S13 drift car builds.

Well, I finally feel confident to post some pics of my project. It is still a work in progress, but I'm combining vip style with style of BM Hai drift cars. As the project continues, it may see a shift even more towards exe-style with a dark color, roof wing, and maybe leather interior. I'm just grabbing what I like most from each style and combining them to get what suits my tastes. I would enjoy input from you guys, especially others who are combining styles (like that blue SC on here).
So here it is, with both sets of my Vip wheels. :)

With my new Rays Victrix kruezers:  F 17x8 +19 with 7mm spacer.  R 17x9 +36 w 7mm spacer.

umm quick question. is that the 240sx with the 180sx tail lights right. because i remember when the i believe 89 or so 240sx's had the 180sx body style. and if so i am assuming that you did the s13 front conversion. 

am i correct in this assumtion?

Yep, I can go more flush. I'm going to have 25mm adaptors made, so I can be flush with the tops of the fenders.
As for the car, it is a 1990 240SX with 1997 kouki taillights and a Silvia front end conversion. the aero is by B-magic with 30mm fenders.

then what you have there my friend is neither a s13 nor a 240sx what you have is called a sileighty (not sure on the spelling) the japanese drifter's use to take the 180sx body and put either a s13, 14, and probably now 15 front end and they called them sileighty. i believe you could order them that way from the factory too, but not sure on that. 

in either case it is one sweet machine. and i for one cannot wait to see what you do next  ;D

haha, yep I know it's a sileighty, and that's what I usually call it, it's just I've stopped calling it that on forums because 240 guys usually flame anyone who calls a sileighty by it's proper name. As for S13, that's just the chassis code, and can apply to either the notchback (S13,PS13,HS13,MS13) or hatchback (RS13,RPS13,RHS13,RMS13) body styles.

Well, I don't condone knock-off aero, or rear over-fenders without wheels to fill them. But I guess it's a good start.

I'd rip those overs fenders off, and pull the rear fenders for a more "VIP" look, then you're wheels won't look so sunk. 

I run 18x9, 10 on my S14, and I wouldn't think of running rear-overs unless I had like 12's out back. I have a friends that run 10's on their S13's with just a pull and some camber.

wow with flares-assuming they are the 50mm over ones-you should be running (with the 17x8/9 combo) offsets in the -40 to -43mm range in front and about -45mm in back, especially if you are trying to go with a "vip look." And especially since you have dish face wheels meant to have lip, but with the very minimal amount of lip you do have, it becomes more imperative to flush the wheels so that it doesn't look like you're running wheels made for an accord or is300, etc... which is sort of how it appears now.

The fenders are only 30mm, but I do need lower offset. It's just really hard to find wheels that fit (esp on the 4-lug pattern). I already know what size and offset I need to be totally flush, the current wheels are just on there until my own wheels come out (I'm a wheel designer by trade).
Until then, I'm going to get some decent size spacers custom made so I can get the rays flush. (and if I had a 50mm fender, flush fitment would be more around 10" wide with a -5mm offset)

you can easily fit 10", +0mm in the rear of a stock fendered s13 with a VERY slight pull... +8mm with no pull at all. front fenders can take 9", -4mm with a roll, no pull (and conservative camber)... subtract 30mm from each of those figures for your flares. again, if you are attempting a "vip look" then you want something along the aggressive side.

