No Muffler + Smog = No problem???

Im due for a smog.  i have eliminated both mufflers but kept all the cats and restrictors.  Is it true that the mufflers are only there for the sound?  My V8 sounds deep and not loud so it should pass in the sound department.  but is it still putting out clean air to pass smog?  i really dont want the trouble to put my stanky mufflers back on. thanks dudes!

yeah bro.. mufflers have nothing at all to do with helping the smog output...they are just for sound.... don't worry about it bro... Y.T.

i dont know about that. regardless of sound or not CA is one of the most restrictive states when it comes to smog. your better off talking  to a test center

dont forget, we also have the Visual inspection u need to pass that too.

well mufflers have nothing to due with emissions... at all..... end of story...... but I can't tell you about the Visual inspection.... It really all depends on if the guy or girl doing the test is a dick or not

yea guys i have no mufflers at all and I actually had lower emissions than before hahaha as long as you have your cats your good to go

What I remember....anything you do after the cat is fine.   Completely legal SMOGwise.  Soundwise is different story and has nothing to do with SMOG.    I think its also a law that the tailpipe has to exit out the rear...and not the sides of the car...like behind the front tires or whatever.

Never had a problem with aftermarket exhausts.   I just had problems with engine modifications and timing.

being a smog tech myself, u should be okay...   i pass em all day, i gives a shit bout that as long as theres a cat...  but there are fools out there that r assholes that will find anything to fail u on.. those r the nervous ones thats scared of the B.A.R..

Why? Because I had no mufflers. At all. 
 
I had taken off my mufflers, and was doing a custom bumper and was going to put a 'turndown' like old school cars, after the resonators.
 
A friend of mine, who own's a smog shop, said it will fail the visual, and he wouldn't be able to pass me until I put them on. 
 
I asked him if it matters if I just ran piping out with tips and he said "You need to have a complete exhaust system, including mufflers. Doesn't matter if it's just a canister muffler (like the classic Apexi mufflers) but you need a muffler."
 
That being said, in CA, you need a muffler. If you just have tips, you might get away with it on a  don't ask don't tell policy.

I usually ask the tech to do a visual b4 I pay and make sure it'll pass. It all depends on the smog tech though. 

It's cool when they use their own gas cap too. I'd hate to go through the whole test and fail cuz of a gas cap.

your friend is super anal, ive taken mine to about 3 different places just straight pipes and ive NEVER gotten any flak

Your car looks like it has mufflers dude! LOL I had NO mufflers remember? Besides, he even said that basically if you have tips, and don't mention anything it'll pass. Mufflers help out with a bit of back pressure (chambered ones at least) and quiet the car. That's it. Mine were half hanging off anyways so I shouldn't have passed since I had an 'exhaust leak'.

Your in ur SD just go to San Ysidro, 50$ extra bucks you pass smog...

On the E30 I had nothing but straight pipe after the cat, it was loud as hell but I still passed with flying colors.
