I want out of VIP 101...

Alright so many requests... please post up in this section if you're new and want to hear our opinions. I just don't graduate anyone for the hell of it especially if you just joined in the last few days. It doesn't come that easy. Spend time in here and ask [I]good[/I] questions. There are exceptions to this rule that I am just implementing now. As long as one of our staff members can vouch for you personally, then I will graduate you. Have the VSC staff member private message your username and I will take care of it. 

And, if you have been on this forum as a VIP-In-Training member for a couple months now, send me a PM so I can review your account. 
 
Also, any [I]constructive[/I] feedback on the VIP 101 section is always welcomed. Thank you.

i do think its kind of silly.. i partake in a few other forums, rx7club, zilvia.net etc.

Some of the threads/activity here is kind of slow... The need to register to view forums, and pass the 101 section will be discouraging to alot of good potential posters.  Ive tried to link a few threads to a few buddies of mine who are interested in getting into 4 door styling and they cant view threads and are just too lazy to register.

There are some forums that you have to be voted in to participate *not sure if you guys are familiar with ziptied.com, a drift forum, i used to be a forum member til some guys suggested i be banned because they never seen me drift my car (most of that forum was made up of cocky drifter nazis anyways ) even tho i contributed alot to that forum.

I see alot of cool build up threads on this forum, and i would like to leave my feedback or suggestions in those threads, but i can not post.

Mike Ill put in a vote to pass this guy, he's stuck around since june.  lets give him the benefit of the doubt. :bigok:

btw the system is great for weeding out the wannabes, thats why its in place.

i honestly thing its a great system. my clueless car friend actually learned a lot from being stuck in VIP and just reading. he surprised me with the amount of information he learned.

it really does help implement noobies from just posting random crap of things they can learn reading. im all for it and i think its a great idea.

I don't think he created this thread so newbs can ask to be upgraded. Most of us newbs can't contribute to any of the other categories anyways besides maybe a" your car looks sick" or " when i get my car I want it to look like this" or the countless number of useless threads someone could create. So i think unless a mod can vouch or when he see's your name  he automatically thinks to himself that  you can contribute in a constructive  way, but until then we should sit our noobie butts in 101 and be happy and learn or go mod your own forum.

Before January '08, we had more arguing and complaints than any forum imaginable. We might as well have been the Thespian For Life Forum because this ish was drama 24/7. We figured out through the process of elimination that the contributing factor to the majority of the problems was the new people on the forum reading nothing and talking like they knew everything. Misinformation was on the rise and some of our original members that could easily have help mold this community for the better left. So we shut the site down for a month and cleaned house. We setup this section "VIP101" for the new people to be able to ask questions while being forced to READ the other threads and learn. The postwh0ring also stopped when this was implemented, as well as the flaming of new people, which was another big problem. 
 
So we sat back and watched and guess what? it worked. But now we had another major issue... we had so many members and only a few people on staff that were overwhelmed. So we brought on a large amount of trusted and respected people to help, and I must admit... we have the best staff ever, as an Admin I couldn't ask for more! :biggthumpup: they are all very good at what they do and they make my job easier.
 
So what does this have to do with you? well I believe this should give you some insight as to what your job should be here on this site. You should focus on trying to help build this community by contributing where you can VIP101, this above all else makes you worthy of promotion faster than anything else. We see people that are more interested in their fellow members and we know they are part of the family instantly. But be careful not to fake the funk... that's how battleships get sunk! :thelaw: hahahahaha 
 
In other words don't make it your mission to get promoted, make it your mission to become a part of the family and the rest will fall into place faster than you can say "Hi my name is [INSERT NAME HERE], and I love VIP"
 
We are looking at promoting a good amount of you guys in the next few weeks so just keep doing what you do and if it was right you will see out of this place posting-wise soon enough! :dance:

I have been a member to many other forums in the past and I like the way the ''101'' section is setup to keep all of the "Is my car VIP", "Is this VIP" out of the other threads. It weeds out a lot of crap from all sections and makes them informative. I know I dont have a standard VIP platform but I enjoy this site more than any other out there. I have years of experience in paint and body but I do not demand to be a member. When I get my CTS further along and post pics of the clean build I hope to be accepted to this site. Good job on keeping this site clean!

I agree with these ^ posts. While it would be nice to be able to post outside 101 and say "Your car is sick!" or "wicked ride man, I can see you put a lot of hard work into it," that's really all a 101 member can say unless they have previous knowledge. I've never seen a forum with a membership tier like this before. 

With that said, I understand why this method is in place and I support it. It really makes the "noobs" learn about the VIP style (or hell...anything for that matter) before they can go post willy-nilly all over the forum.

I like how this forum screens post hores and keeps the useless posts in check.
I know there are other forums that have 1 thread and 2 replies on where to look.  Then it never gets deleted.  Thats a pointless thread and wastes bulletin space.  
 
The ones that are in here and go beyond VIP101 are true enthusiast and want to learn more.

