y33 steering wheel radio control with aftermarket?

is there any way to retain the radio steering wheel controls with an aftermarket head unit? or the stock cd changer for that matter? i have no idea how this could be done but it seems like if people are putting aftermarket head units in their 2009 bmws and stuff, they wouldnt just junk the steering wheel controls? hrmm.

any ideas?

there are modules you can buy. go to a local stereo shop and they can explain it.

basically, you program a module that emits an IR signal, just as your remote does from an IR transmitter you mount like an LED within view of your headunit. i put one in my jeep

^ werd, I know that you can do this on the I35 and I was told the same thing that grant mentioned about doing it in the  Y33.

google "swi-jack". essentially, pac parts sells different versions for different head units; they'll work with most of the steering wheel controls out there (except for canbus type cars and some special cases), but since they're universal, you'll have to deal with some aggravating instructions and a confusing programming process.

but hey, even i got it working on my old kenwood, so it can't be that hard, right? =P

oh, and also be prepared to use the controls differently because they don't respond as well as oem. there was a lag.

also, i've heard bad things about the IR emitting ones. if your HU supports it, get a wired one.

oh very cool, i didnt even know they made stuff like this, ive been looking around for a while on the internet and am having a hell of a time understanding what i need to buy / how to install it. i can do headunit installs and whatnot but im not super well versed in car audio.

the headunit is a panasonic CQ-VW100U double din, i couldnt find anything specific to panasonic headunits, so im guessing that you just buy this swi-jack unit, wire it into the stereo harness, and hope that itll program correctly according to the manual? sound basically like what i need to do? haha.

looks like they don't have anything specifically for a panasonic double din, but you can always call their tech support and ask. they're pretty helpful.

otherwise you can get aftermarket controls which sorta attach on, thats the easiest way

the stock steering wheel control on a y33 suck anyway. well at least mine does... why they hell did they put a scan up, but not a scan down??!?
