Yes ShaneC's kit is a real authentic Wald kit. Knockoffs are a disgrace to our industry. A majority of the time it has poor fitment and requires more money to get it looking right. If you want to support knockoffs, just be real and don't say what it isn't.

Amen. If you 'drive' low you're going to beat the shit out of a kit. Unless you're ballin' outta control it's just too expensive to rock an authentic kit on a daily driver.
When I'm in the market, it'll be Version Select or Upgarage (used) for my whip.

My version select front bumper had holes in it and the corners by the wheel wells had worn through about 1/4" within 6000 miles of driving(4 months for me). Not going to put a $1000 bumper through that. Ever. Not for money sakes, just for respect to that nice a product.

Sorry to hear about that, shieeesty but I'm glad to hear there was some sort of resolution. My 2 cents goes like this...I was a little bummed out like I'm a poser or something for buying a Carlsson replica bumper because it wasn't "authentic" and oh no, I gotta run "authentic" parts on my car. Until I scraped it (yes I know how to drive a lowered car) and then I scrapped it again, and well, I gotta say I'm glad I didn't blow a grand for "authenticity's" sake, only $200. Maybe once I'm in the position to build a show car I might sing a different tune, but for my DD now, it's all good. Ok, I'm done, the end=)

Break it, fix it, roll it. That's why this styling isnt for the weak at heart or pocket. For those that have issues breaking kits and have to run fakes, I consider learning to drive differently. I dont think this styling should be done with knockoffs no matter how low you are.

you say that, but in all reality, you ARENT low Scotty. this is no malice intended, but how many 600.00 bumpers have you broken? i know how many i have. and while im all about no knockoffs in every other aspect, aero is one thing i am willing to compromise. and becuase of that, it lets me push the style in other places since i dont have to worry about it. Instead of breaking, fixing, painting, i can just break, throw away, install new one.
sorry to have turned this into a knockoff vs no knockoff , if anyone else wants to talk abotu it please pm me.

600 dollar bumpers, yes Ive had them. Broken 2 knockoffs (one pic'd), and ended up basically junking. Ive owned 3 legit JDM ones know though, and have seen the better fitment and quality.

Ride height (and this was before I got lower shocks in the rear.) This is 2006. Please tell me how much lower I need to get on my coilovers. I still stand by the fact that legit are better, and are not solely based in name like so many claim. I guess Ill continue to the be the fool that rocks legit stuff. Sorry if this gets too far off, Ill be glad to split this thread though.

Of course legit is better.
But when it comes down to it i'd rather see a kitted car then a non kitted car.

Edited: I took this thread off of Shanes. I think this is a healthy chat, so Id like to keep it that way. It comes about every so often, but it is fun to see other people's feelings on it.
I still stand by the fact and am proud I support the real authentic kits, and the companies who put the hardwork into designing them. I personally believe it is as bad as rocking Sportmax, Rota, and other copy cats. I dont see why we should draw an imaginary line at kits, while being hypocritical and saying "You have to have legit wheels to show the level of quality that VIP has." I guess ill keep wasting my hard-earned money on them. That's my opinion and prerogative..

and im going to stick by my guns that you weekend guys (you know who you are) are good on rtolling kits
Ive heard stories of you guys that stunt like you ride low on air....actually dont. and thats from ALOT of people telling me this. Not gonna name names, so you are safe.
But dont front like the pictures you post on here of riding dumped on air and saying you do makes people think you do.
If you roll real, and the car is your daily, there is no way you are not going to care when you crack some aero.
If you are all high and stuff who cares, you arent going to hit it on anything short of a dog.
but for those of us that actually ARE low on a daily basis...think ripping UNDERBODY parts off, then it doesnt make sense.
If i had another car, sure, i would rock real aero. I woudlnt have to drive it every single day. i could just ride it on the weekends. If i had a house that didnt haev a mountain to get into..sure id rock real aero.
but i have been there, done that with 3x the kits you guys have (for the most part) Im sick of trashing a bumper 3 weeks after i get it and havign to find another one. I can just run to yahoo, order a 400.00 kit and throw it back on.
I break sideskirts...not just bumpers. on my cedric, the first week it came out of paint i broke a sideskirt in half....on a dip in the road. and i was on air.
when you guys that are rolling authentic full kits, and not lips are doing that on a monthly basis, then talk about rolling real.
in the end of the day its all about appearance
You can see brand names on wheels, interior, whatever
you arent going to ever see the name of a kit. who cares. alot of the cars you guys oogle in vipcar have random aero on them, or aero from places you have never even heard.

I do see what you're saying. Id much rather see guys rock real ride heights than fake, but that's the choice they have with air. I personally have broke more than my fair share of stuff. Side skirts, bumpers, exhausts, scraped frame rails up, and all that crap (maybe not as much as you, but still enough). It still affects me, and Im not going to lie it really sucks. I just realize it is part of the game though. From my experience too, the real stuff has held up better to dips I have caught, rather than the cheaper stuff that splinters out at the slightest incident. That is part of the reason I still only rock legit stuff. It isnt just for namesake alone, but the fitment has been better on my authentic kits, along with the lay of the fiberglass (which at times has been shotty on the replicas I use to own). For the explicit reason of copies, I know all my new bumpers and kits will be one that have not been copied, and can not be mistaken for such.

