and you have to screw it on.
Advantages with comperssion type is that when or if it ever goes bad you just cut the hose put the threaded sleave and bead on the hose and connect it again.. No need to buy a whole new fitting..
Also its best to invest a few more bucks for a hose cutter.. I beleive air runner kits comes with the cutter? using dikes will smash the hose when you cut it.. you want a straight clean cut for proper sealing..

yeah the air runner kit comes with the hose cutter....a must tool when cutting the lines....like he said using dikes will smash, bend and damage the end of the line causing it not to seal correctly....if you need a hose cutter you can pick one up from harbor freight for a couple bucks

IF your installing UAS bags.. dont over tighten fittings.. it will crack the plate where the fitting goes in.. here is an example..
Notice the hair line crack.. it seems like its leaking from the crimp but its not.. there is a crack..
Also notice the DOT stamp on the Fitting "Always use DOT Approved fittings and hoses" anything other than DOT appoved is not safe for the streets.

thanks for the advice man. just wish it woulda came sooner. lol
ill definately take all that into consideration for the rest of the install. for now, no leaks for 2 days so im a lil satisfied, although i still get really stressed just driving my car and stock height level.
what are the clips used to hold the air lines against the body called? i know it sticks on to the under body of the car via tape, then u clip your air line onto it.

i would go to home depot and buy some pipe clamp brackets....they go around the line and it has a hole on it where you can screw it into the body.

go to an auto parts store Napa has them. I seen than also at home depot where the wire loom is usally by where all the light bulb are. make sure if you get the metal clamps make sure there the ones with the plastic coating on it... if not they sell plastic ones there by the wire terminals and wires..
Dont use the plain metal ones becuase those will eventually cut into the hoses..

good advice. this all needs to be compiled into a informative thread someday.
anyone one with stories regarding running air lines close to exhaust pipes and mufflers? mine run about 2 inches above the y pipe.
any tips regarding chaffing and running lines against sharp edges? any tips on which materials to use.

Oh i get one storie about lines running close or right under the exh and in the middle of the desert.. lucky i was there on Vac with the SE crew because no one knew how to fix it in the middle of no where..
IF your running hoses through the body of the car.. you can use fitting called Bulkhead fittings. in which is a fitting that goes through the body and its a fitting that secured to the body and hose attach to it.. this allows the hose to pass through the body with out having to worry about the hose getting cut..
I used these in my car..
In this pic you can go extreme show and use these type of bulkhead fitting and are anodized blue and bend stainless steal lines.. you can also use stainless lines like in this on for show and also it this is where the exh muffler would go.. so no chance of melting a line..
http://groups.msn.com/_Secure/0SAAYA3kV3A!kIyCTUn1kvXTNHpjcbT*bdq1d6q1ZYf2M3sJoKHBdL6IpnfSUjBPLrMFUwLN3itVbqsHcx0!sCqe37WOHiJFAn5QyTNS*2bEzAAAAynJtAg/SSTubing02.jpg
I would try to mount route hoses as far away from exh as possible.. even if you have to loop it and use more line..
For sharp edges some thing syou can do is get rubber fuel line and put it over where the sharp edges are of if you have some wire loom that works as well also..

it goes a little more, i just didnt want to dump all the air out of the struts.
i went to an autoshop yesterday taht did installs, and the guy looks at my strut and says. "come here i wanna show you something" he walks me over to a set of easy streets, and the same bags i had blew out at the top. scared the shit outta me. he said it was only on 3 weeks and it was just parked, didnt even mess with it or anything.

im not saying its bad, its just the guy there told me what happen to a set he was installing after 3 weeks of just sitting.
i hope its good, and all the stories ive heard so far its good.
trunk is crap now, but im waiting to run the front lines. then ill do up the whole trunk. nothing special. just an enclosure with acrylic glass.

what size airlines do you guys use?
i was given 1/2 by default and didnt know anything then. now that i know, i hate them.
the pressure fluctuate so drastically everytime i barely touch it. it jumps up and down by like 15 PSI. and the car just pops up and down.
i want a smooth drop, but not too slow. do you guys think 1/4 will do the job? any disadvantages?
is ok if i run 1/2 lines from the tank to the solenoids, and then 1/4 from the solenoids to the strut? or should i just replace it all?

I love the 1/2" lines. Well I want it to pop though.
Do you have the 1/2" dump valves? You can just put an 1/4" adapter and it will lower smooth and steady. This is how mine is setup.
You have any pics of the parts your using?

I've seen these 2 types of valves.
If you have FBSS you should be running 2 valves per bag. Total of 8. 1 to shoot air to the bag and 1 release the air.
I have the first type. Either way I guess you can just put an adapter for a smaller fitting allowing you to dump ur car at a slower rate on the dump/exit/exhaust valve. Whatever you want to call it.

do you have AIM by any chance? i have the valves at bottom of ur post.
can u show me what i need and how it works? can i still stick with my 1/2 lines or do i need to swtich all the fittings and such?

you can get those valves that can adjust the speed of going up or down.
its basically "inline" with your air lines...so you can keep your 1/2" air hoses, and then just control the valve...
You can get these to slow the speed down

so does this replace the fittings on the valves side?

