adverse affects of 87 octane in a ucf10?
I tried unsuccesful attempts at searching this forum on this topic, so here it goes:
With the soaring rate of fuel due to BS reasons involving a hurricane (sorry, don't want to go into polotics), I actually toyed with the idea of running 87 octane fuel in the ucf10 when I start to drive it. I know I did this in my A8 once and ALL KINDS of lights showed up on the dash and I had to take it to the dealer for service.
Different vehicle, different country of manufacture. So, just wondering if anyone had experince with this vehicle and what the result was...

I pumped regular in my ucf20 today. No gas in Houston after Ike and that was all they had. Hope I dont fuck it up, atleast I added an octane booster lol

the car wont run nearly as well, big power losses, and youll want to clean your injectors often. The car runs better off premium and youll actually get better mileage with 91, so just do as the recommend.

higher octane (91)burns slower and cooler, so when u run lower octane(87), it burns faster and more hot.... your motor then is gonna detonate (pre ignite) due to the fact that it got so hot that it self ignites... have overheating problems, blown head gaskets, engine knocks, lack of power, etc... i've witness lots of problems with people running 87 instead of 91....
but its all good, keeps us mechanics busy when they break down...

When I run 87 in my 1GS, my CEL comes on and the car sputters and runs like shit. I've heard of people running 87 for a short while with come octane booster and those fuel additives and were fine for the time being.
how much are the prices over there. usually there is about a 20 cent difference between 87/91 so if you fill up a whole tank you'll only be saving like 2 bucks?

wow you guys only get 91? I put 93 in the Q up here
Knoxville is out of gas too so idk what I'm gonna do in a couple days, I'm down to a half tank!

Octane Booster
I Use 1 Octane Booster (In My Boosted Silvia/240sx)with every Fill Up. First I Pour In Octane Booster then I Fill Tank so there is a Mixture, I Don't Use Cheap Octane Boosters(Wynns) Like You Find at Gas Stations I Go To Pep Boys Or Auto Zone for a Pack. Also Check the Rating on the Octane Booster Cause Some are 110. I Believe This Can Cause More Damage in a N/A Lexus than using 87.

True, true. Not worth the risk when you calculate in those terms...

I ran 87 a few times in mine. It didnt sputter or anything really serious, but the power loss is very noticeable especially with highway passing. I didnt notice a loss in MPG though.

i've used 87 in my camry v6 and sc400 a couple times. then again, i also added a bottle of chevron fuel system cleaner.

If i'm runnin low on gas and funds, i'll ride my bicycle before i put anything under premium in my car. That or i'll just work harder to make ends.

flexinsteels is right here, octane rating is simply its resistance to detonation. but with our cars the knock sensors sense the detonation and will retard timing until it stops, therefore running lower octane fuel will result in poor performnce and poor fuel economy, so that money thats being saved filling up is actually costing you w/ more frequent fill ups. (not saying u guys are using low octane to save money) this just comes w/ having high compression engines.

I was thinking about doing that from now on with 91.

No Octane Booster For N/A
I Dont Think Using an Octane Booster for a N/A v8 Lexus would be a Good Idea.... :pat:
May Cause more Damage than 87 cause the Octane Rating will be Further from 91.

QFT.
Octane rating is simply its resistance to detonation.
Lower octane means it will detonate at a lower threshold. If your engine specifies 91 or 93 and you use 87, it will detonate before the piston has reached its maximum compression, resulting in counter-active power.
In the short term, I don't think it will result in any damage or reliability issues, but I would not do it.
Someone's put regular in my bimmer before, and the power loss was apparent.

my one cheap friend has had a ucf10 for 5 years and only puts 87 in it. he had to replace the trans and all the belts n pumps before 100k, but that doesnt have to do with the lower octane. im still surprised he didnt get fouled plugs or bad piston rings or something yet, cause he doesnt use any additives or cleaners either. i still only fill 91+ though

I was driving the ls400 and checked to see what my avg. mpg the tank was getting on 87 and it said 14.8 LOL!
