well i have aftermarket hid's for my hi/lo and fog lights. I have the ballasts mounted on flat surfaces in my engine bay. You want to know if they are weatherproof. well i don't have a hood on my car and i've drove it in the rain, washed it at the car wash, and left if uncovered while it rained and my hid's still work to this day.

if your wires are long enough you could always mount them up in the engine bay....

Yea the wires are normally long enough to fit in the engine bay.

I've had a ballast fail on one of my fogs due to rain from puddles I ran over

i think it may depend on the type of ballast you have.
i used to have this type
and then i switched to this type
these get wet and still work. like i said, "no hood" i drive it in the rain, park it in the rain, and take it to the car wash. I do cover it when i park it for extended periods.

Most of the kits now have wires that are at least 2-3' long, that's plenty to move it up high enough.