Well, the one with the link is a muffler fitting. Meaning it muffles the PSSH sound. It also slows down the speed. It connects to the exhaust port on your valve.
If you want to adjust it, you get the ones that is able to adjust it, and fit that to the exhaust port of the valve and adjust accordingly.

TO big 1/2 inch lines.. it hits up fast! and those lines dont bend well.. to think and stiff.. to make a bend you end up using more line than anything becuase it only flexes so much unlike a thinner line which is more flexable
depending how fast you want it to go.. 1/4 will go slow and smooth and youllprob have to hold the swtich longer to get it up..
3/8 hit up pretty decent not to fast not to slow going up.. to slow this down to what you want you can use throttle vavles and they also sell for the down motion exh mufflers that you can adj the amount of air comming out..
from the tank to valves you can keep the 1/2 or go smaller.. better to keep all the lines one size..
feel free to hit me up on AIM.. eight08bids

hey guys,
I finally got around to re install my trunk set up for my compressors and air tank but after moving them around I totally forgot how to reconnect the wires. Here's a picture of how i connected it back together.. everything works out but it doesn't automatically shut off anymore when I take the keys out of the ignition. Did I install it wrong? or is it another problem?
I'm a big noob with air suspension so help me out here please!
sorry for the ghetto diagram I made on MS Paint..... :pat:
I don't know if I left anything out in the picture since my ride is back in the shop and I can't look at it right now but I'm pretty sure this is how it's setup.

wire the power lines to an accessory fuse. usually the same one as the radio is on.
it should say ACC.
this will cause your compressors to turn off whenever the car is not on the "on"
position.
hope that works. i know some people straight wire it to the battery, but thats how i did it and it works.

anyone know how much these silence the exhaust by, and how much it slows it down?
i fluctuate about anywhere from 10-20 PSI each time i quick press the buttons. im aiming for 5.
anyone think this is sufficient.

it doesnt turn off when you turn off when your car off becuase you have to wire the trigger wire to the relay to the Acc. wire on the Ignition switch..
The swtiches you want to have powered all the time so you dont have to always turn on you ign switch every time you want to use your air..
here is also my preff of the pressure swtich wireing..
If you look at my pic.. i have it to gorund.. becuase you have less wires running back into the car.. the relay ground wire you run to the pressure switch. so the swtich breaks the ground cuasing the pump to turn off. i rather have less wires especially hot wires running all over.
Also if your running a water trap.. and using the Vair comperssors... make sure to add a check valve after the water trap normally just mount it to the tank.. the reason is many time these water traps tend to leak air.. and is your just using the check valve thats on the hose from the compressor, if you have a leak in the trap the air will come out of the tank.. adding the extra check vavle prevents this..

I don't know if I left anything out in the picture since my ride is back in the shop and I can't look at it right now but I'm pretty sure this is how it's setup.
TIA
it doesnt turn off when you turn off when your car off becuase you have to wire the trigger wire to the relay to the Acc. wire on the Ignition switch..
Also if your running a water trap.. and using the Vair comperssors... make sure to add a check valve after the water trap normally just mount it to the tank.. the reason is many time these water traps tend to leak air.. and is your just using the check valve thats on the hose from the compressor, if you have a leak in the trap the air will come out of the tank.. adding the extra check vavle prevents this..

anyone know how much these silence the exhaust by, and how much it slows it down?
i fluctuate about anywhere from 10-20 PSI each time i quick press the buttons. im aiming for 5.
anyone think this is sufficient.
you can barely here it with the mufflers.. this will help what your trying ot do..

everyone is getting so creative on this artpad shit. lol.
i dont know why my rear right valves pump more than my left.
like itll be 2-5 more PSI everytime. its weird.

what guage are you using..
its very hard to really get the same pressure
are you running a FB set up or FBSS..

Also, your sending units may be off. You may need to have them calibrated. 2-5 is not that much difference though.

FBSS. im using digital gauges.
2-5 is not bad, but remember if i want to adjust it, it jumps by 10-20.
i guess it wont be bad once i get the muffler/ slow down valves here.

its finished and most of the headache is gone. still got lil problems regarding the air system and the air in it. but will probably have to call in.
sometimes ill pump to 150PSI and itll still be low, and then i drop the pressure, and it goes to like 0, but it doesnt move. i have to mess around with the others then, itll get back to the right pressure height. its weird.
not sure why, but my rears clunk at like 20PSI or less when i drop it. not sure what is making that sound or what it could be hitting. also does any here have loud strut noise?
ill have a pic of threads later. friend is getting new camera, but here she is after a month of headache and stress.

