Vipstyle vs. Yankeestyle..

If I misspelled it my apalogies, however most will already know what I mean. Don't get me wrong though, cuz i'm a fan of lips and offsets too. But at what point are we beginning to crossover into the real wild side of customizing/styling. Just over the past year i realize how exactly this may have transversed in Japan. These are two distinct venues of styling IMO. So my question (deriving from Shanec's ticket thread), At what point are we going over board or crossing over into the next genre? If fitment and stance are the basic foundations, why stray so far from it? I'm sure we all have our own comfort zones and some do not, which is fine but why push so hard? I just want to hear the opinions of others to try and grasp the concenses?

I mean comon, some stuff is ridiculious!!!

a) bosozoku are irrelevant, because it's a culture, not a style
b) in every aspect of everything, people push limits, it's only natural that it happen in American Vip Style

'zoku' in a rough translation means clan or group.

boso, means, well, crazy.

It's also a motorcycle gang thing, not a car thing.

The 'old school' is referred to as Yankee style.

Aug, we've been over this several times before...lol

I'm guessing its going to be a while (read as: eternity) before we start seeing YANKEE (not bosozoku) builds.

That one guy who had the YANKEE exhaust on his Q45 got FLAMED from half the people on this forum when the pics came out :pat:

We are still in the age of +40 offsets and people being scared to roll/shave/pull their fenders. So judging by that i'm guessing it's going to be at least 2-3 years till that is even sort of excepted. We need a few more major builds that head toward that direction before it starts getting embraced.

why push so hard?

Who's pushing? Modding a car some naturally. The car you build is a reflection of the kind of person you are (are you listening knock off guys) and honestly the difference between a crazy gutted track car that you drive on the street and a crazy (literally) sedan that makes people go "WTF??" are NOT as different as everybody thinks.

What do you get when you play it safe? You get 19x8/19x9 +40 with a subtle lip kit and some LED tails, dropped on springs. How much fun is that?

"The devil is in the details"...

That applies most to this style and whil I love the extreme builds seen in Japan or here with various members (widebodyQ, OneTon, and others) I also love the detailed and subdued look that makes you keep staring trying to figure what exactly about that car is so popping that makes it stand out when it looks tame. It's this duality in me that troubles my builds consistently

WTF are you talking about?

There is hardly anybody who is running offsets like that. Go back to CL if you want to bash people for not pushing the limits.

Between Agim, Shane, James, Brandon, the TX guys, Seattle guys, and the rest of the "heavy hitters(LOL)" they've mostly busted the mold for cookie cutter cars. Besides that, this site isn't big, so you don't see too much of the same thing. Get what I'm saying?

If it flows, it goes. That guys Q45 with the YANKEE exhaust, did not flow with the rest of his car. Had he some 15x13's with 50 profile tires, and drove around on the ground, maybe it would have. Get what I'm saying? This isn't defining anything, but it's just saying you can't toss everything together, as conflicting trends don't go well.

That's like putting 24's, body lifted, then a fusa, mod parfume kit, JP exhaust, and calling yourself ScraperJDMVIP awesome. NOT GOING TO WORK.

Augg, do YOU. Not where the trend goes. If you want to Yankee inspire your car, then do it. Throw some crazy ass 16's or 17's, loud gawdy exhaust, and some crazy kit, go for it man!

Dude chill out. You always seem to like to jump on my ass I dunno whats up with that. I don't have beef so whats up with that?

That was said in fun play not seriously I guess that doesn't come across with just words on a page. I'm not bashing anybody for not pushing limits, I guess I worded it the wrong way so to put it a different way: it took a while to break out of the fear of fender rolling and high offsets. We have had a lot of progress in the way of new shit but the gap between where we are now and that kind of stuff is a LONG way off.

As for the Q45 with the exhaust I was talking about the exhaust SPECIFICALLY not the car. There was quite a few comment directed at exhaust alone and that stuck out in my head.

