Help Needed: Japan variants of Toyota MX62/63
Aloha, I need some help finding out about the Japan variants of Toyota MX62/63 chassis cars. This is not VIP technically, but I know VSC is the place to ask when you need to find out about Japan variants. I'm doing an old school build, not VIP and none of that crazy stuff, just a clean shakotan build with stance, dish, and nice offset. After I finish the suspension and wheels, I'm going to want to run Japan bumpers and taillights. But I don't know what interchanges, so it's hard to search for stuff on Yahoo jp auctions.
So in the US this is a second generation Toyota Cressida, 81-84 and the chassis code is MX62 or MX63. In Japan there are a bunch of cars that look similar, but I don't know if they are the same chassis as the MX62/63. They got Chasers, Mark II, and Cresta all during the same time period. I'm not even sure what the chassis codes are for these Japan cars, GX71 kinda resembles the front, but I got the feeling thats the same as US MX73's (but with a older style front end).
Anyway, if anyone can help I would really appreciate it. Right now I can't plan anything body wise because I don't know what Japan car I'm looking for. I figure since alot of you guys are into the Japan scene you'll know better than me. Thank you!!

I would think your looking at a Cresta or CHaser. A lil internet search turned up GX71 so that is probably your answer there.

the US cressida is based off of the japanese market toyota mark II sedan. there is also a hardtop variety but the lights, grille, fenders, doors, bumpers are COMPLETELY different so if you're looking to get exterior parts you want the sedan and not the hardtop. the main exterior differences between the mark II sedan and the cressida are the badging obviously, and shorter bumpers on the japanese model. they also came with different motors.
to clear things up here are the different chassis codes:
gx61 - japanese mark II sedan/hardtop, cresta, chaser, 1G motor
mx62 - cressida wagon, 5M motor
mx63 - cressida sedan, 5M motor
gx70 - mark II wagon, 1G motor
gx71 - mark II sedan/hardtop, cresta, chaser, 1G motor
mx72 - cressida wagon, 5M motor
mx73 - cressida sedan, 5M motor
the gx71 front that you're referring to that resembles the 2nd gen cressidas is the early model gx71 cresta front with quad headlights.

Mahalo Krammy-toe, appreciate the help! Using your info, a google image search turned up the closest find yet. I had found ones that looked close, but the GX61 Mark II is the only one with the same exact side window setup. This one also has the same body lines across the board, and the front turn signals under the bumper are almost exactly like the US front end.
Thank you again, this picture is pretty close to what I'm trying to build (except this is a different front end, I'm sticking with the US style 4 individual square headlights).

no problem! i just got rid of both my cressidas, had an 85 factory 5-speed sedan and an 86 wagon. i miss them already but i'm moving on with my gs300. anyway good luck with your cressida, can't wait to see how it turns out. i've always been a fan of the older X chassis toyotas.
