air suspension or coilovers

how is it going guys?

i have an 03 galant, and it's about that time and i am thinking of either going with coilover's or air suspension. 

just wanted to get everyone's opinion on which would be the best to go with, as i would like it siting lowere than she is now with tein s tech springs figure about 1.5-2.0 drop

I am unconvinced about air suspension, so i went with coilovers first. If i want airsus later on i will buy some Universal Air Aerosport bags to slip over my coilover struts. That way i can have max adjustability and also if a bag pops i can wind the perch up to get me home (instead of having to leave the car on the side of the road or something)

Also, it helps that my coilovers cost me only a little more than a set of lowering springs... ;)

1. Air = Comftorbale ride and more flexable to road conditions, slam it when you need to raise when you need to
2. Coilovers + Stiffer ride and more performance , For someone who really knows his roads and is a slammed Die hard kinda guy
3. Shocks + just cant afford or justify the above.

airover (air bag on coilover strut/sleeve) = dope. way more adjustable than just bags or just coilovers.

so this airover is it as simple as buying a coilover set and airbags to put together or is it more intricate and specific to a type of coilover.

That depends on you and your knowledge. It could be simple...it could be rocket science. 

From what Universal Air said, it sounds like less work than installing a universal air strut, but more work than installing coilovers or a model-specific air setup.

Someone from UniversalAir was on this forum answering questions about it before, and viplife did it on his Q. As with most things custom it involves a little work (viplife ended up notching his lower perches to get clearance for the air inlet tube; UniversalAir guy said to get a cylindrical spacer to sit between the perch and the bag) but it seems to be pretty generic. The bag itself is designed to replace the springs on a conventional spring strut, so it can be used on a coilover too.

UniversalAir also sells a specific coilover bag that is meant to go WITH the coilover spring. But its twice the price of the aerosport bags, and i'm not convinced it would be a better deal

hmm... i remember the one thread about the air/coilover strut.

i know with the coilover's that i was looking at they had an adjustable dapener for a more comfortable ride but i'm still debating on the airride, however the air/coilover sounds like a really good idea

It mainly depends on the car. If you have coilovers its easy, they just slip up and over. However if you have your factory struts there will be some modification to the strut to accept the bag. The main reason why we have designed the system this way is to have an affordable design (universal across the board) and allow for multiple choices of shocks/coilovers.

It is generic in the sense that its not specifically designed per car. They are designed around being the coil replacement. Our coil-over bag setup is designed for the offroad market coil-overs. For onroad with coilovers there isn't much room inside the strut tower to have a coil and a bag. 

You will also need to trim the coilover ring to accomodate the 7/8" fitting that screws into the bag...universal air also uses 1/2" lines...a bit more difficult to run that say airrunner lines due to the thickness and less flexibility...

Putting our bag ontop of an adjustable coil-over dampener is by far the best choice.  Adjustable height, drop and adjustable dampening.

No with the coilover you just adjust the stock spring nut down and 90 deg out of the bag. We typically run the 1/2 lines through the car for the air system speed. however we can setup for what ever size line you want.

sorry dude...not following you...but anyhow...for the G35 we did...we had to notch out a section of the coilover ring...

Thanks Zack, I was wondering why the coilover in the pic looked so long!

I'll try to dig up a pic that Viplife posted showing where he had to notch his lower ring. Do you have a pic of the setup you described above? "you just adjust the stock spring nut down and 90 deg out of the bag"
