Flat Paint VIP Cars
Ive been into VIP style cars for a long time, since the OG days of the "old site", but there's one thing Ive lately been wondering. One thing I dont ever remember seeing (not surprisingly), is a flat paint job on a VIP car. Ive seen weird hues on Previas, weird mixtures on Celsiors, but Im trying to specifically remember any VIP style car that has been done in a "flat" color. Hell even satin counts for me. VIP has to have a hint of luxury, which is usually defined by the deep gloss for the paint job, but there's tons of exceptions that make me go "wow" and change my opinion. Have any of you seen a true VIP styled car with a flat paint job? Out of the thousands of pics Ive seen, one has never stood at, so Im wondering if I just overlooked it of one has never been done. If so, please post up!

I seen a few. One that stood out was a GS vert in flat black. Wasnt feeling the paint
It looks good on some Euro cars but I have yet to see anyone pull it of on a vip build (not to say it can't be done)

Awesome. Good to know some other people have seen it! I know satin has been huge lately (Rolls Royce Mansory sticks out to me and looks baller), so I was curious if anyone branched it to VIP yet, or if flat could work. I personally dont know if I would, but I do know Im tired with my current two-tone silver/white and am looking at all options before respray. Im anxious to see some pics now! Thanks
edit: thanks whack! that's the one I was referring to! You got to it before I finished my post.

Mansory does that though as a "signature" for some odd reason. They don 't always go ALL satin black..sometimes it's a mix of satin and gloss. Personally I feel it should be reserved for streetrods/hotrods/ratrods. For vip cars..hell no.

It's definitely cool like on some of the more famous Rauh Welt cars, but it's not something real classy looking. Which is why sports cars look so raw in it.

Yea it's not a cheap thing at all, that's why Im wondering are thinking it is only a sporty look and a "cop out" for "real paint". It is not cheap by any means, and I think done right could shock me. Like I said, it's not surprising I havent seen it, but I was curious more if some of the fewer more elder members had seen it. I am well aware of what works and what doesn't with VIP style, so base comments saying they don't go together is irrelevant to me. I'm just curious if I had missed some pics where it had been done properly. The more I think about it, the more I would LOVE to see a satin black (much like the RR) JP'd out LS430 with Scaras. I might mess around on photoshop later.

I forgot that I have flat paint on my car lol. The flat silver is soon to be painted satin silver.
My window frames, side mirrors and part of my side vents are flat silver. Personally I love it, it looks great because of the contrast between the glossy paint and flat paint and also goes well with the wheels. Its hard to capture in pics (Or I just suck at taking pics) but people love it in person

(I didn't take this pic thats why its a good one)

i say there's only 2 options. either it works or it doesn't. saying "that's not vip" really just means it's not popular
yet. maybe it will be or maybe it won't but waiting around for it will just leave you following. i've seen too many things in my short time go from "no no" to "fo sho" to try and say what is and isn't vip.
i do remember this car:
even though it was a** ugly imo, i believe it got a feature (although i think he painted more of the flat to the other color first).

Thanks guys! Yea Im still torn, because people I feel are saying "It could never be VIP" because they see the typical glossy paint, dish rim, and slammed LS. Although that is cool, I do want to branch a bit. I dont know if Ill ever do it, I was mainly concerned if some of you OGs had seen it. (more satin paint than flat)

coming from the tuner/drift scene...i LOVE LOVE LOVE the idea of a flat black car, especially if it can back up the awesome paint. to me, VIP isnt flat and boring. Should be shiny and glossy, something that slows with the kit, the body lines, and the wheels.

IMHO, Satin is the way to go compared to matt/flat.
Also, Satin paint would look real good on cars with rounded and sharp curves car (like the CLS a few post before me).

Hahaha...West Coast Customs, the last people that will build a proper vip car. This thread is silly to me. Satin paint, maybe..flat?? Hellsno. It will only "work" on more sporty cars as with that CLS. But to me..it only becomes a euro car not a vip car after you do something like that. It just doesn't flow. That car above is disgusting..no flow. Ugly wheels, ugly paint (should have just kept it red), and nothing really works together on it. Please don't think that if you saw it in a mag, that it EQUALS vip or vip styled. Other influences will be seen here or there all the time. But don't confuse those things with things that they are most certainly not. Yes, things do change over time..styles will evolve, but man. I sure won't let that crap happen to vip style if I have my way. There's no "class" in it to me. Just voicing my views..it's not the law.

I thought that VIP was about self expression and what not. If someone had the kit/interior crap/stance/look why wouldn't it be VIP? VIP is about going slightly over the top. The VIP cars in america are TAME compared to VIP in Japan. Satin paint is exclusive any way you cut it, and if it turns more heads then why not?? Isn't that what VIP is about??

I'll have to disagree with this statement. Primer is exactly that, dull and basic and primarily never perfect as is a pre-coat to what's getting sprayed on it.
A satin paint job is custom, and takes a skilled painter to make it look good and perfect. Satin has an almost metalic sheen to it. And when done properly it is beautiful to say the least (to each there own however) and nobody in their right mind that appreciates paint work could ever compare a satin paint job to primer. That would be on the verge of blasphemy.
Hell....that is blasphemy! :thelaw:
Here, allow me to point out a proper satin paint job again, how dare you call this PRIMER!! Hahahaa :signdammit:

i think it is one of those... because i can. type of things.
which is similar to VIPness.
or any kind of tuning.
personally VIPing is one place where i really really really enjoy seeing extremely glossy paint.
and would not care much for flatness.
i would rather see more burples and gweens.

