painter`s block for vip mural

i`m having my version of writer`s block for the mural i`m doing on the hood of my buick. the car is white and i want to do something repersenitive of the vip-luxury car theme. ive been airbrushing for years but i think i need help with this one,any idea`s?

i cant think of any images that can single handedly represent vip. a lot of cars will have images representing the asian culture, but you cant really paint something and say...that is vip.


only thing u can do for representing it are logos of vip companies like junction produce or garson.

first off i'd like to see the buick.

they do murals in japan, but not so much on the exterior. faces inside the gas cap are big, and the owner of onestar has a mural of his car with some city scape on the underside of the trunk lid. there's some nice pinstrip/sticker detail work over there too but an airbrushed hood mural? i dunno... sometimes just cause you can doesn't mean you should.

i'm not the one to trip over a non-platform, but this one was kinda out there. that's why i would like to see exactly what is going on. there was actually a decent buick in the sema 07 coverage in vipcar.

the buick is the one i posted pics before that i`m doing.its a 93 lesabre. i`m building it in the stlye,but i belive someone made a comment in a nother thread how it`s more luxury than vip. which is true,however,i`m taking stlyling notes on how to build it up closley to what the look is. TRUE,i dont see any murals on vip cars,but i`m not doing o lowrider stlye mural. i`m keeping whatever i do subtle. customizing cars are only part of my buisness,the paint is my main source of revenue.so i have to do something to draw people`s attention to that fact. thats why i asked on any idea`s.
ive done elegant ladies before on a lincoln wagon that i built.airbrushed them in a black n white photo look.i got alot of positive response,except for one chick who thought it was sexist.(she didnt get the point,lol)
i`ve seen a couple of buicks done for the sema show,thier VERY similar in body style.if that helps the visual.

I think you should go the route BLKonBLK98 suggested and do your mural work under the hood or deck lid.  Or do a big mural on your headliner.  On the exterior of the car I think it will subtract from the luxury style you're trying to obtain.  Something about air brushed murals on cars looks tacky to me.  That's not to offend you in any way.  I just think it's not the best idea, it clashes with what you're saying you want to make your car into.  Does that make sense?
As for the content of your painting, I think fine looking females are a good source of inspiration. ;)

some good opinions here,thats why i posted this. it seems that doing something on the hood isn`t popular.i still might do something,but i`m definatly thinking of a "ghosted" image.in otherwords,it only shows in certain light. but maybe something more predomanint in the jambs and underside of the trunk( see my other thread here for my trunk pics) so girls seem to be the popular image?
i should be posting more pics of the car once i can get back at the outside of it.its winter here and its my regular driver. that and ive been waiting for my tires to show up. i just got 18`s and am building my own widebody flares. fitment is crucial!

i think ghost images could work. the problem i see after that is matching the style to a car that is opposite. japanese themed accent work like cherry blossoms, koi fish, etc. would be my suggestions but slap them on a hood of a buick and they would be out of place.

I can't say I am a fan of this idea mainly because the car is a domestic. When a car is not a traditional VIP car platform, its almost as if you have to try extra hard to stick to what already has been done for it to be considered vip styled. Like slamming the car on Work Euroline DH wheels would be your best bet.
 
IMO, just take some cues from the style and use it in your build and don't worry if it is considered [I]VIP styled[/I] or not. Try to aviod any air brushing on the hood. Use your skills anywhere else on the car other then the exterior.

Uh, then trade that Buick and sell your other show car and buy a top doller VIP platform. From what I've gathered, you REALLY like the VIP carscene. So why not actually get into a VIP car? It just seems like it would be waaaayyyy easier (and much, much cooler) than that Buick build. My .02

i think i need to clear a few things up here. first of all,i wasnt sure what to put on the car. i never said i was going to put japanese stuff on my car. the question i asked is if anybody had any good idea`s.
second of all,i said from the start that i`m building a vip-luxury STYLED car. taking stlying cues from things i see that would work on the buick. it is not a true vip,and never will be. just like cavaliers at import shows back in the day,the original scene evolves. i thank those who have kept an open mind about this.i know everyone keeps asking for pics,i`ve been posting them! nobody`s viewing them. i posted the fiberglassed trunk pics and got NO responses.
as for upgrading,i would love to! (the lexus is a personal fav) but i`m a single dad with three kids. i live in a town with 40,000 people. customizing cars is all i do ,and there`s only enough buisness to keep the bills paid.i am selling the wagon,but the divorce is taking all of that.
so have a little faith,i`m positive that i`m going to build something worthy of a second look when it`s done.

