Badging Debate

Been having this debate all day and interested in what VSC thinks. I'll use a mercedes example cause its what I know.

Example:

Someone takes a old mercedes that Brabus (or any other brand name, using them as an example) does not make a kit for, or does not make a kit in their recent style. One way or another they make a kit that looks like brabus or is brabus based.

To put a brabus B on the car would:

a) make them a poser, they didn't buy it from brabus, brabus didn't make it.

or

b) be ok, they are repping the company who inspired them and giving free advertising for them.

Thoughts?

EDIT: I'm not talking about rocking a knock off kit and pretending its the real deal, thats bunk as fuck. Think tribute badging.

almost the same as taking a M5 sticker and putting it on a 540I..OR M3 on a 330

No no, thats not what the question is. It's not badging it as something its not. It's like throwback badging? Maybe I can't explain it the right way. This comes from something I saw on the way home from work and i've been going back and forth on the whole thing. It was a Mk4 GTI with Audi style grill, brushed mirrors, A4 wheels, and audi badging on the hatch. I don't think he was trying to say it was a audi it seemed like a tribute. That make more sense?

it depends if you have anything else on the car that is of that same brand I would say

I have to agree with the rest, it's posing if its not the real deal.

If you were to buy an authentic kit that you got inspired from (off of another car), cut it up and fit it to your car then I say go ahead.  Rock it proudly.

Well, do you have any Brabus gear on the car itself? Wheels, pedals, shift knob, door pins, anything?

Is that sean paul airbrushed on the door of that accord? And yes kinda, its obvious thats not a 745 but also obvious where the  inspiration came from.

This I say is ok. For one reason. I had this issue when I had BMW wheels on my Infiniti Q45. People said, "thats an infiniti, not a bmw so put infiniti caps on it." My argument, they ARE bmw wheels. Would you take the "Work" or "SSR" cap off your wheels when you put it on your Lexus? I dont think so. They are BMW wheels so id keep the caps on the wheels.

Put it this way...if Agi put a Bently badge on his car...what would happen? People would talk trash about it.


Now if he put the president badging on his car...and kept with the president front, then that'd be a different story, because it IS a president conversion. 

Just like taking a udsm acura integra, and turning it into a jdm honda integra type R. It's ok in that aspect.

BUT if you were to take a honda civic, put a integra R front end on it, and put integra R badging on it, you'd look stupid.

like blkonblk said too, if it is the real deal and you cut it up fine. I think there is a huge distinction between OEM and aftermarket too. IE, that accord with a BMW back end does NOT deserve to wear the badge, but if that rear end was an AC snitzer kit for the BMW and he did all that work with that kit to fit I wouldn't have a problem with him rocking an AC snitzer badge...I know it is a grey area and probably splitting hairs.


Oh, and I rocked my SVT center caps on my Cobra wheels and S14.5...as stated before they were genuine SVT wheels so I left em.....The mustang guys loved it actually.

I hate it when people put M badges to a normal BMW.

For example if you put M3 badge to a 316 E30 BMW.
It could be M3 but if you know anything about Beemers you know it isn't M3. :pat:

the  bentley wheels on vw is ok because they are original bentley wheels, same as if you cut up an original kit.
 
now if you used a cnc machine and cut a wheel that looked kinda like a bentley wheel then put the bentley badge on it you'd be frontin... kinda like making a kit and badging it.

OR if you put a bentley badge, on your car, because you had the wheels.

Do what you want, just do it tastefully...I'm so sick of people saying 'it has to be this or has to be that"....check out an old Japanese issue of AFstage...

I've seen old school eg civics/fwd corollas/accords with a full complement of Hartge, Otteinger, Brabus , AMG badges, even sacred Alpina pinstripes, grills, wheels, modded aero, euro plates, and it had you thinking twice. Did Hartge and the rest make stuff for Honda/Toyota/Nissan? No, but it was in the spirit of the marque. They did it and they did right...

Just don't get caught slippin'... if you do it, you better go all out... and it just might keep the haters off your back...

nah man, for instance I debadged the "E320" but there was some nast phantom badge once I did so there were four perfect squares where each badge used to sit with flaking and peeling around the edges of each one. So what I did was go to your emblem dot com and selected the Mercedes-Benz font and pieced my own "MANDRUS" emblem to cover the old "E320" I did that cause I'm rocking Mandrus wheels and did it for the wtf factor and to be original. Needless to say I have since debadged the trunk completely, had the three holes behind the tri star filled and got the whole trunk resprayed. I just like a clean ride. The flat hood badge is next. I got hell from a lot of people saying stuff like "rock that badge w/ pride - it's a Benz" But I'm all about my ride not looking like every other of the 20 or so silver E classes I see every day. But to answer your question, nah man. As far as Brabus for instance goes...authentic Brabus wheels and body kit or exhaust - maybe cool, why not? I'm all for tail light conversions and custom body work especially when it comes out right. But stuff like that Honda w/ the 7series tail light conversion and slapping a 7series badge on it cause it'd be cute or whatever, IMO, nah man.
However, this reminds me of a guy in NY that had a w210 and took a w211 AMG front bumper, chopped it in half and pieced the bottom of the AMG one to his earlier model E and it came out real well IMO, real well. But taking it and badging it as AMG afterwards, still no.

Putting Aristo badges on a USDM GS300 is ok. Putting Celsior badges on a GS with a LS/Celsior front end is Posing. It is not a Celsior.... but I do see your point Sam.

Don't put a Silvia badge on a stock or non-SR swapped 240.

So, does this fall in the terms of badging a car as the JDM counterpart? Technically it isn't an Aristo/Cima/etc. Its close enough and based off the same car.

Should Acura kids not roll with Honda badges?

I dont agree.

Those are the same exact cars except:

-Hatchbacks are 180's
-Coupes are silvias
-S14 and avobe are all silvias
-Motor differences dont matter since it is the same car and it is styled the same way IMHO

I don't see nothign wrong with badging a car with different badges as long as it is the same car with badges from different markets like the Pontiac GTO/Holden Monaro, Honda/Acuras, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infinity... I think it comes down to same car, same global badges = ok.

Now, if you have a Q45 and get president badges =/= but if you do an entire fron end/trunk conversion i think it is ok because it basically is the same car with a different trim.

Now, this is just my point of view.

i personally am sick of seeing guys on acuazine telling me to get inspire tails or a honda grille.  i have an acura, and not for long bc i'm tired of that bs.
 
if i wanted a honda i would have purchased a honda.

This is getting off topic. To bring it back. If you wanna put a company's badge on ur car and they dont make a bodykit for ur app then cut up an authentic kit to work and ur not posing.

Yeah, I think to badge you car as a bare minimum would be kit/wheels...I badged my car MADRUS because I'm on Mandrus wheels and liked the uniqueness of it. Obviously I didn't have a Mandus kit (there is no such thing) A car JP kitted deserves a JP badge in my opinion same for WALD or just about anything else you could think of...now I have a Carlsson replica front bumper and sideskirts on my car. If I were to slap a Carlsson badge on my car that would be wack = faking the funk or just a strait out poser move.
