rack and pinion leaks...(may cause power steering pump to fail)
distributor may leak onto alternator which causes it to fail..
lower ball joint maybe shady there was a recall on it..

My brother has one of these. The cars are getting older; most of these "concerns" aren't necessarily
issues specific to the 1GS, they could happen to any high-mileage car. But from what I've seen:
Steering rack leaks
Loose trim at B-pillar (noisy)
Lower ball joints
Instrument cluster needles fail, or partially fail
Oil filter housing O-ring leaks
Front & rear main seal leaks
Transmission failures (my brother's car has 168K and works fine - change the trans fluid often)
Cracked exhaust manifold(s)
Wind noise from lower windshield area
Faded headlights
Starter failure
The 2J engine is quite robust.
Also, check operation of interior power window switches, radio electric antenna, trunk and hood shocks (these get weak), and for warped brake rotors (pulsating brake pedal). And inspect the interior wood panels for cracks. The center piece (around the shifter) is typically cracked, but an aftermarket company makes a nice-looking overlay for this.
This is probably the prettiest of the three generations of GS cars, in my opinion.
Especially when they are tastefully modified!

oh yeah.. i totally forgot.. but the sc and gs cars of these years
always have messedup needles on the instrument cluster for some
reason.. its almost without fail that it will be messedup.
and the window molding around EVERY door window is messedup as well
they get all wavy from the pressure of the car(when the door closes) over time.

Most of the main ones have been mentioned.
Another common one is the brake master cylinder leaking into the cabin down the pedal. Check that, and the fluid level.

so do you think it is worth it to buy one? i found a white one that i really like and it has the jdm front bumper fresh paint and clean interior but i dont want that to distract me from a shitty motor .. it has 180k mileage on it is that good?
