Hawaii Info?

Hey my fiance (she will be wife when we move) and I are movin out the islands in a little under 2 months.  We love it out there and got engaged on Maui.  We have been doin some heavy research as to what island to live on and places to live, work, etc.  I know that some heavy hitters on here live out there so can anyone give me some advise on what the best places to live are or anything really.  Also we are 23 so we aren't to live in the retired citizen's area.  Basicly, school me on Hawaii!  Thanks!

Without really knowing you it's hard to see what island would be best for you. 
Also the job market is highly competitive. SO do you have degrees or any other special skills? 
Basically Oahu is the most city like and the rest just get more country like from there. 
I personally grew up on Oahu and I loved it there. 
In my view it has the most opportunities, job wise out of all the islands. 
Maui would be the next and then the Big Island. 
Kauai is the most country out of the major islands. 
I would put it in the same category as Molokai and Lanai. 
But what it all comes down to is what your looking for and that is hard without knowing you.
Just be prepared when you go for anything and if it's possible I suggest you visit all the islands that you are thinking about and just take a drive around away from the tourist area and actually see what it's really like to live there.
But in General I think Oahu would be your best bet to start out.

Hahaha...we're trading places, we're moving to St. Louis in 2 months.  We live on Oahu and it's probably the best place to find a job..what do you guys do?  That might help us, to help you, make a better choice. (I'm over in Makena on Maui right now though for some R&R)

We both have degrees in business marketing but i also have background classes in fashion design and graphic design.  we've been out of school for a little over a year so we aren't specialized to anything yet. We like good jobs and money, but love the more "country" area's of the islands but we need to make money to live and get toys.
St Louis huh? One of my good friends parents moved there.  I've visited with him and its super nice.  Just an awsome city.

What island do you want to move to?
 
i live on oahu.. that where pretty much everything happends and is located.. you can find every job here you can think of.. just have to be lucky
 
Mauis in between.. but can get pretty boring at times.. but its only a 30 min flight to honolulu. Maui prob i would say has more jobs in the visitor industry becuase its more of a toursit desination.. 
 
The car scene on maui is prob up to par with honolulu.. but the VIP style there hasnt really gotten as popular on maui yet.. 
 
Dont know about jobs in Hawaii right now.. people just loosing there job left and right.. 
 
For a local that was born and raised in Hawaii.. my first choice to live would be honoulu than Maui.. than Kauai than big island.. 
 
I love going to maui to just relax and hang out with freinds.. Im there alomost every other month becuase I get free trips "Best thing about working for the airlines."

I think that it is safe to say that you are most likely to find more employment opportunities on the island of Oahu.  What ever island that you do chose I hope that you enjoy your stay here in the Hawaiian Islands.

Thanks for all the quick replies so far!  It seems like Oahu defenetly has the most job oppurtunities.  Now I know the island is pretty small, but are there any bad places to live?  Like in Columbus, Ohio there are all kinds of amazing houses right on the fringe of bad areas. It 's like if you go down one street you're fine, but the one right next to it, not so much.  We would not live in Honolulu so what are some good places to live?  For 23 year olds with access to lots of stuff? (and obviously that we can afford)

That all depends on your budget.  What can you afford to pay for rent/bills?  Then we can tell you places that fit what you want better.

We want to pay under 2k for rent and bills.  It would be better to stay around 1500ish.  We have been looking online for available places but it hasn't been too easy to find information.

just no go waimanalo, wainaie, bad parts of Kalihi and waipahu... lots of rentals in the area i live in salt lake in which is right up the street from the airport and 5 min away from town. there lots of place right in town that are good.. but like all places theifs always will lurk into a good neiborhod
 
you can find a decent place to rent for under 2k 
 
IF you wana go farher out of town like waipio, waikilie, ewa, Kapolie, pearlcity, aiea mililani .. trafic sux in the AM.. and trafiic get pretty bad comming from thos areas in Honolulu

sweeet!  that's a good call about traffic.  In Columbus, traffic is worst in the morning but nothing like major west coast traffic.  I would assume it's the same horrible California style there.  I will def check out the paper.  Thanks for the awsome link.

im sure you'll enjoy living in kihei/wailea here on Maui.. there are homes for rent at that price.. great looking ones too.  near the beach or highway.. sunsets in kihei are great as you may know.. it's not far from town/airport.. so shopping needs are easy.. whatever you decide, enjoy your stay here and im sure your move will be the right decision..   -josh
