Koi Pond and Waterfalls

I have been entertaining the idea of a koi pond and waterfall in the backyard of my home. Has anyone hear built a setup like this or do you have anything like this right now in your backyard? Pics or any forums/websites with info would be great.:biggthumpup:

a friend of mine has his koi pong set up similar to what you were thinking.

Would he let me come by to check it out :D.

PLENTY of BIG stuff there. Mostly aquariums, but some have monster ponds as well. How big are you looking to go? To get you started....1k gallons is NOT big at all..its like 7x9x4 ft....and would only be able to sustain, MAYBE 4 koi, for a few years, before you'd need to upgrade to keep them happy and growing. You don't always have to have koi fish, there are plenty of other fish reach 'full size' and don't get as big, yet still look cool.

Ah some good information on these sites. Yea if anyone has pictures of customers or friends ponds please post em up. They dont have to be just Koi. Any other type of fish as well.

Not really DG. Just take a look...but be careful. It gets expensive, and you might end up with a 50k gallon pond/aquarium.

Not really. Unless you mean 'daily attention' by feeding fish. You'd be surprised on how self sustaining ponds are, if you do your homework. 

First, you need to figure how big of a pond you want. Then you need to figure out what 'type' of pond is best for you. 

Once you get that figured out, you figure out what fish. You need to know how big they will get, so you know how many you can get, so at max size, they are comfortable. 

Then you get your filtration, always better to over filter the pond. You'll want something like 6x turnover rate. 

Then you put in your plants, for extra filtration/shade/looks. 

Put it all together, wait about month for it to cycle, then put fish in, then feed, do water tests daily in the beginning to make sure everything is adjusting properly, and then enjoy. If you can spend some time, one day a week testing and making adjustments, you are good to go. 

I'll see if I can find this pond build from Israel, it's a really nice build.

We have one in the backyard, approximately 3800 gallons.  About 25 koi's.  I've had it for about 7 years.  I use Japanese filter mat for filtration on 6 drums, 2 uv lights, skimmer, bottom drain & settling tank.

Maintenance is not too bad, I usually clean the filters about 5 times a year.  No plants, as the koi will just eat them, and for max koi visibility.

that video was freaky and funny but cool at the same time.

I don't have any pictures of my pond unfortunately (I'm not it the sates anymore), but look into a BOG that filters into the KOI pond itself. I had awesome success with it.

Basically it is a miniature "swamp," for lack of a better term, that the bottom drain pump with pump the poo poo from the bottom into the Bog and the roots from the plants taht you plant into the bog soak up and BLAM! clean water flowing back into the pond. It's natural and looks pretty.

Or you can make your own box/container filter with lava rocks, 1-3" cut up sections of small PVC piping, anything Nitrobacter (ammonia converting to nitrate micro-thingies...) can attach to and grow.

Besides a good filtration system.....you really need to look into the oxygen supply for your Pond and good water flow.
