Usually we refrain from having a thread like that due to a lot of newbs then reciting stuff like as if it's law and trying to act like they know it all.... (trust me we've had it happen), for some more insight into the beginnings of VIP you have to understand the circumstances under which the culture was created. Who started the it? Japan hahahahaha of course that's the general answer more specifically? well there in lies the can of worms some claim it was Taketomi, others the hoodlums emulating the Yakuza bosses, others will delve deeper and mention the Black Cockroaches or Black Roaches ...whatever.... it all falls under the same category as the chicken and the egg.

VIP is definitely interpreted differently by everybody and there isn't a real stone hard definition of the VIP style.

IMO, I think VIP style cars originated from Euros. Just my .02.

vip wasn't "started", it evolved into a style from other walks of life. Some were influences to the style like the Super Silhouette GT cars (which helped influence the OG aggressive style and the Yankee cars totally emulated them) and euro style (which influenced the more recent clean styling of vip). There's far to many facets of the style to pinpoint what is what, some of the genres of the style are still popular to this day. You'll get so many people disagreeing on this topic...it's almost pointless. You should concentrate your efforts into creating what you like and what you'd like to build. All of this is more like guidelines than rules, build what you like, but do it right...

There's a good explanation of the history of VIP (well at least of the media covering VIP) in the Vip Car X coffee table mook. Well at least thats what i remember thinking when i read it a couple of years ago. But i have misplaced my copy... I do remember something about Young Auto featuring a Y31 Cima which was by today's standards very mildly modded with BBS rims etc

But lets not let that get in the way of a good mystery ;)

If I remember correctly I did hear something about Young Auto being the first to feature what was considered a VIP car back in the day. Supposidly the Owner of Junction Produce was one of the Pioneers in the industry/design but he isn't the end all be all. Finding the history of VIP is like finding the history of drifting. One man is credited for something that he saw others doing. He just decided to go further with it so he reaps the rewards.