Faking the funk would be say " it's an authentic ________ kit" when you know down right it is not.
Interesting topic.........personally from the get go I was planning on getting me a Aero off Yahoo Auctions Japan, Up Garage, Authentic or not. But it has always been about me......my ride will never see a Show even if it even did get to the point of being "show worthy".
Both sides have great points and I think everyone is entitled to their opinions, when it all comes down to it regardless of what others think as long as you are happy that is all that matters.

then why are you building cars in the first place? cars are a horrible investment, you cant just draw the line of your argument at body kits.
i see the argument people are making for both sides, and personally, i dont care if someone rocks a replica, as long as they admit its a replica. that is of course assuming they are drifting, or riding super low...no need for a fake kit on a 4x4.
Personally, however, i wouldnt rock anything fake on my car, including aero, even tho i daily low on coilovers. However, i used to collect shoes, and i had a collection worth about $15k in mostly nikes. I was really against ppl who rocked and sold fake shoes, so thats probably what led my believe to carry on over to cars.

good for you then
i can think of better things to spend on a car than 600 every month or two on bumpers
like interior, or stereo, or makign sure all the maintenance is golden
its like investing in a losing company

Also something to take into consideration. I'm going to use Wald as an example cause i've had both a full [real] Wald kit and a knockoff [boooo] Wald front lip I was modifying to fit my SEL:
Wald bumper: $1,650, made from: Fiberglass
Wald shameful knockoff: $800, made from: FRP/Plastic/ect
So the real deal is made from fiberglass and the knock offs you can twist around.
On top of that, some of the JDM kits require JDM bumpers, or just slightly don't fit the US bumper, requiring further work to fit (read as: further MONEY).
Are knock off kits "bad" yea its bad. And sticking a Wald badge on your car when you have a knockoff is also bad. But there has got to be a middle-ground here. Why not use the knockoffs as a cheap base to make your own kit. There are DIY's all over the web and you could do it in a weekend. If you trash it not big deal cause it was cheap right?
Not to mention look what the knockoffs did... they FORCED the real companies to make bigger and better products that are so awesome and inclusive (require special fog lights, mesh, stuff thats exclusive to the original company) take a look at the new garson/artisan spirits/wald stuff. It's fucking ridiculously tight. On top of that they are going from fiberglass to FRP and plastic. I would rather pay $3,000 for a plastic (like OEM) kit then $800 for the knock off. Cause %99 percent of the damage to a plastic kit I can fix with my heatgun or at worse plastic welder.
A kit isn't a pair of shoes, to most people its a big deal, and it should be. You can armchair vipreach about this and that but at the end of the day the CAR is going to speak the loudest.

Bahc i feel what your saying with the whole shoe thing, LOL.
anyways id rock a fake lip kit cause theres no way ima spend 1000+ on a wald front lip and sides, when i can get a replica for 150. Hate me i ride LOW daily and cant imagine worrying about cracking or having the lip get fvcked up. I will forsure never rock fake wheels or anything else on my car.

If you got the cash to rock the real deal and the ability to repair it on a monthly basis then go you! If you dont or somehow think it impractical to do so then do what you can. I personally got other things to focus on rather then hatin on the decisions that others make for themselves...

Legit is the way to go. Why?
1.There are only so many knockoff kits available for a certain model. If you want a certain kit, you will have to wait a while before it is available
2.They are usually not as strong as the real deal. A real kit can take a beating and survive somewhat. They use much more fiberglass. You hit something with the knockoff and it will shatter right away (usually)
3.It will prevent new stuff from coming out. Would you invest lots of time and money into building and designing something that is going to get stolen by bootlegers?
4.Exclusiveness. Because it cost a grip, you won't see many of them
This is just my take on it. There are so many other ways to go before considering a knockoff
You can section a urethane bumper to your stock urethane bumper and build a custom bumper. It wont be as cheap as a knockoff. In some cases, more then a real deal after market bumper but the point is that you can drive dumped and it will always flex back. Dont make excuses, make it happen

Part of the argument I dont understand is this: (Id be more than happy to have someone try to explain it to me honestly). Why is it not messed up to rock a fake kit, but to rock fake rims is okay? Grant mentioned namesake. Is that all this styling is about then? You are rocking a kit that looks EXACTLY like an authentic one. All it lacks is the badging. The goal of the company that makes the replica is to copy and essentially make a fake. Why is it not faking the funk to rock it? (whether you admit it is a replica or not should be neglibile)- you are visually tricking people into thinking you have a kit, that you truthfully do not.
Ill admit Ive been on the other side of this, but I cant see it anymore to make the argument to say "Im not faking it, because when someone asks me I tell them it is replica". You are visually fooling people into believing you have something you do not. Think watches- let's say you have a fake Rolex. Does it make it okay to wear that fake and act like you have the status, as long as you never openly say "I have a Rolex"? That is the argument Im hearing from many people. I would say no, because you are passing off a cheaper imitation as the real thing, and that is the ultimate goal for any replica company whether it be wheels, watches, kits, shoes, or whatever. Whenever you hear someone with a fake Rolex, what do you think? It's not good connotations for me! It brings me back to my philosophy of kits, I think when you dilute something of class down to lesser quality and craftsmanship, you dont represent what you were trying to achieve.

Truthfully speaking, replica doesnt necessarily mean poor quaility and brand name doesnt essentially ensure proper fitment. I'm not a fan of companies ripping other designs, however i'm also not a fan of depending solely on the foreign market to provide product. We buy expensive items and beat the crap out of them, nothing vip about that imo...honestly its a dumb investment, how ever if we dont beat the crap out of them it can be a specticle...

but as for the bodykits IDK im buyin real BN_SPORTS kits for my 180 ima drift it and most likely gonna destroy it to bits.. as for the Y33 project that i got lined up next im goin with a legit kit.. .
its jsut depends on the person if they want to spend that kind of money on a kit or go knock-off. True bodykits get tornd and destroyd if daily driven but thats the price to drive low. I like to ride low unless its a truck.