I appreciate your input, but the sizes you list are more aggressive than what is flush, at least on an S13. For an S14 they would be nice. I have a couple friends with S13's, and in both cases, their wheel face sticks out farther than the fender. Example 1 is an S13 coupe with rolled fenders (no pull) with 15x7 +0. The other car is an S13 hatch with the same fenders as my car. The fronts are 17x9 +15 (which are a little sunken), and the rears are 17x10+12, which stick out of the sides of the car.
The wheels I'm going to have made will please you guys alot more in terms of fitment: 18x9+5 in front, and 18x10+10 (with rear upper control arms to camber it ina bit) although I'm going to experiment with 11's on the back to see if they'll clear. I won't be able to drift on them though. I'm just saying, when it comes to sizes and offsets, part of my job for the last year has been measuring and test-fitting wheels to acheive flushness. It just happens that like most drifters I'm on a constant lookout for cool used wheels, and the Rays really caught my eyes, even though I'm going to have to get spacers made.

although my idea of flush means the lip of the wheel lines up with the top of the fender, I know alot guys prefer flush to be sticking out.

perhaps you guys will want to play around a bit more with the wheel fitmets to truly explore the full potential of the 240s' fenderwells...
as stated... this is 17x8", +8mm with 10mm spacer front/17x10", +0mm rear on ks13 in background... rear fenders rolled and very slight pull (almost imperceptible pull unless viewed from some angles as in this shot...and even then it's not noticable unless you know s13s intimately):

i submit those as reference pics with specs listed...if you're going to make your own wheelset, and one that you say is supposed to be aggressive, then you might want to reconsider the fitments you were originally thinking of

Wow, it's amazing what suspension settings can do for wheel fitment. The pics you posted look amazing, although its kind of hard to see where the lip lines up in the dark. I just would not want this to happen (16x9 +15)  apologizies to whoever's car this is.

The set up I was going to do was based on my current camber and ride height. I'll definatly look into going more aggressive now, I'm just worried about cracking the fenders.  However, I still think that just adding 30mm to the stretched fender wheel sizes you suggested would not be the best solution. I'm going to play around with some spacers to see how far I can go.

Suspension plays as important a role in determining a car's appearance as the wheels/tires. That's why the two most important aspects of giving a car a certain look are the stance and wheels/tires. In the case of that 240 you posted, the car is like at stock height (maybe for snow clearance), and thus the camber is also affected by being close to 0deg... and usually when you have less than -.3deg of camber, it will always look like you actually have positive camber, which is just very unattractive. that particular car could look interesting if the tires were one series smaller in profile, and it was lowered at least 3.5" in front and 3" in back. The resultant negative camber from the natural camber curve might be enough to bring the wheels in alone, or if not, some adjustable plates up front and arms in back could bring things in a little bit more also.
If you have long wheel studs you can stack washers to experiment with wheel fitments also

Very nice S13! I never got around to getting wheels for my S14, but I wish I did.

The car has potential, but is definatly not vip styled. The wheels are a vip style wheel, but not on that car, with those wide fenders. They make the wheels look horrible.

a few questions for oneton or selectivebeef:
what suspension is used on this car (air or coilovers?) and what are the means for camber adjustment (plates?) also what might the tire sizes be? and the front fenders are completely stock? not even rolled?

I believe I can answer most of these queistions:

Car is on coilovers, with camber plates up front and i'm assuming adjustable rear upper control arms in the rear. The front fenders have been rolled, not pulled. I think what he meant by "stock" is that they are oem metal fenders not wider fiberglass ones. 

car is on coilovers... front camber is adjusted just via top plates... rear adj arm, but not really used to bring it in much (most aftermarket uca are made to add pos camber, not neg)... tires... i forgot exactly now, but when I had the wheels i was running 225/40 f and 235/40 r if I remember correctly.. and that's what should be on the wheels in the pic since that was right after the wheels came off my Q. front fenders are stock... barely rolled actually... still more rolling can be done, but hasn't been necessary amazingly enough. Though I would highly recommend rolling the fronts totally flat with a slight pull even if attempting to run similar fitment

since the car is on coilovers, would you reccomend the same specs for use with an air setup? or would it not change anything?