Your pics dont' work for 101'ers, we have insufficient privelages.  You need to host them on a site like PhotoBucket and post them as IMG files.
Also, I'm not knocking your choice to build the Buick luxury styled, I just think you'd have more fun and better results with a different platform.  I understand you're doing something unique and original, that's commendable.  But you have to expect this type of response when you post questions like this one.  People who are true to the roots of the VIP scene probably won't see eye to eye with you (I don't even own a VIP platform myself.)  I was simply making a suggestion, but you are free to do whatever you want. :thumbsup:

 i dont think anyone`s knocking my choice,just misunderstanding it. but thats why i`m posting these questions. you dont show up to a 4x4 show with a mini truck!  i think when i get the bodywork going it will surprise some. i just dont want to do something and then after the fact have people hate it.the mural is a good example,i`m glad i asked. the popular opinion is to do something very subtle,the oppposite of what i thought to do.so as i build the car i think this feedback is important.

Okay, after reading where this thread is going, it seems like what you wanna do is airbrush some designs on a Buick and your not sure what to do. First I would remove the VIP monicker from your thread title for obvious reasons. Second i would take the recommendation of doing something, in trunk lid or under hood, inner gas latch, or even the door jams for a more subtle effect. Sure this scene is about "hey look at me!" but not expressing it in a gaudy fashion...IMO

as far as getting no responses on your posts you might take it as a blessing. normally the responses to threads like yours are less than polite.

as far as your build, i concur that you should just refer to it as "luxury" from here on out. unless you make a point to stick to strict vip styling, and execute it well, it will only bring headaches in the future.

as far as the mural, i think you have got your answer it just wasn't what you wanted to hear. exterior murals go against the luxury look you are trying to achieve. i've tried to come up with ideas that would work, but honestly [I]nothing[/I] you do will be cleaner than if you did nothing.

Well, they didn't work until just now.  I was getting a message from VBulleting stating I don't have sufficient privelages to view your pics.

ive seen that car on you tube! lol,its one of the one`s that got me interested! something like that on the inside of my jambs and trunk could work.
i`m going to pose another dumb question-what about painted wheels? i just upgraded to 18`s. there a five spoke design and come black inside with a chrome lip. any thoughts on painting them white to match the body color? (leaving the lip chrome of course!)

color matched is much better than white on black imo.

I'm posting this from my phone so I can't see pics. How about doin the mural on your wheel lips? Like I said I can't see any pics in this thread on my phone but pretty much my idea would be to have the lips of your wheels color matched to the car and then do a ghost mural on them 360 degrees around the lip for instance do a cherry blossom branch that goes all the way around the lip. The center of the wheel you could polish it or paint it black. Just a thought I had. I can get a lil over creative at times. Hope that gives you another idea.lol

the wheel lip is chrome and the inside is painted,so i`d have to do something on the inside.i think i`m going to stick to the jambs an decklid. but the cherry blossom branch isn`t a bad idea.the interiors dark blue tho,maybe a blueberry branch? lol...ok,maybe not.:shrug:

Clean body lines are a must for me, and the fenders just threw the entire front end off for me.  Maybe this is me returning to my VDub roots, but it just clutters up the front end.
 
And the exhaust... 3 tips per side?  Neat for the wow factor, I guess.

i  did up an escort gt awhile back. i went went with a "hotwheels" theme.(for  my twin boys) and i airbrushed a boimechanical look with a anime girl on the side! laugh all you want at the thought,but the car got so many people wanting airbrushing i quit my job,years later its still my full time job!
 i took the car to sport compact nights.the rich guys with nsx`s n such laughed at it. lesson learned(thus the origanal question of this thread) but NONE of the crowd hated it.i was overwhelmed at the complimints!
point is,there are always someone who will like it. but if you want to impress your peers,stick to the unwritten rules.

Another thought that just came to me. Read through my thread titled "tying the knot" and you'll see the significance of the different types of knots. Basically they are hung at entrances to temples for protection and luck so on so forth. Considering that the doors are entrances to the car you can air brush some rope long the top of the door jambs for each door and incorporate that into a mural that goes throughout the entire door jamb. Man some of these ideas I come up with.lol but anyway look at my thread and you'll see a picture of a huge rope hanging, I think that one would be best to do along the top of the jamb because it's a long wide 'knot' so to speak.

you don't have to like it but that's the face of modern vip, and this car has been like this for some time now. definitely a trend setter, a favorite among many vippers, and so many  details you'll see something new the first 100 times you look at it.

i like it,but to each their own.if everybody did the same thing it would become boring. you need people in each auto culture to push the boundries to keep things fresh.kinda like a buick vip.....lol...sorry.(c`mon laugh,it`s funny)  but we do need to keep the tradions in mind.personally i can appreciate both the you tube car and notvip`s car for the idea`s and presentation put towards them.