For me its different from wheels etc. because I don't believe there's anywhere near the craftsmanship or quality in 95% of body kits vs. wheels. I can spend $2500 on wheels and they'll last a lifetime. The same can't be said for any kit if you put 20k+ miles a year on your car like I do.
Specifically the Wald kit for my LS. There's very little if any craftsmanship to that thing. There's very little else you could do with a lip kit design. And they want $3k for it. Fuck them. They're playing us for fools with prices like that. And all the cheap chicken wire on alot of the other kits is disgraceful.
That being said I will put my own personal touch on any kit if I ever to choose to buy one so I guess it'll be a Version Schnitz.

widebody_Q;287529 wrote:Legit is the way to go.
You have no room to talk, you don't have any kits on your car. :smiley-rofl:
For you my friend, you are teh winnAr. I do believe you are the only person who's done a full custom car....
I will get around to custom bumpers myself one day...and that is because it should not be cookie cutter, knockoff or real, and no one can really replicate it, because it's all custom.
(probably the same thing you said lol)

ive owned real and fake..both have issues..but id rock both..i daily my car low and ive cracked the real kit and it'll crack just as easily as a knock off..id rock a fake JP or whatever kit..people will hate it or love it..IMO it all comes down to how much u can get a real/fake kit for..like if u could get a fake JP kit with minor work to be done for fitment for like $1200 bucks..or a real one for $4500+? u would get teh same exactly look for a lot cheaper..i say why not? authenticity is like bragging rights pretty much..i like both tho..once all fitment is worked out..it'll look the same and people will still jock ur ride..but it all depends how much i can get the kit for..money always matters

You obviously have not hit enough hard potholes. Wheels will bend, regardless of how much you pay for them. There are plenty of very nice, expensive wheels that are not built
that much better than knockoffs...not enough to warrant a price different of $3,000+ in some cases. I think that's a moot argument.

all the time. I guess you don't have any respect for me, which frankly I could care less about. I enjoy being able to comfortably daily drive my car, and lay it out if I'm next to a modded car or cruisin' the boulevard.

I have been in the scene for a while now , 3 years . and I was saving up for a K-break and was going to be the first with one. but Lost a paycheck in mortgage field and lost over 4800.00 towards the kit.
plans changed, and happen to run across a steal of a deal.
I rolled a "styled" kit for a while and it was used too, for an amazing price.and fitment with Oem bolt ups.
I also showed the car quite a bit and enjoyed it. and won trophies ;p
as I am in the scene I changed up a bit , I have changed wheels, 6th time now. and kit once. Its was easy for me to change wheels. and sell the kit I had but obviously harder for me to save up for the one thats coming in.
also I ride high, Not because I want to but because I need to gauge how to put in new pieces to raise my UAS bag, as I roll no kit I liked driving alot lower. but rubbing bag issue. and I would probally need to relearn how to drive low.
Being in the game changed my thoughts on the kit. I wanted to redo it because I like the respect factor and will love the new look alot more.
IMO If I had coils/bags Id be happier but this is my 3rd set of suspension. I don't see myself changing it. too much $$$ going air the first time.
thats my piece of pie

I drive as low as possible with air. Driving high is embarrassing. I have replica aero on my car. Everything else is legit JP. To me driving high is worse than having a fake kit. VIP style only looks good when the car is rolling slammed. It's boring to see a car parked. It's all about the style of your car, the execution. You can have the most expensive parts on your car and have it still look bad if it's not put together right.
I'm surprised how well my front bumper has held up. There's two holes on each side of my bumper from scraping but it hasn't cracked or fallen apart yet. I'm trying to have that fixed ASAP because a car that has a clean fake kit looks better than a car with a busted real kit, and way better than a car with no kit. So people who don't even have a kit on their car shouldn't be hating on anyone because they are stock.

+1.. i totally agree with u yokota..
i actually think sometimes you're a dick on this forum, but u nailed it
with people "claiming" they roll slammed when they dont.... i hate those
kinds(not just this forum, but in the car scene in general)...
as for the original topic.. ive seen knock off kits for all kinds of cars fitting
and looking well if u take it to a shop and have it installed and painted professionally..
but when u see a raggidy old civic with a super cheap bodykit which he/she
just slapped on and didn't even paint or install correctly, of course it looks
like hell! i picture that when i imagine fake kits...
i worked selling knock off parts/kits/carbon crap for a few years and was selling that
stuff for years..
i am not above rocking a fake kit, i think its that PURIST VS NON PURIST
mindset.. if you're a purist,.. you'll save up for them jdm parts,
the real deal, real kit, real rims, real exhaust, nice suspension etc..
i think if u get your car sitting good, and it looks good, what does it matter?
i fix up my car for myself, i really dont care too much what other people have to
say because theres always something to bash or rag on.. right? even those
crazy cars in japan that spent 20-30k on the buildup, maybe their wheels can
be more aggressive, maybe they could of done suede instead of leather..
maybe they coulda went with a 2tone paint job, etc..
whats your take on this:
lets say u have a s14 and its decked out with all kinds of JDM goodies.. sr swap,
kei office this, arc that, etc.. nice wheels and kit too all jdm.. but u get a carbon
fiber hood from lets say VIS... ok so they're supposed to be a good quality
state side readily available cf hood, but its literally shit quality compared to a dry carbon
which would cost 2k or something

I hit my UCAs on my strut tower daily.
So the difference in price between TSW and DPE is not justified? As an example a friend with 'Rota' Meisters was driving behind me (too closely) and we both hit the same pothole and guess what? His bent and my DH's didn't and he has a lighter car.
The $3000 difference is usually between a 17x8 (high demand) and a 20x11 (very low demand).
I personally have no care on how high people ride. I rode higher than I'd like this past year mostly because of a lack of education about my suspension options. I'll be lower this spring. =)

