UCF 20 UAS install

First off, I want to say thanks to Will and Brian @ PGmotoring.  Great guys to deal with, and the support from UAS was awesome as well.  I will do my best to document the installation of the UAS kit on my 97 LS400.  First, here is what I started with-suspension is L-sportline springs on stock shocks with MRR HR3's 20 x8.5 and 20x9.5:

Here are some of the parts laid out-intimidating at first...Also here is a basic rundown of most of the additional installation parts you will need:

at least 100 feet of 18 gauge wire (i used double stranded copper brown sleeved wire)
20 feet of power wire (i used 4 gauge as I will be running a system later)
Fuse holder for power wire
Lots of zip ties to tie up the air lines/wiring
Electrical tape
about 15 Spade connectors (i used the "covered" ones)
Basic electrical tools (test light, stippers, crimpers, etc.)
Suspension tools-spring compressors, breaker bars, wrenches, vice, hammer, etc.
Cutting tools-air cutter, air chisel, air gun, etc.
Dremel (many uses)
Pack of self tapping screws
Teflon Tape
Patience :)

The best advice i can give is to do it a piece at a time.  Assemble the parts first, then do the mounting, wiring, air line running, etc.  I did this all over a period of 1.5 weeks (one task per night)-to make sure I didnt rush the job.  Here is one front valve assembled

To mount the tank and compressors-I drilled through both the carpet, and the floor liner directly below it.  It holds everything pretty sturdy believe it or not.

The first step I did was to mount the rear solenoid to the car and wire it up.

The only place I found to comfortably mount it was right behind the rear subframe on the swaybar.

Then i ran the air lines into the trunk.  If you lift up the spare tire surrounding carpet, you will see two grommets-this is where i ran the line through along with the wiring.

I then ran the front line from the tank (other side) through another grommet in the trunk up on top of the subframe comming out of the passenger side of the car.

Here you can see it a little better-these lines are VERY easy to kink.  If you kink it when trying to run it, carefully unkink it and rerun it if neccesary.  Be careful because a kink means little or no air will get through...

I then ran it above the resonator heat shield and through the factory plastics (by the frame rails).  To remove the plastics, there are 6 10 mm bolts holding them in-they come off in two pieces.

I ran the line all the way to the front, where I place the "t-splitter" on the line.  From here, one line will run to the passenger side valve, and the other will run to the drivers side valve.

then through the engine bay wrapping around the antifreeze reservoir through the passenger side wiring hole.  Here is where it comes out under the passenger fender:

From there, i removed the passenger fender liner (only front half) and mounted the brackets for the front valve:

Here is where I ran into a dilemma.  I didnt want to run the drivers side line through the engine bay-because it gets too hot and I am afraid it may eventually damage the line.  So what I did was run the line along the rack and pinion on the subframe-across to the other side.  At points, it runs close to the oil pan-so I wrapped in some extra heat shielding just in case.  From there, i ran the line in between the subframe and the wheel well rail-i had to bend it out a bit for it to fit in there with a pry bar.

Here is a better idea of where it is on the drivers side-drilled two holes (one pictured by the brake line)-to run a zip tie through and hold the line up.

From there i mounted the drivers side valve.  Its a tight fit in there due to a plastic box being under the front fenderwell.  I use a combination of one bracket with bolts and nuts and a clamp to hold it securely in place.

Now onto the wiring.  I ran the passenger side front wiring over to the drivers side through the front bumper.  Then I proceeded to hook up the power wire.  I ran it into the space behind the headlight

From there i used the dremel to expand the space so the cover would fit back on.

I then ran the power wire and the valve wiring for both sides into some split loom tubing and proceeded to make my way to the back of the car.

Then i removed the drivers side brake/fuel line covers and ran the wiring into there (had to cut a hole)

Run it all the way back-over the resonator heat shield and over the rear subframe just like the passenger side air line.

Then run the wires through the grommet on the drivers side that you have the rear valve wiring running through

i then pulled the trunk lining back and followed the wires into the rear of the car-this is where the valve wiring will go to the switchbox

I ran the power wire into a distro block and then out to the relays.  Here you can see where i tapped into the 12v switched power from the antenna harness  Yes-i did use speaker wire...temporary as i didnt have enough 12 gauge wiring around.

switchbox brain mounted up- i dont have a pic, but i ran the switch under the carpet out through the AC vent under the seat.  From there the box runs to the drivers seat/center console area.

ok, now the hardest parts are done-that was what took me a week and a half working on each bit per day (yes i still drove the car in between it all).   Here is the easier part-well maybe not easier, but more straight foward.  Remove your shocks and then your springs from the shock using a spring compressor.  Then take the shock in your hand and you will have to cut off the top collar using your cutting tool.