By no means am I saying that it wasn't a stellar build.  I'm just saying that those two things are two that I don't consider a good idea for that vehicle.
 
This is a prime example of why people should build what they want, how they want it.  Because at the end of the day, I respect the car a ton... even if there are issues I have with one or two aspects.  And I am quite sure the owner is happy with the vehicle.

VIP should be very clean having art could throw off. I would personally not do a mural on a vip car unless it had connections with japanese art.  Even if i did it would be very minimal.  However here are some murals on my friends 300c.  Its not VIP, but still one baddd ass car... i think something like this may look good on the buick. The pass side has a hour glass girl, ice cube, dr dre, biggie, 2 pac, eazy e, and snoop.  i ran out of space on my camera.

wow,who did the airbrushing?  on my lincoln i did something simalar with the girls,problam is the buick is my daily driver.thats why i first thought of the hood. less wallmart rash on it,easy to repair. not to mention the downtime of taking the car off the road to paint it.
if you look up airbrush-sperlich on the net,you`ll find a wicked paintjob on a vw pheaton. it`s a tribute to the yakuza. a japanese theme on a euro.....

Can you airbrush high-temp paint? Koi fish on bbk calipers? Or cherry blossoms on bbk calipers! Man I think I'll use some of my ideas for my future builds.

The general answer is going to be no.  Not that you can't PAINT on high temp paint, but that unless you're keeping it 'high temp', which limits the details you could do...
 
I am unaware of any way (other than powdercoating a possible clear on afterwards...) to airbrush something that deals with THAT much heat and wear/tear and keep it in a good condition.

actually,modern paints will surprise you.engine`s are being painted with the same paints as the body of your car.i did the engine of my crown vic,it has headers,and the paint is still holding strong. its all in how the part is preped. i think the issue would be that too many layers of paint would hold in some heat,and thats not good foor brake parts.
 however,this is with the urathane paints.by next year it`s law in most places to be switched to waterbase paints.i dont have enough experiance with them to make a call on what they will do.

 but i still have time,i`m just picking up the tires today.i couldnt start the bodywork till i knew where the flares would sit over the rims.

I'll hopefully be getting some wilwood brakes on the camry this year. Uncanny if you say it's possible to paint them then I'll probbly be hitting u up. Then again the wheels I want are dish type and they'll hide them completely so now I dunno lol.

unless your building a trailer queen,i wouldn`t do it.i painted the inside of my wheelwells once,they took too much of a beating.brakes are just as exposed to road rash.

I am affiliated with VooDooAirbrushing in the Toronto Ontario area. I've been airbrushing since 92. We are experimenting with the over-reducing ratios for the waterbased stuff. We are pushing the boundries of a couple different companies stuff, i'll keep you informed of the results if you want.
 
 
As far as the mural thing goes, what year is the car? I also can't seem to see the pics. 
 
Set up a Photobucket acct and copy an image off your computer to the photobucket acct. Use the old uploader, I have an older computer (and a newer one) but the old uploader works best for old and new computers. Then place your mouse arrow over the picture( don't click it yet!) you should see a horizontal bunch of titles pop up. Go to the bottom [B]IMG[/B] line and click it to highlight it. Then click and drag that now [B]highlighted [/B]bottom [B]IMG[/B] line into the message you are typing (...on VIP forum, or wherever) and you'll see it pop up when you release the button on the mouse.
 
As far as the mural thing goes, I dunno what to say. I've done some lowrider murals, but to pull off a mural on a vip car would be a feat in itself. If I was to do something it would be something small, maybe on the trunk somewhere, but monochromatic, and small...no big flashy color.
 
It doesen't have to be the size of a billboard to be bad ass...
 
Most of the stuff that comes out of VooDoo is small as hell, motorcycle gas tanks, helmets, etc, but we do full size cars as well.
 
I'm thinking of something like the effect this mural has, (not the image...the way it was painted, almost ghosted).
 
