English is a big deal when it comes to reading what somebody has written. Writing retardedly, shows to those who do not know the writer, that the writer is retarded. Projecting yourself through writing can be very hard to do, and those who may be educated, will seem uneducated. I understand where the original poster is coming from, think it is a serious problem as well. It is simple 3rd grade english, at most, that most people write in, in everyday language. 
Simply put, learn it, and learn it well, for when one has to read your writing, that might be the deciding factor of your career.

Continuing on what Caoboy said, the local newspaper had an article about how kids are now incorporating (Internet) acronyms into their essays. Say whaaat?  It's like getting new breaks for the car!

They also speak in internet slang. Literally saying L O L, instead of actually laughing.

there and their is another problem for some.   The "break" "brake" one does bother me I don't know why.

Saying "L-O-L" aloud instead of laughing is synonymous with "I am a tool".

Here's a fun one. If you ever find yourself engaged in a conversation with a particularly annoying asinine individual who is simply waiting for you to finish talking so they can talk, start making up words and watch them nod to it as if they understand what you are talking about. It's especially funny in a group of people where everyone can see what a douche the other person is. There was his girl I went to school with who was SUCH a bitch and would interrupt you in the middle of sentences to correct you. I used to do it to her all the time. It's really easy, just take the first 3 or 4 letters from a word and stick something on the end of it.

Haha, I sometimes say "lawl" or "rawfle" in a conversation, but that's because I find that stuff pretty amusing.

I often claim "BRB", with friends, as a joke.

And saying "lol" or "lawlz" has because a sort of running joke as well.

First time I heard someone say "L-O-L" the first time it was funny.   Well because it was the first time I heard it used out loud in real conversation.   After that it was never funny after that.    I don't even know why "LOL" was invented.  I thought "haha" was self explanatory.   For more intense laugh I would use "hahahahahah"     I sometimes type "LOL" and I'm not even Laughing Out Loud.   I guess I type it to not hurt the other person's feeling.