If ppl are concerned about what that will do to this scene, i can assure you that it will have little impact on our end(non distributors). I mean what will happen from it:
1.Competion may either cause a decrease (competition)or increase(exclusivity) in product prices.
2.We may begin to consider producing our own aero for lower prices and quicker delivery (as long as we dont rip shit).
3.Grassroots vip'ers will talk smack about you (if you care or not).
You guys feelin me?

someone nailed it, its a purist vs non purist argument.
cars are a bad investment, so saying that kits that you are going to break is a bad investment is not an excuse...VIP isnt cheap, we all know this.
personally, id rather drive stock then on fake aero.

im telling ya'll its the purist vs non purist.. i see it in other car forums too..
theres people that will rather rock crappy fitment legit wheels or stocks
than some fake wheels.. its the same thing.. if you're not above it, then by
all means, go for it.. if you're a purist to the VIP scene then i guess go get
the balla balla parts/wheels/kits..
im not knocking that at all, its badass.. but if someone else can achieve a good
looking car for a much lower price, is that so bad? i dont think so.. if you're
all so balling, go buy bodykits and wheels brand new.. that's real balling..
and don't be the 2nd or 3rd owning of these luxury platforms, be the original,
go get the ls460... of course that's like real balla status..

we r mixed over here.
i rock a real kit in the GS, i ride low, and my front is currently cracked again, and my fenders are still messed up. ive fixed the front a couple of times already, go through so many tires but i dont care. its how i wanna drive.
now the Q that miah drives has a VS kit. hes repaired it twice, and did some more mods to it this last time. so he currently rides a lil higher especially since he just had to buy 4 tires. its christmas season and he dont wanna drop $ on tires till after the new year. i hope he rides slammed again next year

Who really buys a VS kit because the design of the kit fits their plans with the car? There are atleast 10 more modern and better looking kits out there.
The arguement "its going to break anyway" would only apply to those who would be interested in the real Auto Couture kit in the first place.

I know that this topic is about Aero but what are your feelings on "JP" BBK or "JP" Suspension (not saying they are "knock off").....technically it is a different brand who makes it (Endless/Brembo/Tein) what ever Company it may be. All they are doing is putting their "JP" Brand on there and people are paying extra Benjamins. Other examples, JP Tissues, Slippers, Lighters, etc. Are they made "in house"? Or is it being made in China (no offense intended) and JP just puts their name on it to "justify" the crazy prices that they sell it at. Should it even matter? Is it really worth it just to be able to say "yeah I have JP this/that".
I am not saying that JP ain't legit because they are Established and have "Mainstreamed" a lot of VIP items and have Capitalized with their Ingenious revenue avenues. I feel JP has done a great job creating "Branding" and they have made a "Emotional Connection" with their Clientel and that is why many "justify" spending what they do. But is it really worth spending the extra money for the "JP" Brand when you can have the exact same BBK or Suspension (from legit companies) but for Hundreds less just because there is no "JP" Stamp?
Personally I don't (but that's just me...to each their own), I would rather buy direct from company who ever made the BBK and save me the extra Benjamins for the next modd. I have never really been much of a "Brand *****" before.......but then again that is just me.
Thoughts anyone?

^Not the same IMO. JP works with the bbk company (rotora) rather then just stealing their products without permission. People will buy their brakes to match their other JP items, for the name and prestigue assosiated with it and also for the look of the logo. What looks classier on a luxury vip car; a Rotora logo or the JP logo?

your point, while an interesting conversation in its own right, is completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. For instance, lets talk Weds. If i wanted to buy Endless BBK, I'm getting a legit, recognized brand. If i want to spend the extra money to buy Weds branded Endless BBK to match my Weds wheels, that my personal choice to have a full Weds build. But if i decide NOT to get the Weds BBK, im still left with a quality product. With aero, it comes down to legit brand, or non legit brand.

As many have said, I am not concerned whether it's a knock-off aero kit or not. Now, if you claim to ride low daily when you really don't, that's a totally different story. Simply put, just don't claim it is something when it really isn't. Take pride in your action/decision.
On a lighter note, pardon my French, but I don't give a fuck what any of you do to your car. I'm not here to judge anyone or their car(s)--I'm here because I share a similar passion with you. No homo.
If anything, the folks who are new to the VIP-style scene need to realize that having certain accessories on/in your car doesn't make you or your car VIP. When it comes down to the core of all this, isn't vip a lifestyle that revolves around the car? Hell, even
I don't think I can ever consider my car to be "officially" vip.
ScottyTuned;287356 wrote: For those that have issues breaking kits and have to run fakes, I consider learning to drive differently.
I don't believe a suggestion such as that would be beneficial to others since they encounter situations different from what you encounter daily.

how many JP curtains and tables and cupholders are being put on cars these days?
ive never been a fan on that aspect in the vip scene.. the bippu accessories was
always too girly to my liking.. BUT i do appreciate a car fully done up even with
curtain and stuff for the pure vip car.
same goes for a fusa.. putting a fusa and some ugly eurolines that are played
doesn't make your car VIP..