I went to a Q&A session for Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat, Fugazi) and had many takeaways from it. One thing I took was something he said about new ideas...
"New ideas do not have an audience."
You have to make the audience.
Somebody, somewhere, thought that skinny womens jeans would look good on men. Now it's everywhere. I understand the whole VIP baller deal, but in all my reading I've never seen anything about what kind of paint one should have. It seems like some people are interpreting that aspect the way they want to. I know satin paint isn't cheap and in a lot of cases is more expensive than normal BC/CC. So to people "in the know", that's baller. Now it may look great and may come out not so great, but the one who is willing to take the chance gets all the glory if it works.
I personally, enjoy the "I'm so baller that you don't even know" strategy.
Sorry for the long post. I'm just a noob anyway.

i've heard alot of the super highend cars like that cls and bentley are actually full body vinyl wraps. think how much $$$ + depreciation is involved with an actual repaint. most of these cars are shop cars or shop sponsored cars anyways, and shops are a business. and all businesses are about the bottom dollar.
but the full vinyl wrap is still a couple grand.

gotta say i've never been fond of flat black cars...for it to explode the way it has over the last 3-4 years is ridiculous.
I just can't see it being "baller"
Regardless of what it cost, it looks unfinished...Like primer...
Even the black satin "paint job" looks like primer that someone rubbed down with some Popeye's Chicken...
Just not feeling it.

^^ I like the Popeyes reference. I think flat black can look good on very high end exotics, Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo. If they are done right. Wheels usually are highlighted on a flat painted car. I do not think it looks good on cheap cars. These are usually $100 paintjobs that are done in the front yard. Most of these satin and flats if they are done correctly will cost more than a BC/CC. It can be pulled off on a luxury car but who wants to repaint a $70K car that may not like the results

it's a love it or hate it and justifying it by cost or supercars it looks good on is a waste of effort. i like it, but i'm also a big fan of primer.

That LS is kinda hot. I like the blue pinstriping on the front and the white wheels.
Flat black has been so abused it makes me sad since i'm a hotrod guy at heart. Take a trend or style that can be done in peoples backyards with spray cans of primer and guaranteed it'll be played out in 2 years TOPS.
Now if it was covering your car in crystals.... that takes a little more money and effort, and since they don't sell sworofski at walmart.............

Oh yeah, plastic rhinestones by the pound and a bucket of glue. I have been looking on the web and most of the high end cars are done in vinyl. In fact there is a pic of an F430 parked in front of a graphics store.

Haha didn't say it was tight just that it's harder to do so hopefully that won't be abused like flat black was. I dunno if I could handle a bunch of 180sx's and legends rolling around all crystalled out.

personally i'm not a fan of satin/flat black...i associate those finishes with hot rods and old school cars with high horspower and with a black/powder coated theme...
as a a painter, the skill it takes to spray satin or flat black is a task and a half...i can promise you that any weekend painter and about 99% of shops cannot pull off a perfect satin/black finish..the reason that it is so difficult is because you can't rub the topcoat. there are three basic degrees of top coat refinishing...flat (no gloss), satin (semi-gloss) and gloss. Gloss shine can have flaws because they can be buffed and polished...runs along body lines, sags on edges of panels or even corners can be blocked and polished to blend in the the rest of the finish...the margin of recovery to fix flaws is wide...
flat and satin finishes cannot be polished...polish flat, then, in theory, becomes satin...satin polishes up to gloss...the paint job literally has to be perfect...no runs, no dirt no anything...the margin of recovery from a bad paint job is literally zero...
the advantages of spraying satin are that the matte clear is think and can easily burry dirt/dust...isn't necessary to keep a consistant spraying pattern...
i can appreciate the hardwork put into those kinds of finish but without the right theme, it's not attractive on VIP cars...

Man i used to think flat black was cool, but being in the 240 scene... lol, it was our way of hiding the fact that we had mismatched colors on different panels or priming our cars and getting ready for paint but never had the money to.

The whole Matte finish is gay imo. I think its just a bandwagon phase thats going thru the scene at the moment. Hopefully it lasts one season like the two tone thing.

Yup, if it can be done for $100 in your backyard then rest assured it's destined to be the next biggest thing.
Maybe i'll get aircraft stripper and rock the no paint job :-P
There was a hoodride mercedes a grip ago that did it and it looked CRAZY. He stripped all the paint and took sand paper to the whole car for a brushed look. I think he sprayed clear over it so it wouldn't rust. I thought I had pictures of it on my old computer but I guess not

i dunno, i'm starting to consider matte black.
this is just one of those things that is going to happen as cats look for influence outside the box. flat finish was big in the oldschool hotrod scene, then picked up in the pre-dub car/mini truck scene, then onto the dub/custom supercar scene. so naturally some japanese guy looking for the next big thing is going to see a pic of a flat black benz, lambo, rolls, etc. and run with it.
peronally i've been into all the styles i mentioned and liked matte the whole time but, as with everything else, it will come down to execution not theory.

^ Would you go the matte clear route, rattle can, or the matte black vinyl wrap route?
I think your car could really pull it off. Depending on what wheel finish you go with and some exterior details.

I'm so totally over matte/satin black. I think it's been done to every single new prestige ride, and most popular tuning platforms of domestic, euro, and japanese, including vintage cars.
I'm quite sick of it.
I could still stand a couple of bright matte colours though

MASSIVE DIY for VSC and vinyl wrapping vehicles is included in the later sections so I may test it out on my GS just for the DIY. However my buddy is about to wrap his car in white so if he actually goes through with it i'll just use that for the DIY. I'm pretty sure I do not want a flat black car. However, I guess if it had the jolly roger on the hood and said "Type Aaaarrrr" somewhere on it I could rock it for a little while. =)
The cost of the vinyl wrapping is almost entirely in the labor.