I can't take credit for this one somebody else painted it, I got the image a while back off the net...but it gives you the idea of what i'm talking about.

cool,thanks lophat!!!   i take it now that i should write first before placing the photo.  i live in brandon manitoba,its not much,but its home.  i `d bet by the style that that mural it`s done by the famous"mr. cartoon" amazing stuff!!!
 now that i have a good pic of the car up,i should point out that i`m only about a quarter done the outside. ive molded on the ground effects of a bonniville se. this is not a direct fit btw,its a lot of cutting and plastic molding!!but to make it look bigger,i`m molding on flares of a ford explorer.it has the same shape for the wheel opening.my new 18`s will help,these are 17`s,my winter wheels.  the car is going to stay white. so having something ghosted will involve using pearl and a little gray. so the image i choose is important.

Man those cars have huge wheel wells don't they?

Thank you all for having such patience with my fellow Canadian bretheren.
 
The choice of car associated with true VIP style is outlined very explicitly on this site and elsewhere on the net. You don't own a true VIP platform so while you can do up your car VIP [B]style [/B]it won't be considered VIP by alot of people in the circle.
 
Now with that being said, there are some platforms that seem to skirt the boundries of true VIPness, that get a bit of a pass. Your Buick is just nowhere near true VIP status, or one of those cars that get a bit of a pass...and don't take it the wrong way...I relate it to someone showing up with a 81 Honda with 15 Cragar ss rims to a musclecar night and wondering why everybody was staring.
 
No disrespect, just doesn't fit the criteria. I own three cars and none of them fit the criteria for this particular website, so I won't post pics.
 
Now if these guys have allowed you to still roam around here, they may be cool with just wanting you to learn the in's and out's of the whole VIP status. I am still a newbee and i'm still learning things. Mind you I am a guy that has been into cars since the age of 5, and for the last 15 yrs I have built lowriders and bodydropped mini trucks, painted custom cars, bikes, boats...well you get the point...lol.
 
But this is a different class of vehicle modifying I want to get into. My next purchase is going to be a Honda Oydessey van...(i keep spelling that wrong!) to tow the kiddies around in, so if I want it to be done right, I better know what the hell i'm talking about before I claim it to be something it's not.
 
Before I modify any car for a customer or even offer advice for whoever asks about a brand of vehicle, I research the style and then research some more, before offering my 2cents.
 
No one is trying to offend your selection of vehicle choice, just let you know that this is a forum for certain vehicles that fit a certain criteria, they may still offer advice to you, I just want you to know what's up...that's all. Take it easy dude!

Man the buick doesn't fit the criteria but I guarantee that if you pull it off properly the japanese guys will probably love it considering they like a lot of american stuff. I say you move forward with the project. I know you mentioned what your financial situation was earlier in this thread but you will have to spend some money to pull this off right. From me looking at the car if you get some 19's and make them fit it'll be perfect. I think a nice thick 5 spoke like the junction produce "scara" wheel would look right at home on that car. What suspension options does that car have? Because if you buy some decent used jdm wheels to make them fit you may have to do a decent amount of suspension work for them to tuck in properly.

thanks camryvip,i appreciate that. i do belive when its done that it `l change some minds. however i dont expect anyone to run out and buy a buick!! lol  i do find it funny however how many are too quick to judge something different. ive been working on customs for 20 years,seen a lotta trends come and go and alot change. i belive it was mostly tuners who looked at the luxury cars and thought,mmmm,comfy,fast,loaded,just needs my personal touch! i seriously doubt that it was accepted right away,and if they didn`tgo for it despite any ridicule,it would only be the stuffy banker owner types driving them still on the stock rims!!

I hope you don't think i'm tyring to start anything brother, I have seen these guys tear people to shreds for simply posting pictures in the wrong places...lol.
 
I am not afraid of trying different things, I have made lots of vehicles look good that others would never think in a million years would look good...laying them out on their nuts does help.
 
I am all for new things and trying to not "do what everybody else is doing".
 
Change is good and makes the world go round...in a cooler different way hopefully.
 
I am not judging your choice of automobile...I love Buicks. My buddy bought a 1960 Buick Invicta station wagon this summer and he wants me to bag it and lay it out on wide whites for him, it should look great!
 
Another one of my buddys does the GN thing, and another put a ridiculously oversized turbo in a century! And of course the holy grail...the Riv!

My buddy Greg used to be the head painter at Legendary Motorcars and he wants to run the 60 Invicta wagon ratty this year then do a complete resto mod ground up next year over some 20's and 22" billets.
 
Do your thing brother, please don't take my post the wrong way ( if it was me you meant?) while your car may not be everyones cup of tea, showing the finished product may indeed change some minds about the Buick.