Just going to throw this out there:
VIP= High end, baller status look andfeel right?
So if your a baller cost wouldnt matter, so if you have a super exspensive luxury car, with all the vip goodies, yet your worrying about money, doesnt that make you faking the funk?
a litte off the topic, but if aero is going to be thrown in as to what makes the vip a vip as far are the status it defines, then to be vip and broke is just as fake as a knock off kit........
lol...probaly not a good first post.

eurolines are certainly played, and does not determine whether a car is VIP or not, but in many people's opinions, it is a timeless, far from ugly wheel. Just cus Ordens are super played doesnt make them any less beautifull =[

Due to the vehicle i have, knockoff isnt an option...lol So i win!
But as far as the debate goes... i can see both sides, but there is nothing like having the real thing. Its almost investing in something. but as many have stated shit will break. And me being the type of person that loves to drive alot, and drive my car as much as possible. i would break stuff. but im a good low driver, soo i havent broken too much. ihave more to say.. but im on the way out! ill save it for later! good discussion..

hmmm i agree with stopping the copy.. but at the same time..
theres a lot of people who probably wont have the kits they
have on their car ever in AUTHENTIC form.. so its like either they
get a version select now.. or they might be another year or two
before they can import one from japan.. i know a lot of people would
rather roll stock than to "cheap" up their rides...
i guess to me, if the car looks good it looks good.. he coulda of bought a
300 dollar kit and had it installed all sick.. who knows.. but
this discussion is pretty awesome.. =)

honestly, things brought up like this in the "VIP" scene is one of the many reasons or in content, why I got out of it. Always had to hear and deal with people talking about real this and fake that, Look at my wheels, my interior, blah, blah, blah... I will admit, at one point I lost my self in building the Q where all I could think about is trying to impress, buy hardcore, spend big money. In the end, I found allot more things to be important, and it took losing and neglecting other things in the process. And its like I tell ALLOT of these new comers that entered the scene and that don't know me personally or what I did. If you don't like it, you can buy it and show how it's done. I still respect the OG's to this scene and hope that the next group up and coming can build out of love for it than just tryna show off. In all else, real kit, fake kit, real wheels, fakes wheels, do what YOU want and don't let others dictate how it should be done. Cause if you happy with it, you can't be faulted for that. Much respect to everyone in the scene, it was a pleasure knowing you

Best post in this whole thread... It's unfortunate when the scene loses valuable members such as yourself. Good luck in whatever lies ahead.

Personally i think its ridiculous to leave something cuz people talk about or have different views about things. IMO just shows how concerned you actually are about what others think. I expect these differences and welcome them for the sake of growth and learning. Its more important for you to decide what you like an put your time and money there. Yeh there are guys that just wanna go for the look and buy whatever it takes, but those guys rarely like to talk about it when you ask them. Others hold on to the premise and go for the real stuff and pay their dues, but feel confident about the decisions they make. Sure there are prob others in the middle of both these extremes. Why do fakers feel the need to defend their choices? Cuz they didnt make the choice they wanted to, if they could IMO. Then you got people sayin "well, yeh its ripped but i got better stance and fitment then yours." Well, all i have to say bout that is this, theres a quick way and a right way, and i assure you the right way doesnt need to make excuses. Perhaps, i aint there yet, but when i get there we can have this conversation again. To all the newbs and aspiring, dont give up or fold for what you really want, these things can take time (and money), but its a commitment that you make to yourself. After your journey you may actually want to share the experence with others....

I don't care about names on kits because i don't really care what YOU (used as a general word) say about it. I modify cars because its a stress relief. i love doing it. i love cutting my hands up, getting dirty, smashing fingers, whatever.
If paying 400 for a kit i like, vs 2000, lets me do that even more. then i'm going to do it
we all know i dont compromise on wheels, its just how i am. but with kits, all of them look the same anyways. you either have the two round/oval foglight smooth front end, or the old school jutty front end. there hasn't been innovation in aero since wald started doing their sporty stuff.
if aero makers started doing cool stuff again, then yeah, i may save up and buy one. but the only cool stuff is copied over and over by each other, resulting in a bunch of Euroline, vienna bodykits.
what it comes down to, Aero is not a functional part of your car
you do not need it
you dont need bumpers
or fenders
or skirts
or hoods
you do however require
wheels
brakes
suspension
solid mechanical parts
thats why i stay name brand on those parts, and not on aero.
aero is disposable, other parts you trust your life in....are not
and just an fyi:
I am in the position, where i can buy real or fake for almost the same price. with upgarage, i could have gotten a kenstyle kit for 500 bucks. but i didnt like the kit so whatever. Its just a matter of convenience. The knockoff shit will be here by the end of the week. i gotta find the real stuff and wait.
and i dont wait

dom may be able to throw it out there more but from my observations:
There are SO MANY aero makers in japan. so aside from the top 10 or whatever, there are 50 others.
everyone copies everyone. im sure if wald saw some small hole in the wall (say Garage Kagotani) make something, who would know they copied it? Noone. So who is to say that all the big companies didnt pry on the little guy and use their designs as their own.
its a vicious cycle. but i see auctions ending early with Buy it nows for random aero all the time.

There is the moral dilemma of buying replica parts. They (the replica manufacturers) are taking a company's design and essentially stealing it, to profit off of another's work.
Is rocking replica aero any different than a guy rocking a fake Panerai? Sure that replica might still be high-quality, and keep just as good of time as its legitimate counterpart. Of course it is much better to bang up a watch that cost 1% of an original's pricetag. Does that still make it morally acceptable??

but what if the so called "real" aero ripped it from a mom and pop company?
how do you know they didnt?
and i can naem three real branded kits i have owned that had shit quality. why would i pay the money for crap?
because of a name?
It goe RIGHT back to the keeping up with the Jones's comment i made earlier.
If the 2,000 kits bolted right on, fiberglass wasnt wavy, blah blah blah, then sure, id say its worth it.
but when a 400.00 kit fits better than a 1200.00 wald kit, there is a problem. same with insurance. my random aero on the cedric fit 120% better than the insurance kit i had. everything was all jacked up, same with the wald kit

