True lip size

I always hear people mention how big their lips are and after giving the wheel specs, it doesnt make any sence. True lip is messured from the furtest point of the face of the wheel. Its considered true lip because when the wheel is spinning, you only see that much of the lip in motion. People often messure lip size between spokes. If its really a 6" lip, then you should be able to rest a 6 pack on it. :runcoold:

I actually didnt make that up LOL. There was a thread about it back in the day but im just bringing it up because some of the newbs only care about lip and I just want to educate them on what true lip size is so they can see that lip size isnt the most important thing. Some wheels with 3" true lip and a flat face look better then others with tons of fake lip.

havnt posted in a while but I think that def of true lip is where the face meets the lip. not where the bolts meet the lips.

DUB Style is a perfect example of facke lips. I see cars all day where it looks like they have 2.5-3 inches of lip but the face is convex and when looking at the side of wheel from a rear angle you can see the face spining close to the outer barel of the wheel.

That is more along the lines of false lip.

let's talk fact rather than opinion.

Forum image

notice how the face of the front wheel extends beyond the lip of the rim? that would mean it has negative lip per agi and rich's definition. since that is physically not possible the definition is null and void.

an accepted definition of lip is "a projecting edge" and in order to measure said projection you must start from the base, e.g. mounting location of the wheel face to outer barrel.

if you want to let noobs know that lip isn't everything that's cool, but lets not make up baseless rules to justify our feelings. it will only cause confusion in the long run.

if you want to call it "perceivable lip" then that's cool too, but "true lip" is far from "true".

First off, I agree with Agi. Second, for those who prefer not to have 70% of their lips inside of the face of the wheel, they can measure it like you do with backspacing.
https://www.rsracing.com/tech-wheel.html#wheeltrm

cardboard, laid along the face of the wheel, then measure to get an accurate measurement of how much lip there is from the face-> outter rim.

Hahaha...life is funny!

But for real. Pseudo-lip / perceived lip / fake lip / DSL ...ok, I just threw that one in for fun..but yah, to me those are all kind of different. Reverse in spokes like RaCinStylez posted to me are not a measure of true lip..the extent of the spokes is dramatic. Sure, they're great for big brakes, but so were my VS-KF's..and they cleared my 6 piston AP's no problem..but they weren't protruding so far that the lip was only visible between the spokes. So there's actually a fine line I suppose. My VS-KF's were 10.5 -19 and gave about 6" of dish. You could see the whole dish no matter where the spokes were..so to me that was true lip. The sizing and offsets make sense as well in what the outcome of dish size would be..so that to me is more how you measure it...but there's exceptions. The Leon Vetru's I just put on my customers W211 E55 were 10 +21 which by numbers would equate to about 4" of dish...but due to the edge of the face design it only gave about 2.5" of dish. So word from the wise...if you want max dish, don't buy the Vertu's. The face covers a good 1.5" of the actual dish (you can see it in the space between the dish and face edge). My Waffe's, well, that's true dish..it's a concave full faced wheel..opposite of the crab-spoked fakies.

yeah its a tough one, but i can see what you mean with true lip. theres heaps of rims out here in Aus advertised as 'deep dish' but they seriously have about 1" of dish if you discount the protruding face.

i think it just comes down to newbs to wheels being aware that cheaper wheels trying to be deep dish are never going to cut it, you need to get true 2 or 3 peice wheels to acheive dish, but then again it depends on spoke and wheel design.

i think its just a fair point to consider when looking for wheels just have a think about it and consider if the wheel will actually accentuate the whole dish size it claims to have.

my old VS-XX had 5.5" dish front and 6" rear, but a little bit of it was covered by the spokes, not that much though cause they were mid front and low rear disc, but since they were gold with black bolts and the dish was super shiny it reflected on to the dish and make it look smaller!

I measured My Leons and the rears were around 5'' because i can put a cd in it, but since they didn't offer me custom offsets I had to go with the lowest size to fit them on my ride.. but it's standard disk which makes the face stick out more and curve out..giving me a small lip when they're rolling...

I also heard about switching out barrels if you have 3 peice wheels to have a bigger lip..??? any info on this

Call it what you want, the name isnt important. . . the message is.

For the record, I am not hating. In fact, I love the Fabulous Expands even though they give off some fake lip. Some wheel styles can pull it off.

step lip throws it a bit too. i think if you dont have that much dish step lip is better because it sortof breaks up the dish so your eye cant focus so much, whereas if you just had like 2" of straight lip there it wouldnt look much but with a step in it it sortof gives it a bit of 'interest' so it doesnt matter if isnt so dished .. But my point is in general it again throws off the lip size :P

I've been on both sides of the barrel. The Racing Hart J5/J8 is good example of a wheel design giving more perceived lip without lowering the offset.

On a side note its hard to clean wheels with "fake lip" Dirt, brake dust likes to build up and its hard to get in between the lip and the spokes with a wash mit.

Racing Hart J5 19x8 +45. Zero lip?? Or 2.5" lip?

Forum image

AME Shallen LX 19x9 +42 Hi disc. 3" lip but you can see the face is almost flush with the flange.

Forum image

AME Shallen LX 19x10 +43 Slo 4" lip

Most Weds Kranze wheels do not provide a lot of lip compared to other brands. The Rapier is an exception because of the wheel design. The face is almost flush with the rivets. 19x8.5 +28 SLo 3.5" lip!

anybody calls my lips "fake" or "cheater" i'mma hit em in the head with that mf. then they might call me a cheater since they didn't get a fair fight, but i guarantee they won't call the lip fake. real as the big a** bump on yo head.

anyways, i think we can all agree that as long as it is a quality wheel and well executed names really don't matter. i just think that calling it "fake" or "cheater" is trying to condescend when it could be just as nice or nicer than a deep disher.

Rounded or rolled edge. This works best when the lips are not high polished IMO.

slightly cheater lip, but then again, its still 5" not including .5" not a big fan of massive tsw cheater lips.
racinstylesz, see your lip, look at the lip of my weds, theyre slightly different. yours are rounded and boxed, where mine just completely drops off. personally dont really like the drop off/ended edges. but i had to have this freakin wheel.

yeah. cant wait til this one is finished. but now, im going to have to wait. unfortunately no more funds to finish for HIN AZ coming up, and full kit should be here any minute now. but yeah, these have a slight cheater lip, but the low offsets make up for the rest. wink wink.

I'm saying this only once to the two parties involved.... take it further and I will hand out bans quicker than you'll run out of lip fake or real. Keep it civilized or learn how the forum is going to move on without you immediately.

i dont quite follow where this topic has gone as such. i dont think its fair to say people have 'cheated' by getting rims with not as much lip due to the face.

i thought the point was just to make people aware that just because it may say '4" lip' then that doesnt automatically mean it has 4" of bare metal lip clearing the wheel face. So that is to say, dont just try to go for the most lip measurement when comparing wheels that are different makes and designs because you may end up with not as much "true lip" (for lack of another term) as you had expected.

That isnt to say wheels that have some lip covered by spoke are crap, unless they truly are crappy wheels *trying* to fake it e.g. those TSWs in my opinion...

i dont get why it's such a big effing deal. if you got 12200000 inches of lip and it looks like crap, who cares. if you got 1 inch of shiny polished metal and it looks like you can drive keira knightley around in it, you're less accomplished cause you cant brag to the other 3 year olds about how big your lip is?
