Oldskool japanese fenders

I'm fabbing them out of metal but I can't for the life of me picture how the template would look when its flat. Can someone with MS paint draw me a rough outline of how those look on a piece of paper?

The remind me of the old 70's mercedes SLC race car. I love the look for my project, except mine won't be covering skinny little wheels like on the chaser. =)

I'm going measure them and make them perfect I just have no idea how the template should look to start. Thanks!

Or are they riveting a piece of metal to the car then rolling the fenders??

as for those flares, i had bolt on flares on my old S13. not as big as those but same idea. on a bit of paper they'd look sort of like a crescent moon, like two arcs one a bit smaller than the other tapering to a join. or tapering smaller at least with a flat (like the ones on the top car above)
 
as for how they attach them, you could rivet them, or what i did is use nutserts which are like a threaded insert. you drill holes in your metal guard,then get a gun like a rivet gun for nutserts and it clamps up the nutsert to the guard, and it has a thread in it. i used 10mm nutserts which had i think a 6mm thread. Then you just screw in some spring washers and allen-drive cap screws to hold them on. you will need like a rubber seal too to fill the edges. i got them moulded on but they started to crack where they joined.
 
as for the stock guard underneath, the best bet is to cut it all out as close up to the top edge of the flare as you can, so that theres really as much room under there as it appears. otherwise your wheel sits in the extra arch flare, but then cant tuck cause the stock metal guard is there. it may even pay while doing the metal work to try and pull your standard guards a bit even so they arent so flat allowing the wheel to go up under ok, depending how big the flares are.

No probs Green Grundel but just quietly, i also was like wats this authorization code shit, so i just put in the name of the forum in there auszoku and it worked ;)
 
edit - that link is a good one, that guy's car is pretty wild. He refers to 'rivet nuts' that is also another name for 'nutserts'. but maybe rivet nuts sounds like it makes more sense so you may have more luck using that term!

I think somewhere on there they post links to pre-made fiberglass over-fenders that are universal. But since you're fabbing your own you wont need that. I'm pretty sure the stock fenders are cut once the over-fender is made, thats how they can get the car dropped that low with such wild offsets.

Ya typically you cut the fenders and leave squares you fold up and weld into place but the mercedes metal is so thick i'm going to just have cut it out and fab a sheetmetal guard to seal it all up.

My biggest issue is going to be making it so I can still open my rear doors. I have a few ideas so we'll have to see. Those plastic fenders at 2MM don't seem very thick at all. I'll have to try it out and see how it goes but i'm not getting my hopes up.

They build some custom glass one's on Muscle Car Tv on PowerBlock on spike a while back! It was cool as shit... Ill try and find a link. They did it on their project Mustang

muscle car and all the other shows on the powerblock tv dont relate to the vip scene but they sure are fun to watch and have some good ideas and info... oh and also check out Gears and Speed... great show

Ya all great shows. I love muscle cars, especially rats and 30's rods. American muscle is the reason my benz is going to be able to move, cause it sure as hell isn't german overengineering.

That mustang has the same tires I used to have. Judging by the sharpie in that guys hand i'm guessing ~6 inches. According to the wheel offset calculator my tires will stick out 5.7" which is not a big deal for flares i'm running (in fact if they didn't stick out that much it probably wouldn't look right) if that mustang has the same amount of poke then I am even more confident about this build. you could buy ZG fenders to achieve that look. Search around on google.
