How is true "satin" black achieved?

What is the process to make a car satin black?  Can you still wax this paint job?  Is it still clear coated for protection? Is it still going to be smooth or will it be rough to the touch? I keep hearing differant things from Ferrari people saying the paint wont last long yada yada yada, to some Porsche people saying its the best black all the shine with no swirls!  So how is it done?  First a flat paint and then a satin clear?  Or is it all just satin paint?  I also heard it was just wrapped in vinyl stickers?!?  Im looking for this...

its an additive in the clear coat. other than that it is the same as far as i know other than the vinyl wraps.

Would they be able to do the trunk, door, and hood jams with a vinyl wrap?

Ways to get flat black:

Cheap shitty way: Rattle can and a towel

Reversible nice way: Vinyl warp, under $500 if you do it yourself. Will last longer then you'll keep it on the car.  With no skill you can do it yourself but you will NEED a friends help.

Expensive and irreversible way: BASF matte clear that gets sprayed over the car.

Needless to say vinyl is a very good way to go.  The vinyl gives it the flawless sheen and protects the paint AND when you peel it off you have your old color underneath.  You don't wax it you just wash it and dry it off. 

The vinyl can be tricky around some corners but a heatgun fixes that problem.  You can also cut the vinyl on a hard body line and lay a new piece next to it if you have the skill.  You are going to want to do it in a dust free environment but if you can't the trick is to use a micro fiber towel and a spray bottle filled with a water/alcohol mix and just keep spraying/wiping/laying over and over again.

most 'satin' cars ive seen are done with vinyl

actually most are painted, and it is a special satin clear coat.  pretty pricey.  the vinyl is harder than described.  you do use an alcohol water mix if you are good.  if you arent use water soap, will take longer to stick but is more forgiving.  you actually use soap solution stretch, peel back hit with alcohol mix and slap on for a final stick.  problem with black is you can scratch the finish easily.  and i dont know where you can find a satin vinyl.  the black vinyl has a satin LOOK but doesnt look like that ferarri

All base coats are satiny without the clear. If not, it's 'cause it got put on too wet.

its a flattening agent that you mix into the clearcoat when you begin to spray it. it sprays on like regular clear, look like it for, first say 10 mins, then it begins to flatten or loose its gloss... its critical that its sprayed in a high tech spray booth because any dust/rubbish in the paint, you cannot take it out... basically your paint job has to be flawless... you cannot sand and buff is because all it will do is bring the shine back, you cant wax it cuz that'll do the same... so the clear is there to protect. must suck if you get keyed, youll have to respray the whole panel or even the whole car depending on where its keyed...

but you wouldnt even be able to notice if you had orange peel cuz there is no gloss to see it in... f*&$ed up if you make a run cuz youll have to do it all over again...

there is a difference between a flat black, and a satin black... satin is a semi gloss, something like matte black you see on rims. flat black, is well, flat, no gloss what so ever.... satin is the way to go if its going on our type of cars, flat is for hotrods.... i wanted to do my truck satin black but i sold it last week...

Just look and the side mirrors, gap between bumper/body and underside of the middle air dam.

Garage Inc. they do bomb ass work and hear of fatlace.com  that's there sponsored car so always got the new look ..

A while back (like '03-ish) I had my '96 EK hatch professionally painted Satin Black.  I watched the painter do it from start to finish and asked how he got it to look that way. He told me that the color was a GM wheel color that he mixed with the clear, and sprayed it all in one shot (that would be single stage, right?).  It looked identical to the cars in those pics.

i used to work on Hondas. those old Hondas had single stage paint to begin with. that's why it was so hard to feather edge and blend those paints (glad they changed their paint process on newer models). like someone else mentioned, it would really suck to get keyed b/c of the blend process on single stage paints. i'd go w/ a vinyl. if you get keyed, all you have to do is just lay a new piece on the panel (after making sure the panel is sanded smooth first just to be sure you don't see the groove in the panel from the damage)

Ok here's how it goes. There are 3 brands that make the good stuff, however, only 2 are used on exotics typically. 3M, and Avery. The 3M can be difficult to find/buy and there are a few different choices. Avery however is affordable, quality, and available; it also is rated to last 2 years longer then the 3m, being 9 years. However, IMHO, you'll be peelin that shit off in 3-5 when it reaches the apex of played out and goes out of style. Still a few more solid years of "ya thats pretty cool" left though. The difference in truth between the 2 is the same as getting 91 octane at different stations... ya its different, but its the same damn thing.

The only complaint against it is that is "shrinks" on the roll. I don't know what 'shrinks on the roll' means other then a description of the effect from resting my penis on a ice cold dinner roll. Supposedly you lose about %15-20 of it but I haven't been able to find a explanation as to how that happens or if it in fact happens at all. A roll (48"x360") is only $150. I measured my whole GS for it and it came out to need 2.5 rolls assuming I only mess up a few times. I've laid clearbra and done bodywraps before so all my fuck ups have been paid for already.

just use the satin clear on the paint! i just got my roof sprayed matte black and its soo nice. still has a deepness to it, def doesnt look like flat black primer or a crappy vinyl job!

^^^ yeah thats what i was thinking. satin clear gives a nicer finish than a lot of the single stage hot rod flats
