New
Hey guys and gals I'm Isaiah and I currently reside in Bellevue, Washington which is right across the water from Seattle. I just picked up a 1991 LS400 about a week ago with 140k on the clock. Looks pretty mint on the inside and the engine looks up to par but the body has a bit of damage on all 4 corners. Plans are to do a budget build since I'm a student and are only working part time. I'm also a moderator over on Northwestnissans :giggity: so I don't have much free time.
My last car that I had since I was 17 (20 now) was a 1975 Datsun 280z. It was a really fun car to have, easy to work on, sounded amazing, but having a project car/DD doesn't really work. Had to sell it after I started hearing rod knock in my L28 Turbo (inline 6) after only driving it for a month and a half. My motor before that was also knocking really hard and I guess God just wanted me to get another car. Sold it to a guy in Canada for 950 after putting over 6k into the car but just decided that enough was enough. Here's the build thread-----http://www.northwestnissans.com/board/showthread.php?t=75556
Anyways I hope to learn a lot from you guys since I've heard that this forum has the sickest VIP cars around. I'll be posting a build here after after I modify the car a little bit.

Welcome. You have come to the right place.
The LS400 is great car. Before getting your project started, I recommend you read the service records and establish when/what preventative maintenance/major servicing is to be done.
To give you a heads up:
The timing belt should be changed every 60-90 000 miles and the water pump, thermostat, tensioner and idler pulleys should also be replaced. I have heard of belts lasting as long as 160 plus at a time. However, I would change it at the suggested intervals to avoid potential tribulations. If the belt were to snap, the 1UZ-FE is a non-interface engine – so no damage will occur. To replace all these items yourself will take quite some time and requires skill. This can be costly if it is done by a dealership however, if you intend on keeping the car for awhile it is worth every penny.
Ball joints tend to be a common issue with the first gen - listen for clicking or clunking sounds when turning.
The power steering solenoid filter tends to become clogged and create leaks. Sometimes the power steering pump develops a leak which then drips fluid into the alternator – you will notice the pump making a whining sound and traces of fluid within that region. Service it as soon as you can or it will lead to alternator failure.
Good fortune in your future build.