after a good night of drinkin to relieve the stress. i can tell the story. lol. my shitty car works entertain u guys huh? =]
ok so we had set up a cruise to san pedro, CA. for those that arent familiar this was our cruise route and scenery.
cruise along the ocean side towards a park on a cliff taht has a huge view of the earths curve. its sick. we were to go through 2 bridges that take you over the san pedro harbor. its a sick ass place.
towards the top of the first bridge i notice my PSI starting to drop and i hit the switch, it jumps up and lets back down again. about 20 psi a second. this is a very narrow bridge with construction on it which led to a single lane road. my front right collapsed and my tire was compleletly rubbing on the fender and sittin on bumper too. but good thing there was construction area so i pulled into the closed lane safely. my friends went didnt know and went ahead, then i later called them and it looked like a big scene with like 5 cars in a contruction pull over zone. helicopter was flying overhead and circling us too.
so after they came back i got mini jack and as i lifted it up at 3/4 of the way, the jack started slanting and bending. the car was on a downward slope, a big one too and we couldnt continue to lift it and have me work cuz it could have collapsed on my arm at any time.
it was getting dark and dusk was setting in. we found another spot to pull over at the bottom of the bridge where the land was more even. before i did that i had to request the cal trans to stop the flow of traffic for a minute so i can pull out and slowly get to the new area. remember i cant turn the wheel too much, but i cant keep it straight either. turning too much would pull out the fender and when i kepted it straight it would hella rub. so i had to zig zag.
got down safely then cops came, he was cool about it, he told everyone else they had to go to clear the area. he stayed there with me until me and my friends finished.
GOOD THING i had extra lines in the car, extra 25 foot. turns out the tire hit the lines and had burned it. i got the car back up and pressure was holding perfectly fine. i was scared it wouldnt since i didnt have a line cutter and the edges werent exactly straight.
i was so nervous the whole time that it would happen again, but now it know its because i dropped the car to low and my shocks were toooo soft, when i hit a hard bump on the bridge it hit the line and burnt it out.
got advice to get rubber hosing and use it as a protective layer. doing that today!

Wow, something bad was a simple fix. Thanks for the tip on me keeping extra airlines/cutter in the trunk. Good to know it wasnt the bags itself.
Did I read somewhere that you did the install yourself?

i would not say a good job because there is no pics of his set up in this entire thread.
i would say give him effort for trying, but if the tire rub the line then it is not a good job.

i keep extra female to female fittings in my car along with the cutter. if i get a bad spot in line cut it out and push the lines into the female connector to make it home.

also did you ever get the exhaust mufflers. i have them on mine and i love them you cant hear the aggrivating sounds of the air. and it can slow it down alot the only thing that sucks is you have to adjust it so it will drop evenly

or was that somewhere else....well the good thing is that you knew how to fix it so in cases like that you can fix it.

A suggestion here guys, one important thing to note for those that's on airs. Make sure the car is still driveable on full slam (inner fender work).

whats the lowest psi u guys can go and still drive like 40-50?
as for emergency kit i would definately have atleast 20 foot of line and couplers. the couplers would kill the time by an hour easily. a
FRESH - i never got the mufflers. when i switched from 1/2 lines to 1/4 lines i have had very lil exhaust noise. still some sound but i think i like that lil pshhh.
as for the install. the first time i did it myself but lost a sensor so i had to redo everything. the 2nd time around i had a great moderator here offer his sunday to me.

Damm what a storie!! I been on that brdige a few times..
one of the most important things is make sure that hose isnt resting or really close to exh pipes and make sure the hoses are not rubbing close to the tires axles or anything that will pinch the lines.. and if the lines have to go through the body of the car.. I would highly sugest the use of bulk head fittings.. if not make sure you insulate the lines good so that the sheet metal dont eventually cut the lines..
Glad you had some extra line in your car..
I once had to doa repair in a freinds car in the middle of the desert goingto Vegas once and he had no extra lines and his line went because of crappy installers running the line right under the exh pipe..
But you learn from mistakes..

so how did u do the repair without the extra line?
im buying some braided vinly hose this weekend. i plan to use it in the area exposed to the control arms, tires, and where it touches metal.
im also going to screw clamps into the wheel well as well. i just wished i could do this all on a car lift. it would take like 10 minutes.

lucky he had a female to female connector.. and cut the burn section out and lucky he had just enough slack on the lines to connect it back than I wrapped the hose that was still under teh exh pipe with a shirt... lucky he made it to vegas.. where we could do a better fix after finding some hose so could re route the hose..

To the OP, so how are those easystreet sruts so far?? Any problems?? I was thinking of using those on my van.. I am in the process of piecing everything together..
I'm just doing research to see what is the most affordable and reliable way of setting it up..So far, this is what I was thinking of getting:
1 viair 480 compressor
1 2 gal tank
1 8 way mainfold valve setup
2 front easystreet struts
Just trying to figure out what bags to run in the rear and how to mount them..All plumbed with 1/4 lines..I was going to originally just bag the rear since I use the van to carry my music and video gear but might as well to the fronts also..The challenge also is to mount everyting outside of the vehicle..With all my gear loaded, I won't have any space to spare..
If anyone else got other suggestions, I would really appreciate it..
Sorry for the thread jack..
