SALT LAKE CITY (AP) _ Hoping to combat the "snitch" label that often leads to silent suffering, six [URL="http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/utah-PLGEO100104700000000.topic"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Utah[/COLOR][/U][/URL] schools have introduced a Web site that allows students to anonymously report bullies.

A [URL="http://www.newsday.com/topic/arts-culture/brigham-young-PEHST002155.topic"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Brigham Young[/COLOR][/U][/URL] University student, Justin Bergener, created the site, which also lets students post information about thefts, drugs and harassment.

Bergener said he hopes students who might otherwise be too scared or shy to speak up will be willing to post on the site.

"There really is this culture and code of silence that's particularly prevalent in middle schools and high schools," Bergener said.




Many students may not want to be seen in the office talking to an authority figure, said Rosanna Ungerman, principal of Provo's Dixon Middle School.

"It allows students to have an outlet and avenue to report things they might otherwise not have reported," Ungerman said.

Nearly 50 schools in other states are also using the Web site.

Here's how it works: School administrators are made aware of any tips either by e-mail or text message, Bergener said. For some schools, students have to create a logon and password to send a tip, but they still remain anonymous, though. But in most cases, schools allow anyone to send a tip with no need to give personal information.

"They'd rather have 10 good ones and one false one than none at all," Bergener told The Associated Press on Monday.

Bergener said his Web site is simply a third party that ships the tips along. SchoolTipline, which also has participating schools in [URL="http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/texas-PLGEO100104600000000.topic"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]Texas[/COLOR][/U][/URL], Washington, [URL="http://www.newsday.com/topic/us/california-PLGEO100100100000000.topic"][U][COLOR=#0000ff]California[/COLOR][/U][/URL] and Arizona, doesn't read the tips or reply to them. If a tip goes unread for a day or so, though, SchoolTipline reminds schools it's there.

The six Utah schools using the Web site include elementary, middle and high schools.

Even some parents have reported incidents anonymously, said Judy Runolfson, Lehi Junior High's assistant principal.

"There's a greater awareness that it's a situation that needs to be looked into right away because we know it can lead from something that's not that bad to something much worse," Runolfson said.

Telling on people is low..very low and should always be frowned on. Now iam not saying go shoot heroin and do an 8-ball of crack but as long as you don't infringe on others rights it's your own biz. What if the bullies become E-thugs?  They will continue to bully the nerds by reporting bogus claims on the snitch hotline.  :shrug:

Not everyone is capable of doing something about it. And why isn't getting an authoritative figure involved in cases of bullying considered "doing something about it"?
Day 1: Bully beats you up
Day 32: You know are capable of beating up the bully.
Day 60: Bully now has his buddies to jump you.
Day 74: You can defend yourself against the gang....
Day 90: Now bully and his buddies have weapons.

When this all could have been prevented by bringing in authoritative people to prevent the escalation.

For the most part snitching is not snitching but protection for everyone. Turning an ignorant eye to drugs is how it continues to spread and eventually effects someone you love and know.

Just running your mouth about bullshit b/c you want to feel better than others is wrong but preventing harm to a person or community is not.

bullies: 2 choices; take an ass whoopin like a man or whoop some ass.

drugs: i'll be damned if i'm gonna send someone to be judged by someone who snorts lines off his judges podium after hours. seen it with my own eyes.

shootings: eye for an eye.

i don't know, i'm not a saint so i can't see myself ever tattling. i caught my first felony behind not snitching. if you've walked the straight and narrow all you're life then you're playing on a different field. bottom line is if you play by the rules you can complain, but those people don't tend to find themsleves in bad situations. of course, this is all in grown up land.

thats part of growing up for a lot of people man. you get your ass kicked from time to time and deal with it.

i mean i can understand if maybe the bullied kid was a mentally retarded kid or something, then of course somethings needs to be done.. but for the average kid, its life.

I am not saying that is the only way artound it but not everyone is capable of defending themselves. Well everyone is but other choose not too. So i fyou choose not to confront a bully then there are other options. Life is choice not a set path.

I never done time or been arrested, have been caught stealing but that's what some inner city youth do and they get over it. I have been in fights and then have chosen to not deal with it on other occasions. Been bullied and fought back and brought in adults to handle the issue. There should always be a choice is my point.

For real! Who could possibily resist the old "so-and-so is hiding drugs in their ass" trick, or "so-and-so's computer has child porn on it."

Side note, whenever I go to kinko's to get vinyl's made or something I ALWAYS write "CHILD PORN" with a sharpie on the disk in huge letters.
