Coilover noob questions

okay so im getting my taxes done and the money should be in by next week"yesss" so i want to order coilovers for my 2000 y33.which ones are the best all around..i will be running 19s once my coilovers arrive and evently air.but 1st i need to make a choice.im trying to decide between JIC VIP FLT-TAR or the insurence ones.both are 15 way damper.but i just dont know enough to make a choice.i see that the jic come with a bushings so u hear no noise or something.i duno im a noob.but nyway which ones are better for installing air and have better dampering or ride quailty.i only want to do this one time.THE RIGHT WAY.I GOT THE $$$

so you want the ones that will better suit when you put bags over them in future i'm guessing?
 
i have Insurance on my 2GS. They have softer spring rates at 10k / 6k for my car, as opposed to something like 14k / 10k (from memory?) on the JICs. 
 
what tis means is, it is likely the valving in the JICs is slightly harder than in the Insurance, in order to match with the harder springs.
 
I can comment on my Insurance Group ones and say with damper at full soft, it is actually a lot softer than stock! with the damper now cranked to around 3/4 hardness, its quite a bit stiffer than stock and is definately bumpier, but rides nicely and hugs the bumps.
 
my Insurance dont really make any noises, and i am also on 19s. occassionaly 1 of the back ones squeeks, but i could probably fix it with some grease somewhere there if i wanted.
 
you'd need to speak to people on air and ask them how it rides, and whether they think they would want harder valving or softer. Personally i reckon the Insurance seems to have plenty of adjustability in the damping, but perhaps JIC may be better since theyre harder valved so may be a bit harder wearing, and also i think theyre rebuildable locally to you in the US.
 
Also check on the shaft diameters

My Aristo has JIC coilovers, not sure what model but i dont believe they are damper adjustable.
 
As Ant said, it depends what you want out of them. IMO the JIC's i have are very comfortable, but wouldnt be ideal for tight wheel fitment. They just have too much rebound in them and with my 19's (8+35 and 9+35) the tyres smash the inside of the metal gaurd over some bumps, especially with other people in the car.
 
Im thinking of going to a set of HKS LS coilovers instead (as long as they go nice and low like the JIC's of course). 
 
So yeh, if you want real tight wheel fitment you will need fairly stiff coilovers, if you want a more comfy ride you wont be able to have the same wheel fitment. Always about compromise, so figure out what you want :)

im running insurance and they ride nice, im rolling arms so of course its a lil stiff....but considering, id say im ok...if you do your homework you can find insurance for about 2200 with no core charge