The fisnished product always makes everyone happy. I believe someone on this site has in their signature that "you love flowers but you don't appreciate the dirt" something along those lines.

You're missing the boat I think...I too have been building custom cars for over 20 years.  This style is a specific style with roots and attracts a very special type of enthusiast.  If you'd lived in Japan, and been around the style, I'm sure you'd have a much different tone/opinion on the matter (and have a better sense/understanding of the style).  

You're not going to change many minds (in regards to vip)..this isn't really something that should be made to change minds.  It just doesn't work that way.  This style has been evolving for over 20 years now (much to the surprise of many new enthusiasts who think this is some new style/trend)  I do agree on what you said about creating something new..and if you do, it won't be vip..it'll be something completely different.  We've had other new members say very similar things and then in time after reading and learning found out exactly what we were trying to convey in the first place...

no lophat,i wasnt refering to you.it was to those who don`t think i get it. to clear something up,i came on this site to do excatly that. i want to build my car with some of the styling cues that i`ve seen on vip cars. but i do know from experiance that that even tho no one around here (manitoba)would ever know the differance,it would be wrong of me to catagorize it as such. 
i think the problam is there is no real sub catogory for it.like i said,its like cavaliers and neon`s back in the day at import shows. there`s enough of them out there now to call them either tuners or sport compacts. but there was no titles back then. hell,they got old cars and mustangs showing up now..???? I never once called it an official vip,i belive i said several times that it wasnt`.i do belive it`s bodylines have something in common with some vip`s i seen and can benifit from the styling cues to make it unique.

The way you worded it made it sound like you were confused a bit.  I'm glad to hear that isn't really the case.  You have to understand that we get a lot of people who come in here and try to change vip into something it's not.  This isn't our style..we've borrowed it from Japan and should respect them and embrace the style appropriately.  That's all...

 glad to clear that up. being in 101 status i`m not able to post in my type of catagory.(not that i`m asking to move out of vip101 for a while yet)    the origanal question was if there was a vip mural i could put on my car to help the look,blk on blk`s answer was a correct,no. thats not the look. so the responses ive gotten are helping the clean style in the end i think. tho i`m still not sure what to airbrush in my jambs or undertrunk.
i`m thinking of airbrushing some buick style vents and tags on the side,same as the new buicks.maybe ghosted images of luxury buicks of the past and present?   any thoughts?

I can see your project turning out to be pretty cool in the end.  I'm not going to look at it and think VIP, and I doubt anyone will.  But I'm sure if you keep doing clean work it will be somehting to admire.  I agree, this isn't the most ideal forum for presenting your particular project.  But you certainly have some balls to come in here and post a build thread in the first place, so props for being a pioneer.  Is there a Buick modifying community on the web?  I'd like to see what other guys do with their cars and compare it to what you're trying to create.

very nice buick,i see what you mean by the vip tag put to it. i guess it`s like the rat rod term.once again,purists hate the term,refering to them as hotrods.like it or not,the mass public almost changes the origanal term.show a pic and most people will refer to `em as ratrods. 
 vip is falling towards this too,the mass public doesnt know the history.so any luxury car now falls in this catogory. the best you can do is like you did with me,try to educate them. unfortunatly as a style becomes popular,the more chances the media have of changing it .
 i still think if a new term for vip inspired cars are used,it will preserve the historic style. and hopefully prevent any mis-use of the origanal ideal`s .

So does that mean you aren't going to try to make your Buick vip then?


Dude, you live in Canada. You have SO many more options to bring in something that the US will never be able to get. Why not hit up EliteAutoStyle, that dude always has some cars for sale. You can get something that's totally unique to this site, yet still be 'platform'....up to you. 

Just remember, some cars can cut it even though they aren't 'platform'...others, just don't look in any way 'vip' no matter how much work you put into it.

-buying another car is not an option at this point,i`m trying to get rid of a few! but in a few years,well that may be another story. an when i do look for another i`ll definatly know more of what to look for now.

Some Scions are modded similar to VIP cars in japan but its still considered a different class of car though.  The way I see it. Kids who can't yet afford a platform car said fuck it and started doing their cheap cars with luxurious style cues and they created a movement.lol

This is not fact just my opinion of how the VIP style scion/kei car came to be.

personally i think ur trying to make something into something that its not. but thats ur choice. i think ppl r just saying its a better idea to look at a better platform to make it a good choice. i also think u should pic a couple of big citys.. i dk how big american cities r in canada, but like new york, las vegas, los angeles  and things like that and paint that on ur hood since that car is american and the cities r american... if thats the car u want to finish