My WALD kit's fitment is par. That's not the issue though. The issue is a replica is a copy of an original. If the replica manufacturer designed his own kit for much cheaper, then it's not a replica. When he copies someone else's design is where the line is now drawn.

see yokota... thats a good example of how people get caught up in the
VIP brand name ordeal... cuz its a japanese brand and its in the magazine..
its VIP.. lets throw some on my car.. quality is quality and YES i do think
JP stuff is super nice.. fabulous... mode parfume and the list goes on and on..
its siick but it does come with a hefty price.. its like the JDM scene
for hondas 10 years ago.. JDM was big big big.. and it was busting out
sick if u get the legit japanese stuff.. then came the fake JDM corners..
fake jdm yellow foglights.. rota slipstreams single handed ruined the
spoon sw388's.. lol..
i think if u are a purist then u gotta save and do what u gotta do to get
a piece at a time in building your true vip car.. and if u're a n00b or a cheap
person.. get a platform... slap on some cheap wheels and some cheapness
and u can be rolling VIP... how many sets of axis, sportmax, and stern are on
clublexus members.. its a shame.. cheesing up a what was a nice car..

What about owning replica purses or glasses? Are you really going to judge a person based on
that? Are you really going to put forth the effort into that? Are we really that materialistic? Just because someone doesn't have the proper funds to own a Hermès Birkin bag doesn't mean they aren't allowed to get a replica. What about all those knock-off glasses you find in Target or Wal-Mart? Get a grip.

A kit may not cost 2K worth of fiberglass, but I sure as hell know that 1 Fabulous Profound doesnt have 1K worth of aluminum in it either, nor does a Scara/Orden/Emitz or whatever you may fancy for wheels.
If I wanted to be a baller I wouldnt own a 10K econobox. It is a passion of quality and execution for me. Ive done the sporty thing and other styles, but I keep getting drawn back to the luxury look.

vw and honda kits are so much cheaper because the scenes are so much bigger and the Car makers put so much more of those cars into production.
If your selling 200 kits at $700 to VW guys, you will make more as a manufacturer then selling 50 kits at $2700 to VIP guys.
If you think we have it bad, see what the BMW and Benz tunner pay. A set of new multipiece Lorinser wheels, Body kit, fenders and exhaust for a CLS, Eclass, SL, Sclass, or CL will cost you near $25,000
And thats with no paint, labor or tires

Guys, just so everyone knows there are some truths in the auto scene:
1. Shows are rigged, we know whos winning what brfore it even starts.
2. Just about everything is ripped from someone less known.
3. Prices for kits are extremely overinflated, and thats because we are paying for the name.
Whatever we choose to pay is our choice, because we create the real value of the product. This is more of a moral dilemma because what we do says something about us. Paying more doesnt mean we're smarter and paying less doesnt mean we're cheap. We are limited here in the states by what we are willing to do to get what we want, however if we had complete accessabilty to an arry of choices on a whim, we may have a broader sense of judgment. You cant make a simple comparison based on a one sided point of view.

i'm not going to read all this since it's all been said before.
what i am going to do is restate the reason i will always be anti-knockoff. knockoffs take away (steal) from the companies who are innovative. it's not about stuntin ("my _____ kit cost $$$ and it's sooo vip") and it's not about being sensible ("i ride sooo low that i know it's gonna break"). it's about supporting companies with original ideas. kits, wheels, shoes, and cereal... it applies across the board.
personally, riding low is a reason not to buy a kit at all.

I find this to not be entirely true. My mother has always appreciated the more glamorous stuff, but she finds the knock-off to be reasonably comparable in terms of price. That's not to say she doesn't like the gifts I buy her.
On another note, I am a proud supporter of generic prescription drugs. :pat:

I've had a replica kit before and I'm not going back there. Only the real kit for me from now on. The quality and fitment is just much better.
Besides, nobody said you have to buy a brand new real kit. There's lots of used real kits in Yahoo Auctions Japan & Upgarage. With how much we have to pay for aero kits to be shipped to us weather real or replica, might as well save and get the real deal.
Plus having the real kit forces me to drive more careful.

Probably comes from the same factory. It is nieve to think that anything is made where it says it in. Look into those laws sometime. The only country "say made in ____________ " is canada, and they only require 50%.
So the other 50% is made in china. And chinese people will sell to anyone. so the difference between your junction kit vs the knock off could be it never went to the JP warehouse. Factory - warehouse - distributor - shop - customer.
Pay an employee 10$/month, or 10$/hour you tell me which a company is going to do.

I have vip in my name because the style inspires me. I have a fake kit because the real one hasn't been in production for years. Coincidentally the company that made my replica is now going out of business if they haven't already. Does that make my knockoff dare I say it "rare and exclusive" now.lol I ride low daily as well and its gotten its fair share of a beating and for a knock off it hasn't shattered. After seeing how my kit has been beaten. I would've still gotten the authentic was it available if money isn't an issue. Truly when money isn't an issue I'll buy real all the time but right now being young and impatient I'll grab a fake kit and keep it moving. Its an old car. Having an overpriced kit wont change that. Honestly for the purist people in any scene to start talking their bullshit they better be leading the way with the newest platforms, whether it be a new luxury car in this scene or the newest motor in another scene, they better be doing some baller shit if not they can stay quiet because all they are really doing is spending money on someone else's ideas and justifying how special they should feel by how much money they've spent.
That's my take on real vs. Fake when it comes to kits. I will still drop mucho coin on some badass wheels because they make more of an impact to me then my kit plus none of the "fake" wheels look as good or are in the sizes I'd like anyway. I regret the wheels i have now because they aren't the right offset. The fact that they are "fake" doesn't really bother me especially affer banging them around and they still didn't bend.

