Florida man cancels Nissan GT-R order due to 'black box'

A Florida man named Scott Weires has [URL="http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080924/FREE/809189970/1506/rss01&rssfeed=rss01"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]canceled the order[/COLOR][/U][/URL] for his long-awaited [URL="http://www.autoblog.com/2008/07/23/in-the-autoblog-garage-2009-nissan-gt-r/"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Nissan GT-R[/COLOR][/U][/URL]. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you?

no b/c I don't race.  Even with that car, i wouldn't mash it, pointless to have a gtr, i know.

Dammmmm... Just like odometers, someone will figure out how to disable or reset the snitch box manually. ;)

I said this so long ago as one of the reasons why I hated the car.  That and the GPS regulators..which are also tied into that box.

Well i'll not be buying cars in 2012 then.Buy cars now save for later.:runcoold:But honestly that sucks it's terrible.Maybe the guy wanted to race it for track or trick it out.Me myself would do the same if it had that.Its shady!!!

There was a guy racing his GTR last week at the local track here.

i was reading in the latest motor trend when they were doing handling tests on various cars that when the GT-R wasnt being pushed to the limit with all the computers buzzing that it was like driving a sentra

im sure theres a way to override it. hackers love challenges!

Off topic:
Last night around 5am, I was awaiting the arrival of the bus.  As I was waiting, there was a cop parked on the vacant block.  Next thing you know it, a white GT-R passes by.  The GT-R gets caught at the light and clearly sees the cop (unless he was drunk).  Instead of driving off slowly, this guy was out as if he was tempting the cop to dare to catch him.  The cop didnt even bother.  That made my night LOL

deng, thats just too bad... my cousin just got his last week and boy is it sweet!!!

its funny how all new cars also come with drive by wire tech on the "throttle body" Onstar can disable this so the cops can catch you.. all new cars have it.. take over your car via satellites and GPS and stop the throttle from working but the brakes and steering still work.. what is this world coming too.. this is what they call the NANNY state... have to be able to control people is a real sickness the world governments have...

Can't you just un-stall the On star?it hink you can anything is possible.

HAHAH my GS has the drive by wire tech, but I don't have GPS LOL so they can't catch me!

For 80-90k I'd rather buy a slightly used Ferrari 360 Modena.

Yep, no newer GTR for me, i'd just get an earlier model, like those more anyways. Or another sports car w/o snitch device. Seems like a waste of money considering the price tag on the car.

I agree I would buy either a Skyline R32, R33 or R34 GTR any day of the week over the new GTR.

The OnStar in my Cadillac was disabled by me. I dont want any hackers getting into my car or the Man finding where I am. I have 2 sets of keys and the car lives in the garage.
