WELLFORD, S.C. -- A Blacksburg man is in jail after authorities say he stole a bear cub from an animal park and then charged people $1 to pet it.The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports 31-year-old John Chadwick Montgomery was charged yesterday with third-degree burglary and grand larceny.
Authorities say he lured the 7-month-old cub from the Hollywild Animal Park in Inman on Saturday night. Workers say Montgomery planned to take a monkey from the park but chose the bear after another monkey attacked him.
Authorities say he took the bear to a truck stop and charged people $1 each to touch the animal. The bear was returned to the park unharmed.