I'm sorry would you happen to have more mainstream magazines that I should go after? The one I really wanted to get in was Sport Compact Car. They're Gone. Maybe after school I can pull off Heavy Hitters with a newer platform. Other than that unless someone starts VIP CAR USA I'm going for Super Street, DSport and whatever else is out there. For me any coverage is better than no coverage.

I can tell ya now..unless you have a high horsepower car or some other mainstream PERFORMANCE additive, your not gonna make Super Street or Dsport mags. I came from that side of the tracks to VIP and still own my Accord with thousands wrapped in it with aspirations of that. Those mag features are over rated and most of the cars they feature in the pages aren't built that high on quality or fitment. It's all in who u know wit them guys!!

Hit the nail on the head. I don't hate on people with fake shit or rotas, but when you go and apply a volk sticker on your gridz or claim you have the real deal, then you're just setting yourself up for failure.

Since I'm still pretty new to the style, I will admit that my mindset used to be 'buy the genuine stuff regardless of price'. That was the mantra that seems to be driven into all new members and for a while, I guess you could say we have no choice to follow that or be looked down upon.
However, over time, there has been a shift in attitude from quite a few longstanding members and their perception of the style caused a gradual shift in my own. I'm not gonna be a nutswinger or anything of that sort, but I think its alright to rock a knockoff, particularly if you're using it as a base for a non-platform. Why spent $2-3k on an authentic kit only to hack it up. Sounds like a waste of money just to say 'yeah I'm rockin Aimgain or Junction Produce'.
I think the big issue isn't about whether or not its authetic or not, but rather, whether or not the person is humble about themselves. Faking the funk is going to be here till the end. Regardless of the type of enthusiast you are, its there. If you are humble about what you have, I don't think too many people will have an issue.
On a side note, those claiming to be 'baller' in scene and looking down at those less fortunate (financially or craftwise) should also be humble. I've seen threads where members bash others because their stuff isn't authentic, but some who do have the genuine stuff are rolling around with rock-chips, scrapes, cracks, etc etc. If you were truly 'baller', wouldn't you want to set the trend? That would mean repainting/repairing your damaged parts daily. I don't think there are too many people who have those kinds of funds on a regular basis, yet when they clown other members, it generates mixed emotions.
I think if you want to take about 'keeping it real', you gotta set the standard yourselves, otherwise you're just like the rest of us- trying to intrigrate ourselves into the lifestyle, but still falling a bit short due to periods of progress.
That's my take.
Rock what you have, but be humble about it and yourself.

Theres a difference between a rolex and a fiberglass body kit.
One is a 5000$ plus item, that will last forever.
One is a 2000$ bodykit that will break when you hit shit hard when riding low.

To me it matters. Some kits have extremely poor fitment. If it has good fitment and is durable as well, then it doesn't matter.

i dont understand how it makes no sense?
The watch on your WRIST will never see anything that can cause extreme damage to it. So a 5,000$ purchase for a watch is fine.
Your JP kit will. 2000$ for a piece of fiberglass? It is was anything else other than fiberglass it would make sense. Urathane is good. Heck even if it was made out of what oem bumpers are it would be worthwhile.
Am i looking at a jp kit for my first kit? Yes, i always want to see how long it will last. If it breaks alot then ill go knock off. I know how to drive.
Heck i just bought a legit BN sports kit for my silvia.