Wow...really sucks about the red Sil80 but that new hatch looks amazingly good in stock trim!
The wheels and suspension make all the difference...normally I think that stock colour combo is disgusting but you just made a very sexy car out of it!
I almost don't want to see it with aero..

that's another good example of how "conservative" wheels can make a conservative car look very good... of course, if/when you do add a bodykit to the coupe, then it will overpower the wheels, and will no longer look as good... so that's when you need to step up the wheels to accomodate the kit. It's all about the overall package

must be nice! Killer 2 tone coupe. Looks nice as is.

shells are near impossible to find in Canada , especailly for that cheap. Everything gets repaired or junked. 

the new coupe looks alot more vip styled then the fastback IMO. gotta agree that the two tone looks great

With 30mm front and 50mm rear fenders (I'm only going to run overfenders because otherwise the new face won't fit)
I'm planning on running 18x9 +0 front and 18x10 -8 rear.
I'm only doing 10's in back because first and foremost this car is a functional drift competition car, and with my current power level, 10's are the biggest that I can consistently spin.
What do you guys think of this setup?

You're current setup looks great, leave it the way it is.

If your idea of flush is similar to that seen in the below thread on Ziptied.com (Front: 18x9.5 +3 225/40/18 AD07s Rear:18x10.5 -10 245/40/18 ST115)

With 30mm fenders up front you can expect to be able to run at least a 18x9 -13
With 50mm fenders in the rear you can expect to run at least 18x10 -16

Not available yet, these are 1st production pieces. I needed to test fit everything to make sure it fit before it goes into full production.

Ahh okay, small price to pay to prevent the need for major bodywork. On the upside, it still looks clean and well fitted, plus the bolts'll be less conspicuous (sp?) with the light paint.

Yah I'm waiting for when bumpers for 240s get a little more sedate and lose the huge mouth openings and vents... 326 and the supermade guys seem to be leading the charge...

Really nice S13... I'm feeling those Euroline-lookin RAYS ;D.  VIP Drifter style is awesome... if I ever get a s13 I wouldn't have it any other way

Richard Rabe (my painter and friend) sent me pics of the car in paint. I'll get it back tomorrow reassembled (lights and side skirts are off in the pics), put the good fitment wheels back on it, and snap some pics. Still needs to be wet sanded and have the tape-stripe between the two colors painted. I plan on putting an origin roof wing and rear lip on it next..

why didn't you mold the quarter panels to the car? So far the car looks amazing...can't wait to see the finished product

Mirrors are painted, but the mounts are still black, like on my evo and many newer cars.
The quarters aren't blended because the car is going to be used for drift competitions and the quarters need to have ability to be replaced if damaged.

Only thing is, the paint stops just above the lower bodyline instead of at it, so it has to be angled on the side of the front bumper to meet with the side line....looks kinda weird

I think his other car looked a bit more vip maybe...this is an old thread in anycase, it's gone through a lot of updates! Quite the story in fact.

CleanS14 has a point. THis is a nice concept and very well executed but it's far from VIP style.

I'm actually happy you noticed. It's been bugging me too. I'll fix it when I add the black trim stripe that seperates the colors.
As for the whole VIP style debate, I really don't consider that S14 to be vip drift either, it just seems a natural progression of drift style.
The definition of vip style itself has really progressed from when I first started this thread. As for my current car... it's not drift style... it's not vip style, but draws a lot of influence from it...it's something new that hasn't really been done before. It doesn't have the flash of D1 cars, but it is pretty wild in it's own regards, but in a civilized manner. It's a style onto it's own, and I'm really liking it

I don't think I've seen many if any drift cars progress to that level. If you look at the details of the S14 you'll notice that there are in fact VIP cues... first the stance, second the attention to detail, and the style is clean and gangster like VIP cars should be.

I don't know that your car hasn't been done before... looks like a few cars I've seen in Japan already... and kinda typical build style of random parts thrown in here and there... it is interesting though and no doubt it has a style of it's own... :-\

Hey man... no need for a personal attack. Frankly, all of the other S13's that you posted look like sh*t compared to Yurikaze's. Check out the blue painters tape on the last one, the mismatched rims on the first. Sure the front end conversion has done before, but I havent seen anyone do it as nicely as Yurikaze. So relax a little bit and appreciate the quality put into it.

