who works on their own car.???

ok i was wondering how many people in here work on there own car...there are poeple who pay someone to do there build....and theres nothing wrong with that.!!! i was wondering who in here gets there hands dirty...

Most should get their hands dirty...especially the novice to intermediate stuff.....expert you really have some schooling or experience before attempting....   Also I notice the most problem with people working on their own cars is improper tools.  Tools are expensive but can last you a lifetime if you buy the right ones and save headaches.

i have learned to invest in the right tools....and they will never let yah down....

i do a lot of work maintaining my car but there are some things best left to the pros

i work on bmw's for a living .. so when it come to working on my own car .. i just do the basic stuff, car is still under warranty till the end of the year .. so once that is up, then ill be doing a lot more .. just sucks bringing tools home from work

I do everything on my own except paint, welding, or engine/trans rebuilding. I don't have skills when it comes to those things ...:pat:

i do everything by myself. im a mechanic at a hotrod shop and i just bring my car to the shop on the weekends. tools ARE expensive, i will probably have my house paid off before my snap-on account.......:sad:

I have a place that will do all the mechanical work on my cars in return for interior work on their cars. I do all my own body and interior work.  The only external work I don't do is cutting and welding metal like my fenders.

I think a good portion of our community or at least most of the more experienced members do their own work or most of it anyhow.

we do our own work around here.... unless when it comes to alignments, wheel mount and balance and stuff like that.

I try to do everything on my own but paint/body and tire mounting.

I dont do tire mounting or the actual spraying of paint.   I installed 90% of my parts from body panels to seats and sub boxes.  The ironic part is that I dont change my own oil or rotate my own tires.   Can I?  Yes.   Is it sometimes easier and more convenient to spend 10 bucks extra for the oil change versus doing it myself, and dropping 15 bucks on having them move tires around while it is jacked up?  Absolutely.

I am getting the vip 1o1 training  from SKPreformance so i am learning while i am doing my build ..:dance:

I dont do shit, I got a 100k warranty....When that runs out though I guess I gotta learn :shrug:

i wont do any of my own maintenance (cause any fool can change oil and replace parts) everything else i try and have my hands in (except audio) i hate wiring.

nothing beats getting whole bunch of mates to help you with  your build sometimes,
i do all the shit on my own and some more complicated stuff i get my mate to help me out, or even my old man, he knows his shit...aswell as have family mechanic that can help out etc.
why should i pay big bux for something i can do at home for less than half a price:)

im a grease monkey...enough said hahaha. only thing i dont do is my own alignment cause our shop doesnt have one haha

I have to do everything myself. I own a Merc. The Dealer prices are too high. I'm a member of an amazing benz forum with tons of DIY instructions.

i do basic suspension/ brake work myself. i was a full time mechanic for 5 years but got tired of it reallll quick.

Wouldn't have it any other way.............yeah who am I kidding if I could afford it I would pay somebody else to work on my cars.

It's all me, except for mechanical on the daily drivers, because I take too long, I can't have that downtime :P

When something needs doing, I try and figure it out by myself and save the bucks of taking it to a shop. There's no learning like hands-on learning!

I just wish I had more mates into that sort of thing last year and the year before! Only now do I have friends who can help me with my projects

I use to always just take my car to the mechanic cause I was really lazy and never had time. Now once I was able to have a place to work on my car and a little free time I dont think I am gonna be going to any mechanics unless theres something really serious and atleast the local mechanic is a friend so wont charge much. After breaking a caliper bracket and getting sick of my brake setup scored some Z32 30MM Rotors and Calipers basically new and ended up installing and bleeding them myself and havent looked back since. =) maintenance and bs work will be done at home only thing I dont like doing is body work seems too messy and cant take the smell dont like losing brain cells from stuff that isnt smokable lol :giggity:

damn seems like a lof of us on here do auto work .. paint/body is understandable, due to the fact we dont have a spray booth in our garage, wheel and tire mounting too, cause im sure none of us have 10k dollar tire machine and balancer in our garage

Not much free time.

i've worked on sooooo many cars before, now that i have a "luxury" car, i don;t do shit but put in gas. 

i [B]can [/B] install coilovers, but even had that done for me this time. 

after taking so many 240's apart and putting them back together, i just need a break for a while.

From paint to stereo to wheel fitment and everything else... me. Heck I don't know jack about upholstery and I ripped mine out of my car and I'll do that myself too. Kind of scary sometimes but in the end, the reward is HUGE. You learn how to do things (and many of the times HOW EASY THEY ARE!) and also helps you be a resource to your friends and fellow enthusiasts... Right Damicci? :P

i usually take my car to a shop to do most of the work.but for the simple stuff,i do it.when i had my ae86  used to do what i can on that car.but now since i have a newer car i take it to the shop because i dont trust myself.just in case.

I used to do everything from engine to body work on my old car.  This one (F50), I dont really mess with since most of the stuff I got going on is custom.  I never learned how to do electrical work and that is something I will look to improve on in the future.

yea mostly i do all the work except for bodywork (not fenders though, thats cake).

I do everything myself except for body work. I don't think I could ever trust myself with body work. I managed to poop on my rear quarter panels when I rolled/pulled them on my old LS. From now on I'm cut and shaving, and thats as far as I'd go with body work doing it myself :shrug:

I wouldn't let anyone besides Q45 master technicians work on my old Q because a normal mechanic would cause more harm than good on nice cars.

I do what I can, but I also leave certain things to the experts (my buddies):smiley-rofl:. Ie, I have friends that are Body shop guys, Infiniti master techs, and wheels/tire/ alignment guys...but I do a lot of my own stuff

I do everything that I'm capable of doing... even pump my own gas.... I take pride in doing everything myself... from mechanical stuff, to electrical, to bodyworking and painting.... to mounting and balancing my own tires... to doing my own alignments..... I'm weak in the a/c department but am constantly learning...  and there is always room for improvement/and learning more.... only thing that I can think of that I haven't done is tinting.... that's the only thing I've taken to a pro to do...
