HELP! Broken Axle? Wheel Bearing?

i hear and feel this towards the drivers front axle/ wheel area.


when i drive it shakes the car a little and makes loud noises sound something like the rubber boot has fallen off or something and metal is grinding.

when i drive fast like 40=50 the sounds and vibration go away a little, but when i slow down or brake it shakes a lot and makes a lot of noise.


hard to explain but ill try to get a clip up. 


when im going like 5 mph i hear a loud grinding noise, and once again everything goes along with the rotation of my wheel, so like if i stop moving the car it stops, or if im going slowly it comes around slowly. 

i dont think it has anything to do with my suspension, just the drive train.

does sound like wheel bearing.   what kind of car is it?

That's the first thing that came to my mind too.  Must be a bad wheel bearing.

would a little wheel bearing shake the whole car?

how much would the fix cost and is it something i can do myself? i can change my suspension and brakes by myself.


is there someway for me to check if it is the wheel bearing easily? or how?


thanks for all your help so far. a wheel bearing fix sounds a lot cheaper than a whole axle.

also can i still drive it around? its not something that will compeletly break down aand not drive at all?

Wheel bearing damage would sound like a "roaring" from the bearing being affected.

You might need a shop press depending on how your wheel bearing is set up. In my Maxima a while ago, the bearing is pressed into the steering knuckle. You cannot do it yourself.

If your axle broke, you wouldn't be able to drive your car. It would be banging against everything and be obvious, but if it still moves, most likely it is your wheel bearing - drive close to a wall to hear it clearly.

its basically a grinding, screeching, thumping affect associated with the rate of speed, acceleration, and braking.

i hope its a wheel bearing.


is this common at 100K? ...for a honda? lol.



can i get some input as to how much it cost you guys, or how much u think it should be at average.

ive looked at pictures of the bearings for the front and i dont know if it can possibly be the source of the amount of vibration i get...iono.

On my Nissan it is very common for it to happen on a lowered car.

If you let the bearing grind for long enough it can get dangerous - the metal shrapnel can build up and lock the bearing and you could potentially lose control - but that's only if you decide to be 110% ignorant.

Get your car to a Big O' Tire and get it replaced. That's where I always get my repairs done since the manager at my local shop and I are good friends.

easy way to check wheel bearing is to lift both front wheels off the ground... then put one hand on the lower tire, and ur right hand on the top of the tire, then shake it back and fourth... any movement would indicate wheel bearing play..... put ur hands on the left and right of the tires and move it back and fourth, any movement there would indicate inner or tie rod play...  
 
axles, u can go under car and twist the alxe(long shaft) and make sure theres no movement when u twist it, if any movement, u have bad alxe bearings..

If your wheel bearing fails completely, your wheel WILL fall off, get it checked ASAP.

ok checked it out today and it turned out to be a broken stud. havent checked the bearing.

is it possible that the wheel bearing could cause the stud to break off?


i have a nice long story for this as well but no time now. but as for now, i have 1 broken stud only hopefully. wheel almost came off driving, and car jack fell over.

The stud broke on my supra one time, but that was because the wheel wasn't torqued down properly.  I saw it and was like " Du Mah!!!"

du ma!! hahah bwahaah that made my day...

my wheel bearing made grinding noises and vibrations to the car too.. got it fixed and it stopped...

fukkk i just found out i cant fix the stud because it ate away at the wheel and i basically need new wheels.


i never knew u needed the right lug and used watever, i used the wrong one and it ate into the wheel and slowly shaved it.


oh wells, i guess i get new wheels and it isnt as bad as it could be. just no money at this time.