this doesn't really affect my stance on knockoffs, since i have a moral objection, but there is a good message in this post.
straight off the jump, let me say that if you were anti-knockoff right up until you bought one your opinion is biased and was never based on the right reasons to begin with.
i joined around the same time and i remember not being able to open a thread without reading "pay to play". this actually appealed to me personally but that's not where i'm going with this... the attitude
has changed. people are way more open minded (or just quietly disapproving) concerning platforms, mods, brands, etc. exactly what everyone said would happen, and tried so hard to avoid,
did happen and it wasn't even 1% as bad as predicted.
japanese vip switched up so much in '08-'09 that the super-luxury image faded away. the u.s. "hellaflush" scene also played a role i think, because people from different genres came together on the common ground of fitment and stance. this fairly quickly diluted the purists into oblivion (or seclusion) and brought the acceptance of cheaper parts, among other things.
i have no issues (other than actual financing from time to time) with paying whatever price for what i want. in fact, a high price tag probably makes some things
more desirable. however, i can not expect everyone else to feel the same way. everyone is entitled to their own opinion of value.
but knockoffs parts and cheap parts are not the same, they just share the common trait of being inexpensive. knockoffs are replicas. not similar, they are literal copies of something created by someone else. the gray area appears almost immediately.
what about wheels?
what about 'em? i can tell an orden from an sl with only a 640x480 pixel picture of a car 20 yards away.
i can not tell a bbs from a bb5.
but the authentic doesn't fit my car.
good point... except this is called modifying for a reason.
but i'm going to cut it up.
is cutting a replica easier?
but the fitment on the knockoff is better.
this one really is a shame. for the price some of these parts run they should come flawless with a red bow and a stripper. but fitting is a normal procedure for body parts. in fact, a perfect fitting kit on your car will not be a perfect fit on every car (of the same chassis).
i also have to argue that it
should be better. if 99% of the work is done for you then your 1% has no reason to not be on point.
it's going to break anyway.
then what's the point?
the fact of the matter is these are all justifications. i'm not going to get into the real issue with knockoffs again, you
should have no problem seeing exactly what's wrong (hint: it has nothing to do with what you or anybody else thinks). there is a difference between buying within your means and selling out. however, if you do chose to rock reps being humble about it is definitely the way to go.
"i bought a knockoff, so now knockoffs are the s**t... but not all knockoffs, just the type of knockoff i have" will get you nowhere quick.
unfortunately replica companies only have skill in reproduction. if they had the creativity to make something new then this wouldn't be an issue. if "all authentics look the same" then it really shouldn't be that hard to make just enough changes to make it unique.
in closing, i have come to realize that sometimes you just have to roll with it, so to those rocking knockoffs:
do your thing. i still object to the companies that make them and will continue to speak out against them every time it comes up. however, if that's what you want to do then who am i to judge. i may poke fun at your knockoff parts, but just take that as the price to pay for not paying the price. roll with it.
Rock what you have, but be humble about it and yourself.
this doesn't really affect my stance on knockoffs, since i have a moral objection, but there is a good message in this post.
straight off the jump, let me say that if you were anti-knockoff right up until you bought one your opinion is biased and was never based on the right reasons to begin with.
i joined around the same time and i remember not being able to open a thread without reading "pay to play". this actually appealed to me personally but that's not where i'm going with this... the attitude has changed. people are way more open minded (or just quietly disapproving) concerning platforms, mods, brands, etc. exactly what everyone said would happen, and tried so hard to avoid, did happen and it wasn't even 1% as bad as predicted.
japanese vip switched up so much in '08-'09 that the super-luxury image faded away. the u.s. "hellaflush" scene also played a role i think, because people from different genres came together on the common ground of fitment and stance. this fairly quickly diluted the purists into oblivion (or seclusion) and brought the acceptance of cheaper parts, among other things.
i have no issues (other than actual financing from time to time) with paying whatever price for what i want. in fact, a high price tag probably makes some things more desirable. however, i can not expect everyone else to feel the same way. everyone is entitled to their own opinion of value.
but knockoffs parts and cheap parts are not the same, they just share the common trait of being inexpensive. knockoffs are replicas. not similar, they are literal copies of something created by someone else. the gray area appears almost immediately.
what about wheels?
what about 'em? i can tell an orden from an sl with only a 640x480 pixel picture of a car 20 yards away.
i can not tell a bbs from a bb5.
but the authentic doesn't fit my car.
good point... except this is called modifying for a reason.
but i'm going to cut it up.
is cutting a replica easier?
but the fitment on the knockoff is better.
Seems everyone's opinion is close to the same and I agree to a point. Not all of us here can afford the authentic kits. The problem is in those that put up a front. If you bought a fake kit, then let everyone know you are rocking a replica. Its not going to really change anyones opinion of how the car looks. Now if you say you are rocking the real shit, and people find out you had a replica kit all along then thats just bad news. Why did you feel the need to lie to people? Not only will peoples opinion of your car change, but you will also have lost everyone's respect. If you are willing to lie about having a replica kit, then who knows what else you are lying about.
basically, if you rock replica just let people know and try not to be a poser.

Think this thread is long enough?
I believe in supporting the original manufacturers over their knockoffs. However, there are some well constructed ‘knockoff’ manufactures out there. Regardless of what you go with, just don't be deceitful. Damaging your kit should be anticipated – it’s the price of being low, live with it.

What I don't get is the "I can rock a knock-off kit because I'll damage it" but then turn around and bash knock-off wheels.
Makes no sense to me.........but everyone will mod to their own tastes and budget.

Legeit kits dont matter and people complain about them not fitting correctly all the time but when the kit doesent fit how it is supposed to the body shop needs to come in and fit it. kits are never a slap on and go thing to get the best look with a kit it needs to be fitted to the car.

another thing to keep in mind is make sure the car you have is legit...i can't blame the kit if i am going to slap it on a car that was front end damage before. hell even oem parts don't fit the same afterwards.

interesting thread.. I wouldn't buy a real deal kit if i had a drifted gs300 or something. But even coming from someone who has done body work and so on for 8 years: when i see kit thats not a knock off, and doesnt fit.. that makes me more agitated cause why pay that money? when you have to do the same work to a nice replica of that??? Hell i have seen replica ones that took the flaws of the real deal and fix them. I bought gpsports g4 bumper for my s14 and it fit perfectly, so my mentality of real deal is high, but seeing how you have to mod a lot of jp kits for the doors to work.. thats crap. I understand if a bumper is a bit off cause your fenders could be off.. but doors, they are the same here to japan.
Luckly I have a 02 Q45, and there is no replica kits around state side, not even lips really. So like Agi, oem style is the best way to go!
I think real kits are awesome and great bragging rights, but not for daily grindin. I have more of a problem with knock of clothes and jewelry than anything for cars. May think thats funny, but like someone mentioned those things dont have rocks, bugs, pavement and a 4k pound car attached to it to destroy those things. Anything Real name brand that i have a problem with on cars is old muscle cars.. to me thats faking the funk more than rocking the bunk on a car that doesnt have the history as those do. But most people dont daily their 69 mach 1 mustang, I dont.

My version select kit took a little trimming around some of the tabs but fit the car better than the OEM bumpers.
Meh to this whole argument. I NEVER once referred to my kit as an Auto Couture kit, not even once did I call it an Auto Couture REPLICA kit. It was a Version Select kit. I went through 2 front bumpers in 3-1/2 months.... I will happily pay top dollar for a real kit when the car is a garage queen, but not a car I put 40k miles on a year.
Do what you do, dont front, and everyone will be fine!

When I had my Q, I was commuting from Seattle to Portland at least once a week. Usually twice. It racks the miles up. My company finally hired an employee that lives there to take care of the case we have going down there, so i am not driving that much anymore.