Next, you will have to modify the top plate.  Drill out the 6 holes connecting the cup onto the top plate

Here is where my air chisel came in handy-use it to remove the cup.  You can do this with a hammer and chisel-but plan on being there for a while.

Now, you have to cut the spring perch for the line to come through.  I cut two slits, and then hammered down the middle so the air line does not rub on bare metal and get punctured.

Now assemble the airbag onto the top and bottom plates, along with the air fitting and mount onto the shock.

The rears are the same with the exception of an extra piece of rubber on the top plate.  This can be easily removed by prying it off.

What i would suggest is that after you are finished wiring and mounting up your switch brain-air up the compressors/tank and test each valve.  If you notice air coming out of any valve all the time-then you have it backwards(ask me how I know)-i had a rear valve backwards.  The compressors would never shut off-as no air pressure would build because the air would come out of the dump valve.  Make sure this is right before you install the bags and cant get the car in the air like me...the jack was stuck under the car and all!  Once i place the valve correctly, all was well.

Now onto the finished product-aired up to the max (about 1 inch higher than stock i think)

Here is a great link that helped me out a bunch when doing my suspension.  Its a link to videos of UAS japan where they did a UCF20 like mine.  I didnt follow exactly the same, but it gave me a great idea of many things.  [url]http://www.universalair-jp.com/top.html[/url]

You will also notice that in the videos, they knock out the spring perch-but i chose not to do that as I didnt want the car that low since I cant get it that low due to 20 inch wheels.  I figured i may need to get it higher-if you knock out the spring perches, i think you can get about 1/2 inch lower all around on the correct wheels.

Another note of advice-use your head and be logical.  Try to keep the lines and wires away from heat and tie everything out of the way.  You dont want a line bursting as you will be stuck.  Drop the car once or twice to make sure the lines dont rub-remember-EVERYTHING moves when the car goes up and down, including the lines.  I had to redo a few as I noticed they would rub.  I have only had the bags in two days as of writing this-i will check and recheck everything later this week to ensure all is well.  Frequent checks are the key to making sure everything is reliable and well.

Thanks for the comments-the hose clamps were the only alternative I had short of making and welding custom brackets/mounts.  They hold strong, and are easily removable (i had to remove the rear valve assembly already to fix my backward valve!).  The wiring will be replaced with 12 gauge wire where the speaker wire is (that was to get it up and running that day).

Also-i will get some side profile shots-but my wheels are not pushed out like many others-they tuck into the well.  I like the tucked look, but i really like the "poked" look as well-but I am worried about spacers...i was thinking about the 25 mm ichiba's, but I'm scared for my wheel  bearings.  I will also have to roll if i go that route...not sure what I want to do with it as of yet...but as they say-you have to "pay to play".

Nice write up. How much does all the gear cost?

the kit was $2050 shipped-with the basic extras (wiring, etc) i would add another $100 or so onto it.  I did the install myself, so I saved some extra money there-I hear its between $1000-1500 for installation.

Many thanks for the information. Installation costs for me are moot as I am being sponsored by my workshop. I will most certainly look towards where you got your stuff from as I really need an air setup to complete my project.

I think I'm going to go with 25mm spacers to bring it out a bit-I still want the wheels to tuck-but I also want them out a bit.

one question for you.. I have been asked to install UAS kits into these lexus's and i have heard that the bags rub the arms and have been turning down these installs becuase of that problem.. I would hate to see you run into this problem. 
 
 before you put the wheel on, did you jack up the suspension to check clearance with that arm that goes to the spindle.

Very good point about the arm hitting the bag on the install.  I just went out and checked, the bag has VERY minimal clearance on the drivers side, and the passenger side looks to be a little less clearance, possibly even "kissing" the arm on FULL deflation (cant get my head under there to take a look for sure).  This shouldn't be a problem even if it does kiss as the back of that arm is rounded (no sharp edges), and only kisses (if it does) on FULL deflation.  I cant even move the car that low-so with the minimum  height required to drive the car, it does not rub at all and has more clearance.  Aired up, there are no wear marks on the bags-or even contact marks where the arm would hit.  I will find out for sure when I pull the front wheels off.  If anything looks different, I will let you guys know.

Thanks man... let me know more.. I guess its like what other are saying that if you drive low it will prob rub but if you drive higher it should clear.

The rears are now spaced out with 25mm Ichiba V2 spacers.

I did the front as well with 25 mm spacers...but the tire hits the fender on deflation so I had to take them back off...once I get some stretched tires i should be good...

I have independent wheel control....not a necessity for me to use it-i use the front/rear most of all...

then you arent low enough on air.