I think 101 is important, it eliminates a lot of the dumb questions but also is a very good place to learn things. I had to go through 101 and i believe it help me a lot with the do's and dont's to vip mods. for those who just wanna look around why does it matter whether your a member or not? its simple and it tells you what to do to get out of the 101 section, follow instructions and then you can get out......:slap:

101 is important. There's a lot of new members and I've noticed that the 101 section is the most active on the forum which is good. If you really had something that you felt could help the poster in another section a simple PM would do just fine. All the sub categories are being used in 101 and it seems the overall community knows what's going on. Most threads are being answered by newer members, which means people are learning and the mods can sit and watch and be happy.

i know what you mean. they do help build a good vip community on my forum board. you can probably tell since you go there too. the thing is they are all humble and quiet. they don't ask stupid questions were is not needed and they use the search function too, they are not going to post useless things to bump their post count and make others think they are the man/woman. it is just sux when the right moment for them to post up here they can't.

but then again if everyone is like that then vip 101 is not needed.

don't worry though since they can still lurk is all G.

so if some guy comes here with like a sick ass LEXUS or something, and is well acquainted with VIP styling... would he be promoted right away?

Most definitely. However, they must contribute to the forum and not just be another lurker. VSC is trying to have real members and not just lurkers. Some newbies might have some sick ass vip cars but how do I know they didn't have someone else build it. We want to educate others the correct way of vip styling not how some magazines have already misinformed them what it is. Anytime someone feels like they should get out of VIP 101, just PM me.

Not really looking to get out of 101 just yet, since I still have tons to learn, but I'd like to bring up a few points.

First of all, I love how VSC is set up, particularly 101. It is somewhat similar to 3si.org with the exception that on that other site, they don't lock out new members. The reason I find this setup much better is that, unlike most forums, it tends to keep potential troublemakers from spreading misinformation. One can't help but respect that.

On the otherhand, it does somewhat restrict other members from being able to reply to some posts to learn a bit more. Now I know that is what 101 is for, but at the same time, it allows room for a variety of 'double threads'. I'll use the Air suspension thread for example. I have spent quite a bit of time learning about 'air suspensions' and how they work, but I also have my own questions, particularly since it doesn't deal with a vip platform in particular. So when full-fledged members spoke of 'custom strut' setups, I was curious as to what was actually meant. Now, I could have gone ahead and made a thread in 101 and, forgive my presumption, but either I would be directed to 'search', which I've done, members would reply with their knowledge on the subject. I don't mind either response, but in a way, it almost seems as a waste for members to have to speak twice about a subject that is still being discussed. If members don't mind, then totally ignore the above points.


Also, I'd like to know how veteran members feel about being pm'd or messaged on private messengers. While people can learn alot just be reading and/or discussing topics in 101, I think there's a greater chance for new members to understand the 'essence' of vip through casual conversations. I'll admit that I've gained a bit more understanding thanks to Rasrx7 and his views on the 'Wagonist look' (if I can call it that). Through his knowledge, I have also been able to assist a few friends of mine with their own ideas, who have gone from 'boy-racer' to a more mature 'family comfort' type of enthusiast. While not exactly VIP, they seem to be heading in the right direction that pleases themselves and their wives. But I think that, if members don't mind casual conversations with new members, we (new members) can benefit from their knowledge on a more personal level.

I think Neva2wicked's response is one of the more well-thought-out thus far and is similar to the way I feel.  Though I wouldn't consider myself a "lurker" in the common interpretation, I would consider myself as more of one who "peruses" and learns.   Allow me to elaborate....

I've been a car enthusiast for ~18 years starting with mini trucks (laugh if you must),  built a couple of VW show cars, and as of the last 18 months have been drawn to the VIP scene.  Throughout I've always loved working on my own vehicles; it started as a need because I lacked funds to pay others to do the work, but I began to have an adoration for performance and wanted to experience the journey of building and fixing things.  Though I wouldn't consider myself a mechanic (I lack consistently accurate diagnosing skills!) I am one who will perform the work if someone shows me how if it seems reasonable.  Whether it's been tune ups, brakes, suspension builds, engine rebuilds/swaps, or even minor bodywork/fabrication, I am proud to say I've accomplished many projects that I wouldn't have been able to complete without help/suggestions/assistance  from others on forums such as VSC.

I've been a member of a number of forums going back to 2001 (some under the user name "Jonny2k" because of character limitations) and I've spent most of my time learning via other's threads and/or the search function which, by the way, is an invaluable tool.  I don't post every time I log in b/c I feel it's a waste of space if I don't have something useful to contribute.  I view DIY's for knowledge, peep galleries of member rides for inspiration, and check the classifieds for potential items I may be interested in.  And though I'll admit this has little to do with becoming a valued member of an enthusiasts forum, I'm proud to say that I have a 9 year/100% trading record on eBay.  However I feel this does, in some way, speak to and is representative of my longevity, integrity, and character in the online community.

One of the vital things I'm happy to have learned from VSC has been wheel choice.  There was a time many months ago that I almost purchased an inexpensive set of staggered wheels for my 2GS via eBay, just so I could have a more aggressive set of wheels and begin my VIP look.  Thankfully I resisted that urge to go out and purchase those wheels after reading many threads here and I learned that the look I was truly after would not be accomplished through eBay.  I'm now in possession of a nice set of aggressive & staggered 19" Works, Tanabe exhaust, and Tein CS suspension for my 2GS.  Ironically, none of it has been mounted on my car as of yet (longer story.....) but I am slowly building my daily VIP.  I'm rethinking my suspension and am considering saving for an Airrunner setup instead of the Tein....we'll see how/when the economy recovers before I do that.

I understand the administration's decision to regulate membership rather than grant full access immediately.  In my case having immediate "all access" wouldn't have made much difference as I still would have resorted to educating myself rather than posting.  Sorry for the rambling post but I hope it somewhat explains my position within the community. =)
