Wow... Those sushi rolls are... interesting looking. Its like the Delux Super Supreme with Anchovies on top; sooo many toppings on each roll.
I suppose Australia is the same; we throw avocado and salmon into just about every sushi roll to make them appeal to people that would be scared to try something different
I believe sushi should be about the fish, contrasted with the vinegared rice, hint of wasabi and a dab of soy sauce (only the fish should touch the soy dipping plate, dipping the rice absorbs too much).
Certainly looks like you cleaned them out though.

Agreed.
Still looks delicious.
I like the Vegas rolls and Philadelphia rolls.
But I rather be at a Kaiten Sushi joint over any place in the US. $1.00 Sushi? Yes please.

$20 for all u can eat also includes Nigiri-sushi, Maki-sushi, Sashimi and appetizers.
Ya, all the rolls seem the same, most of the ones I get have EeL, Crab and Shrimp in them.
I like the crunchy tempura on top with sweet black eel sauce, that dark sauce is the bomb!

That doesn't look real appealing to me to eat that much of it at once, but I bet it does taste pretty good.
I think I see Salmon, Tuna, Albacore, octapuss, whats the rest of it?
It's crazy how americanized sushi has gotten. I like going to the hohokam plaza on Priest and University here in Tempe, AZ every once in a while and buy there authentic sushi platters in the japanese market. That place has some crazy dishes with all sorts of weird stuff like small dried baby fish, sponge looking squares cubes of who knows what, fresh eel, etc.

All of that plus Tilapia. Usually get a large fillet of eel but didnt last night. All of it is fresh sashimi grade fish from Ujajimia(sp) market in Downtown Seattle.
I lOVED going over to Hohokam when I went to ASU!!!
I am not the biggest fan of rice with my sushi unless I am craving some rolls. A huge plate of sashimi with a little soy sprinkled on some Wasabi is ideal in my books.

Sushi
must have rice with it. Otherwise its just Sashimi.
I do prefer the look of your platters over the 'creations' in the first post though (i prefer more fatty salmon and tuna though - thats where the flavour is at)
Just a tip: if you see "Korean BBQ" next to sushi at a restaurant, then the owner/chef is probably Korean. Koreans often learn how to cook Japanese food and serve them next to their own food; it almost never happens the other way around...

Good observation. Those hybrid/fusion rolls with all the sauces and extras in the first post can only be found at Korean (or non-Japanese owned) sushi joints...you won't find any of those in a true Japanese sushi bar.
$20 for all variety at an all-you-can-eat place is a great deal .

good lord that's beautiful...however those kind of places that decorate like a mofo are very expensive. Did you do the thing where the chef just gives you whatever he feels like you'll enjoy? I think its called omakase? In these two pictures the first one is probably Toro but the second...what is it? looks like really marbalized beef...kobe beef?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omakase
To the OP... $20 is a VERY good deal for dinner. There is no place in SoCal that cheap with that much roll/sushi selection. I don't even know how they turn a profit selling so cheap unless wages/rent/goods are cheaper then here in SoCal. If this was a lunch price then I can see a profit. Keep going before they raise prices!
My restaurant the prices are 17.95 lunch and 22.95 dinner. I do more business at dinner anyday even with the price being higher. Not many people can afford to eat a $20 lunch but in my area I guess people can...lol
What baked roll was that? Can't see anything with the sauce covering everything...

Suppose, you gotta do it once in your life. Probably cheap compared to the good sushi places in Japan.
I remember we used to go to this tiny little sushi bar with my 2 host parents, eat a modest amount of Sushi (8-9 plates?) and come out with a $400 bill. And this was a place that could only sit about 7-8 people; the outside had no special signs and it certainly wasnt famous. But the sushi was incredible... I couldnt stand the sight/smell of seafood until i ate sushi there - now i love it!

Yea, Urasawa is exactly the same. There's only 9 seats in the bar. You need at least 3 weeks advanced notice to try to get a reservation and it's only open for dinners.

I gotta be honest, the original pictures just looked like overload. I think less is more when it comes to sushi. I've been to places that have those crazy multiple topping rolls and whatnot, they usually have lesser quality fish and smaller cuts. I guess thats OK, but its not as good as the real japanese places. The real deal places here in Hawaii are just straight forward. Last night I had Hamachi Nigiri (2pc) at one of my spots and it was $8 (Super Good tho!!). Nothing on top, no sauces. Just a dip in the regular mix of Shoyu and Wasabi, the Fish and the Rice. Usually when I order at the good places I like to order the Chirashi. At this place I goto the Chirashi is also Omakase style, something exotic and new every time I try it.
The thing that tripped me out the most about this thread. Someone mentioned Talapia? WTH?? :pat:

they'd be out of business unless it's $50+ per person. ACtually come to think of it there is one in Los Angeles but you are limited to certain types of fish.

Damn, I always get jealous when I hear about Sushi places that have an "all you can eat" for $20!! Thats about £16...To put it into perspective, at my favourite sushi restaurant in central London, you can get 3 pieces of o-toro nigiri. (marbled tuna).
The cheaper places such as Yo Sushi!, cost about £4 for 4 pieces of fish roll.

Actually Takamatsu
does have SASHIMI on the menu, but for the all-u-can-eat it's limited (1 order) per customer and they have Tuna, Yellow Tail and Chirashi to choose from, normal menu pricing has it at $12-$15 so it must be pretty good. They also have a ton of Nigiri to choose from, I like the sweet shrimp and fresh water Eel.
I always just get the rolls because they taste better IMO and I actualy requested extra sauce and tempura on top, thats why in a couple of the pics on the bottom look really loaded with toppings and you can barely see the rolls :)
I'm gonna have to try some of that sashimi though, the normal price for it is $13-$18.50, If I just do (1) order of sashimi and a roll that pays for the all-u-can-eat :P
they'd be out of business unless it's $50+ per person. ACtually come to think of it there is one in Los Angeles but you are limited to certain types of fish.
Actually Takamatsu does have SASHIMI on the menu, but for the all-u-can-eat it's limited (1 order) per customer and they have Tuna, Yellow Tail and Chirashi to choose from, normal menu pricing has it at $12-$15 so it must be pretty good.
You had all that in 1 sitting?!?!??! ALONE? My brother in law owns one of the hottest sushi joints in town and his all-you-can eat sushi menu is $15/person. Maybe it seems cheap to you guys, but remember our average annual income is only $1500/year here..... to put it into perspective....

I got to give it up to ZENKO SUSHI for putting up with a big party in a small place. The fish is fresh and the owners were great!
