This question comes up atleast once a year. I still havn't seen any wheel refinishing places be able to replicate that finish.

yup hawaii shops laughed at me when i asked if they had the equipment. i guess they call it diamond cut for a reason.

i took a lowenhart to sabs when i picked up my volks. owner said he can machine the lines in the face but cannot get the rainbow effect. i don't know what is so special about the finish (looks like paint under the clear to me) and why they can't do it, but they can't.

hmmmm, intresting.
I just emailed the info on diptech to see if they can immulate a diamond finish. we'll see.
Im not sue why i think this......but isnt the vip modular wheels painted to reflect diamond finish?
could be wrong.

indeed, but if it can't be done it can't be done.

It's just machined. I have no idea what causes the rainbow effect, but I've had one of these refinished:
And the shop I sent it to replicated the machined finish very well. Although I have to admit, I'm not sure if it still had the iridescence.
I think I'm gonna get my EX-C Meshes machined, so we'll see then.

I seen some wheels at pep boys with the diamond cut finish but the clear was kind of wavy and not smooth.

i just went out and took a razor blade to my wheels. looks like there's a 3 step process. first there are the lines machined in the wheel. second there is a silver coat but it's so thin that it doesn't fill the lines. next it looks like it's a pearl in the clear that settles into the lines.
my guess is the silver is the problem. it is hella thin. i don't think a person can spray that thin and get complete coverage. if it fill the lines the clear/pearl would just lay flat and wouldn't have the same effect.
that's just going by what i could tell though. may be way off.

well what i usually like to do when i refinish my wheels is i go buy a diamond about this size...
then u just slowly sand it back in fourth in one direction as if you were sanding your car. once the diamond dulls, just get another one.

the rainbow effect is caused by the clear coat. it's pretty much like the bottom of a cd. without the clear coat it would be a pia to clean cause dirt would get stuck in the grooves all the time.

True, but its more of a dipping process than spraying on clear coat. They go under whats called a PVD coating. Basically all rainbow effect (diamond cut) or the chameleon (burnt titanium) have differant shades of this coating.

Correct the diamond comes from a clearcoat. I used to have a friend who put wheel acid on his diamond graphite maya's and completely ruined the finish. He ended up resurfacing the wheel with a sanding disk and used just the diamond clear pearl coat that goes over that nice cadillac white pearl and it looked better then new.

The first image is that of a wheel that has a machined face. The process of machining requires a larger lathe with a CNC operated cutting bit that contours the face of the wheel.
The second image is of a barrel that has been lightly Aurora plated. It's not burnt titanium, although the finish is quite similar to that of heated titanium.
