12" sub into the stock 8"

i need to know and make sure this is possible.

I have a kicker comp 12 inch sub sittin around that i need to put to use. My idea is to cut the stock 8 inch hole further until it can fit the 12. I would then put an amp into the trunk connected to that sub.

Is this possible?

I've been wanting to do it for a hell of a long time.

Anything is possible. If it isnt a free air sub, it wont make much difference and thats only if you are amplifying it anywho...

im guessing your talking about putting it in that silver gs.
its very possible but youll run into a couple problems
you need a free air sub,
Or you need to mount the sub and fiberglass a pod underneath using that as a box. idk if theres clearance room, i know in Q45s you cant cause we have a gas tank right there.
either way you should dynamat and reinforce that rear deck because cutting it plus bolting up a heavy sub that is going to cause flex usually isnt the best idea.

oh i just reread and missed that you had a kicker comp. that probably only needs about 1.25 cubic feet so u can easily just build a pod n seal it under the sub and port it into the car interior. if you leave it sealed it wont have as much impact it will just vibrate the rear window and deck like crazy.

go to www.diyma.com and read about running your subs "IB" or "infinite baffle", which is another term for "free air".

jaynick: i think building a ported box under neath it might be the best way and it doesnt sound too hard. I just dont want it vibrating the rear glass too much.

well if you dont want rattle itll be hard. need a bunch of dynamat and seal all the corners with silicone or buy make up pads and cut them like a pizza and insert the wedges all over around where the window touches the rear deck and c pillars.
the more you can reinforce that back deck the less noise youll get. id dynamat both sides of the rear deck and maybe even slap fiberglass or something.

1) the site i s diymobileaudio.com

and

2) free air is not the same as infinite baffle, although the terms are frequently used intarchangably and incorrectly

---

cutting up the rear deck for a ho hum sub like a kicker comp is not a great idea.

kicker comps aint too good in free air apps, and building a box takes too much room and work for something to just go boom. I guessing you wanted to free air it so you don't take up trunk space, so building an enclosure is not a great idea. If you are interested in free air subs, a few of the companies I know are releasing free air type subs...

theres quite a few ib compatible subs on the market. sticking with a drop-in 8" will bring your quality options down to just a couple that i know of.

image dynamics id8 and dls oa8 come to mind.

deadening and completely sealing off the trunk will be mandatory in an infinite baffle setup. should take care of your rattling concers as well.

most 8's don't cost much. you can get an id8 for about 120, maybe less unauthorized.

do you really want to cup up your deck to put in a sub that will sound like s**t over a hundred bucks? aint no turnin back from that. then your option is going to be buildin a box and you'll spend a lot of the difference on materials, more if you pay someelse to do it.

do your thing, but my advice is do nothing before you do something half a** and regret it.

this is that thing about cutting corners.

you don't have to install a sub, but using what you have is not going to do you any good. i can personally guarantee it will sound like s**t because it was not intended for infinite baffle/open air use. ib/oa subs need to have a certain set of parameters to work well. why cut up your car to do something that sucks?

if you really want it in your car use it how it was intended and get a box. i would recommend a cheap, pre-fab, sealed box of appropriate volume. doing/spending a whole lot to accommodate that sub is like an ugly b***h in prada. doesn't matter how you dress it up, it is what it is.

it's your car, so do what you want. i am just trying to keep you from making what i know to be a mistake.

in answer to the original question it is physically possible but hoping for any resemblance of par performance is expecting the impossible.

well infinite baffle is highly regarded for it's sound quality but like i said; you need a sub built with certain qualities to work. high qts, low fs, vas no more than 1/4 of the trunk volume, etc. it's a science.

in addition to the driver there are things that need to be done install wise to get the best sound (= +$).

if it was an 8" i would say throw it in, no harm done. even a 10" could probably be hung with some custom adapters, but a 12" probably won't happen without major mods and i don't think it's worth it in this scenario.

subs arent as easy as everyone thinks to do right, If your going to be getting in to subs and custom fiberglass work to make them fit a hacked up 8 inch opening I am going to have to agree with B.O.B on this that if you spend some money and do it right it will sound much better and if you just cut up your stock locatin stick a kicker comp 12 in its gonna be a downgrade more than anything. if you buy a quality 8 inch and make sure it has the right air space and is powered correctly it will sound better than a 12 not set up right. and if your trying to do a vip car you shoild pay attentionto your set up and not try to go on the cheap side I am not saying spend a ton of money but an open air 8 inch sub will sound much better than the kicker shoved in and not boxed right.

i can tell you from personal experience...mounting a 12" sub in the stock location regardless of box or no box will sound like shit...IMHO.

i can put you on to a dls dealer that hooks it up fairly nice. id is cheapest bought from woofersetc.com most of the time. there are some other options but those are just the ones that pop into my head instantly.

not only will mounting a non-free-air sub into the stock location sound like shit, but it will also damage the subwoofer.

the excessive airspace may allow excessive cone excursion, resulting in premature failure.

free air subs suck. even the expensive nice ones (which your kicker is NOT) still sound like poo compared to a good decent sub in a sealed box.

i wont beat a dead horse and tell u how horrible it will sound. if you cant listen to everyone elses warnings then u need to do it yourself so u learn the hard way. im the same way sometimes.

i would suggest a small sealed box for that sub. it will sound really good and really musical. if you want a lot of output then put it in a ported box.

if you cut up the rear deck u can kiss your sub, part of your car, and a few man hours of work goodbye. it will kill all three.

and for the record.. stereo shops, like the one i work at, can sell u a box for that sub for around $50 or so. go check em out and save the headache.
