question reguarding odometer....

okay i just bought a 94 ls400 and i think i might have, kinda been ripped off, but im not too sure yet. 

say, if i was to buy a brand new instrument cluster from the dealer because for some reason the one thats in the car now is malfunctioning, when the new cluster is plugged in, will the original mileage be reset in the new cluster? or will it start over from zero when the new one is plugged in? (you might get what im trying to get at) 

my reason for asking is after ibought the car, i was going through it and found some old reciepts of some repairs made to the car. one that was dated dec 2002 had a odo reading of 102xxx miles, then another dated aug 2004 had a odo reading of 39xxx miles. and as of right know its reading 55xxx miles... on all the reciepts the VIN's and license plate numbers all match up.... so right know i feel all sick about it but whats done is done... 

problem #2, i noticed that te outer taillight lenses, the parking lights dont work. but the inner lenses on the truck/parking lights DO work. i traced the wires back and i think it might be this control modulenext to the gas tank labels "lamp failure". has anyone had a similar problem like this? the brake lights work fine, its just the parking lights on the outer lenses (left and right) dont... all help is greatly appreciated...

The odometer reading is stored inside the dash cluster. So swapping it with another one will give you the reading from the other dash. It may also be possible to reprogram the memory chip inside the dash cluster to show whatever you wanted (often done on imported Soarers in Australia)

Cant help you about the taillights though!

Simple solution to find out the approx mileage... Do a car-fax or history report on the car. Every time you smog the car or a "change of ownership" happens the cluster mileage is recorded with the state. So on the car-fax report it will show the last "recorded mileage". So it should look something like...

Jan 1994 - 000,005 miles
Jan 1995 - 012,000 miles
Jan 1996 - 020,000 miles
Jan 1997 - 032,000 miles
Jan 1998 - 045,000 miles 

and so on... If someone switched out the cluster it would look something like...

Jan 1994 - 000,005 miles
Jan 1995 - 012,000 miles
Jan 1996 - 020,000 miles
Jan 1997 - 032,000 miles
[b]Jan 1998 - 010,000 miles[/b]

and this will throw a red flag on with any vehicle history report

these years the odometer were the roll back ones rite? or is the the digital odometer

yeah i kinda figured that. i mean, on the title, everytime it gets signed over to a new owner, the milage has the be writen down. and if things dont match up, somethings bound to go down.... so i feel safer now knowing all this. thanks again...