I wasn't saying that the S14 front end conversion was something new and different, just the execution. Of course I've seen all those other S13.4 photos before. It's the reason I took a different approach to my car. I was tired of the halfassedness of most of the cars, and the over the top tackiness of D1 and FD
cars. The cleanliness of vipstyle inspired me to acheive a more civilized and subtle look with this car, even if the end product is not recognized as vipstyle itself.

It's not a personal attack man... stating the facts... and to be brutally honest his car isn't far off from those depicted in my post.  Okay... it's got matching paint and is just out of the paint booth... wow that's amazing...

I don't think the car should be associated with the "cleanliness of vipstyle"... because in all honesty it's not that clean... okay it does have nice paint, but it also has a red seat "tackiness" and a crap seat in the passenger side... I won't nit pick... but if you look at any VIP car... or VIP inspired car... there is attention to detail that makes the car "clean".

Like I said before the car is interesting... I guess I just have high standards.  I'll leave this one alone since it can go back and forth... nice car I guess.

The car does look a tad better than those I posted though

yurikaze's s13.4 is much cleaner than most but i would love to see them with more extreme wheels like the prototypes on the blue lancer or wider VIP wheels

The seats and wheels are just temporary, as the car is a constant work in progress. They were actually from my previous S13, as you probably know.
At this point, it sounds like I'll be getting some prototype wheels like the ones on the lancer, but with lower offset and more lip. 
I still need to lower the car more at this point too. I understand that the car is not going to be everyone's cup of tea. It's too drift style for the vip guys, too subdued for many of the drift guys.. etc.
I'd rather get it to a point [b]I'm[/b] happy with it than worry about pleasing people on the internet that probably will never even see it in person.
If other people along the way like it, it'll certainly make me happy, but it's not the car's reason for being.

btw cleans14. If that black S14 is yours, I think it's beautiful. especially minus the decals.

Totally understood and point taken... cuz ultimately you build your car for yourself. Thanks for the props! That was my s14... 'til I sold it for shitload of money!!! hahaha... yah I'm not a fan of stickers... and the car seldom had them on it.

I think those wheels are super cool... I myself am looking into the Gullflame Gravity wheels (similar style... no lip).

If you have a 240, and want to do it VIP style, you're already facing an uphill battle... since it's a sporty coupe platform. And the paint color on your particular car makes it just that much harder...
in all honesty, if you used a more extreme looking dish-face wheel, and maybe even in a chrome finish.. and then sliggity slammed the car, those elements might be enough to help the car achieve a VIP look despite its "handicaps" (i.e. the color and the fact that it's a sports coupe). Heck, just drift on the big fatty dish wheels, too... it's not a big deal if you've got the hp to turn them. 
326's cars are some of the best genre-crossing hybrids right now imo

the supermade 180's & silvia's look pretty vip...

Hum...nice car but I don't find it nearly classy enough to be considered leaning towards Vip...especially with the ketchup red interior with cloth buckets.

I had to put on a battery tie-down to pass tech, and it interfers with the hood. I'm going to fix that.

Update: The S13.4 is getting fixed (thanks V8_Aristo!), and I'm picking up a set of wheels for it tonight. 18x8.5 +40-blah something (I'll use spacers) and 18x11 +23.

In the meantime, I've started a new project!
I've realized I really love building beautiful cars, and want to keep doing it, hopefully getting my name out there in the process. It'll be nice to have a backup car too, so I'm not missing events.
I plan on making it street legal and comfortable (as far as anyone will be able to tell, but also be able to used as a competitive back-up track car)
I've already got the aero for it, and have started to piece it together in the garage.

I mocked them up on the hatch, but I'm probably going to put them on the coupe once I refinish them (and they'll go back on the hatch once I go 5-lug with the coupe).