When I say "we need a few more major builds" I don't mean normal Vip car builds, I mean crazy (or boso if you'd prefer) builds that ease people into the style. You can't just spit on it and toss it in there you gotta EASE it in. Ya know what i'm saying??

i don't think any of the vsc builds fall into "yankee" territory. more so just the extremes embodied by vip style. this is how i see things:

Forum image

i think, for better or for worse, everybody is just going more extreme. the us is still sticking to the traditional but taking it to a japan level while japan is going off on some new s**t (that personally i'm not a fan of). honestly my favorite cars these days are company cars that really aren't all that aggressively styled.

but it's really just what you take from vip as a whole and focus on. right now the name of the game on vsc seems to be width and offset and making it happen with whatever means.

to me it's all still vip though... in my humble opinion.

Thats the point I was trying to make. width and offset was ALWAYS the building block but only recently are the majority of builds USING that standard. Which is fantastic because the last 12 months of builds on VSC have impressed me more then the last 5 years. I LOVE how creative people are getting and some of the stuff coming out on here is so impressive that even the japanese VIP magazines are starting to take notice. We went from little squares of pictures to k-break dude holding a RIDES magazine. THATS progress.

Someone should do a crazy yankee build. Or maybe someone already is......

Just to add my 2 cents....I am hoping that people start doing a lot more interior work as seen on a few cars here. I know that isn't part of this question, but I do think that interiors have been the most overlooked portion of US VIP....There are some examples of great interior work, but as a whole I think that it gets over looked here in the states.

Hell, I know that interior is down on my list on the order of mods but if I was doing a full build ($$$ allowing) I would have a full custom interior...

clink clink.

Burgy, interiors are the shit. I'm working on a DIY guide to interiors for VSC to help people along with that. Almost finished I just need to add 2 more things. So much of it is SO easy i'm amazed more hasn't been done. But I think many people just need to SEE that is really IS so easy before they attempt. I bet if people knew you could do all 4 of your door cards in 2-3 hours we'd be seeing A LOT more of it done.

The beauty of VIP is that there is no one way to build a car. You can build the same car 20 different ways and every way can be vip as long as you have a good sense of what you are doing.

It's all good man, your post came across like nobody here cuts into their cars and pushes the envelope....something that everybody on here knows is not true, and really threw me off, wondering what exactly you were talking about.

As far as Yankee builds... like that one xB from socal...it's really gotta stay period correct, maybe cars like (OMG) e39 or e46's could pull them off, or (gasp) older jettas...and the ever classic cressida or OLD celicas. I don't really know...throw up ideas and see what happens right?

that wasn't the point i was trying to make, but whatever works for you.

to me fitment =/= widest, lowest offset wheel. i would rather see a narrower/higher offset with mild camber than a wide/low offset with a gang of camber.

it's cool that cats are pushing the envelope if that's their thing but the numbers game is getting out of hand imo. sure 6" lips are cool, but where are the widebodies and fender mods? broken axle camber just to fit numbers doesn't make sense to me.

personally i am happy to see the tuck and roll making a presence. slam that s**t, tuck that s**t, and roll that s**t.

Touche!

To get it back on track...think of yankee cars as old school 'race inspired' cars. That's what they were modeled after (correct me if I'm wrong) and thats why they have the flares, oil coolers, low/aggressive stance etc. Then it went crazy overboard with the wooden spoilers/bodies on the car, no springs, and wicked exhausts.

To think of it as crossing into from vip style, you'd have to completely change a build. Whereas our style of vip, is low cars, a wide stance, kit, it's not the same as a yankee car.

It's like saying a (honda point of view here) 'jdm' built honda civic, and a 'show car' civic. At what point does your build completely blow up and turn into something completely different? I don't think you can ever really 'cross over' unless you completely change it.

Safe to say, I don't think it can.

Caoboy, that is a very good analogy. I understand now that it is it's own grandpa (to quote that one Tom Arnold movie I forgot the name of) like how a caprice with 22's is not the same as a lifted caprice on 28's with checkered candy paintjob and 6 air horns? One is build to be tight, one is built to say "hey look at me!" and piss people off? I'm guessing the cop's in japan do NOT care for those cars at all. Does anyone know if that statement is correct?

So "period correct" yankee would be cars from the 1980s? Do they specifically have to be from japan? Or is it like drifting rules? (aka no FWD)

Also Elpres though you edited my post and said "there is no boso in this thread" I found this and thought it was interesting. I don't know the validity of it but it certainly would explain how the tuning style came to pass.

this style was actually started by young japanese 'thugs' and their motorbikes. Its called bosozoku. They would make their bikes as loud as possible with very 'visual' modifications and drive them down the city streets very late at night causing havoc. It wasn't long until these 'thugs' grew out of bikes and into cars. The extreme style continued. Eventually they began emmulating the style of cars that the Yakuza (Japanese mafia) would drive with the boso flair, hence why so many older VIP cars are so out there. This style is commonly referred to as Yonkey (said Yankee).

in responese to the above quote:
You missed a critical stage... This style had to come from somewhere for the Yanki/Boso crowd to adopt it, and it came from Japanese racing.

I also remember reading that in the Boso gangs if you are older then 21 (or is it 23??) then you are considered immature so most of the guys get out of it before they are viewed that way. Which would better explain the transition from bikes to cars.

I can't say this enough times...go read Kamikaze Biker. It will explain A LOT to you. The similarity stops there. What you're showing us is nothing new to our eyes and has been said here before on this forum by myself and others. I've had to explain it time and time again..yes, I wanted it stickied, but then we re-did the entire forums. I then did it as a blog on the forums, but due to technical issues it's basically "hidden" in code somewhere.

When you think bosozoku, just think 2 wheels. And don't get a style and a "lifestyle" confused...like I said, read the book.

I can't say this enough times...go read Kamikaze Biker. It will explain A LOT to you. The similarity stops there. What you're showing us is nothing new to our eyes and has been said here before on this forum by myself and others. Dude i'm not saying that boso and it are the same thing. I don't understand why the things I say get taken out of context so constantly. Since its NOT stickied then its probably not SUCH A BAD THING to reiterate here since we have had a influx of new members whose eyes this WOULD be new to. I'm not trying to pretend I know something I don't, i'm trying to get a better understanding of the style and I'm sure others as well would benefit from a little clarification. That is if your statement is address to me, if not then disregard this post

I did a search for "Kamikaze Biker" and came up with ONE post about it, yours I read the post and I think it should absolutely be sticked in VIP 101. Either way I snagged a copy of "Kamikaze Biker" on amazon.com and am looking forward to the read. Thanks for the info

I was speaking in general...hence the reason I didn't quote you or use "^^" before I typed. Like I mentioned, I actually wanted it stickied (since the subject does come up somewhat frequently) with another very informative post that was on the old forums...and then again in the blogs.

I think the reason your words get taken out of context is the delivery. It comes across pompous sometimes, which may not be your intention, but remember that perception can be killer...I used to have a lot of issues with that myself.

^ Gotcha, ya that is NEVER my intention. I think it comes from the disconnect of body language and tone being lost over the internet when it turns into words on a page. I will try and use questions marks and [jokingly] more to avoid confusion. I'm excited to read that book though.

But to stay on track (since I derailed the whole thread) is it cars from the 80's and early 90's only that qualify?

i think, for better or for worse, everybody is just going more extreme. the us is still sticking to the traditional but taking it to a japan level while japan is going off on some new s**t (that personally i'm not a fan of). honestly my favorite cars these days are company cars that really aren't all that aggressively styled.

but it's really just what you take from vip as a whole and focus on. right now the name of the game on vsc seems to be width and offset and making it happen with whatever means.

to me it's all still vip though... in my humble opinion.
